Hey Zak. I experienced a ton of horrific trauma as a baby and a little girl. I look functional from the outside (have a master’s degree, have a decent job), yet I still have LOTS of healing to do, and life is difficult for me. I’m going to get a puppy in a few months, which represents a big step for me, and so I’ve been absorbing all of your videos. I find that I’m not only learning how to train a puppy; I’m learning TONS OF THINGS that are helping ME HEAL, too! I think tiny people think similar to how dogs think. ❤️☀️ Thank you!!! 🙏🏻

I honestly don't think I'd be around if not for my dogs, they have given me so much! And from my experience, they are not too dissimilar from small children in how they learn and experience the world; raising puppies, once I had the right info, made me a better parent. One thing I might suggest is to think about what your needs are and what you think you can cope with. I'm a big advocate for adopting rescues, however, after considerable experience in rescue work and dealing with my third dog's anxiety issues, I know how much stress can come with managing dogs with mental health disorders. On the other hand you may be able to empathize and helping them could help you, everyone is different. Adopting a puppy born at a shelter or foster home that has not experienced trauma doesn't guarantee good mental health either, as there are genetic factors, as there are with people. Buying a dog from a hobby breeder is pretty much the same risk. If you feel that you need a puppy with good mental health genetics, you need a breeder that prioritizes that and has good behavior knowledge to give the puppy a great start during their first 8 weeks. I absolutely love my rescue boy, who has almost definitely experienced a dog related trauma and I wouldn't change a thing! However, I know that some people end up being unable to take care of their special dog's needs as well as their own. If you need a support dog, getting a well bred puppy is the safest. Even though many rescue dogs end up becoming support dogs, it's very hard to determine whether a puppy will have issues. Best of luck with your journey ❤

Well first a Yes and a treat for you Zak to drive and train Biscuits at the same time-- talk about multi task. Secondly this session is almost exactly what I was telling a client of mine just yesterday. She has a 7 month old, intact and coming into heat lab and just come from a series of sessions with a non-positive reinforcement trainer. She was upset with the dog was not perfect on certain activities. I told her it is hard to remember this dog is a puppy and you must look for those little tiny places to reward. Thank you Zak, for saying to treat a small dog the same way you would a large dog! Obviously there are going to be some differences and some times when you'll need to step in and "protect" your smaller dog, but generally speaking, you should treat the small dog like a large dog. My little 8 pound boy is a great example. He has made friends with a large German Shepherd. I let them interact to their heart's content but draw the line at playing as the Shepherd likes to use his paws and gets a bit too rough. If I had a Wolfhound, I'd let them play as well. But not the little guy. The Shepherd is in no way shape or form aggressive, just a bit too rough for my little dude. But, yes, I encourage him to make friends with larger dogs. I have trained the same behaviors I trained the larger dogs (sit, down, come when called, heel, etc) and, yes, I expect them to react to my cues when they have learned what those cues mean. One tip I've learned from having two smaller dogs now. No matter how tiny the treats I give, they get full pretty quickly. They have tiny little tummies, so I'm finding I have to "break up" training sessions so they don't get full and food loses its reinforcing value.

We made the switch from large breeds to small breed. We had Irish Wolfhounds and Great Danes, and as we got older, it got more difficult to provide support to them (for example, if they weren't ambulatory). The little ones can be quite different, but I now love my little dogs.

You should do a video about training a puppy in a multiple dog household. I have 3 dogs. 2 mini schnauzers that are 4 and 2 years old and new Pyrenees puppy whose only 10 weeks and training him as well as continue working with the other two is quite challenging and any tip is helpful

I have a Maltipoo! She was a birthday present from my family (my husband and I had lost our two older dogs several months earlier). I never thought I'd own a "designer" breed and that I'd go the breeder route, but I simply couldn't say "no" (not only would it be rude, but I took one look and was head over heels in love with her) and she's now a huge part of our family and we love her to death. She's so sweet. Someone once said of our Maltipoo, "if a cupcake came to life and turned into a dog, it would be Cian" (Cian is our Maltipoo).

I got my golden retriver puppy one week ago (he is now 9 weeks old). He doesn't seem food-driven at all and barely respond to treats. My dog loves playing way more than treats, though now he will work for treats as well. But if you find your puppy is more toy motivated, use that as your reward! Find whatever your dog finds rewarding, because they get to determine what's reinforcing to them!

I got a shepherd 4 days ago at the pound to train for my disability(wheel chair) she's 4 months old. She's fairly calm.and when I say fairly calm she still has small issues with my three kitties that are out side. They don't run from dusty any more, but training comes to a complete stop ok we stop and let her stair at them. My other issue is my neighbor that lives across the street. He makes a point to watch for me in my front yard then he'll bring out these great big pits puts them on heavy chains turn towards me call his dogs trying to get mine to go to him when his go to him he pushes them away. Continued to call for my puppy. What can I do? By the way you and bred are my go to on training my puppy thank you!!!

Hi Zak-our puppy is good in the crate, but we are trying to get him comfortable in his pen. We fill it with his favorite toys and he likes it throughout the day when the door is open. As soon as we close the door, he whines (I am less than 5 feet away.) I find that if I reward a moment of silence, he then starts to whine again, and if we just ignore him and sit nearby he eventually calms. Am I causing a problem? Zak, I have a Bernese Mountain Dog of 10 months old now that is generally very well behaved. She knows she can't do specific stuff (like going on the couch, table surfing, and a few more stuff). The problem I'd like to ask is that she behaves only when we are around. When she's alone, she goes crazy and does everything she isn't allowed to do and we only see it later because we have set a camera to monitor her. How can we address this behavior of doing stuff when she's alone since we didn't catch her in the act? For instance, how to make her NOT go table surfing when we are not around, if when we are around, she doesn't do it?

I have a 4 month old Yorkie, and I want to train him to do all of these things. However, I have severe arthritis in my back so I can’t bend over easily to hand out treats or get down to his level onto the floor with causing myself pain. Any suggestions on how I can adapt things to train him? Also, no matter what I do, I can’t get him to stop biting - he’s constantly biting my hands, clothing, jewelry, feet. Nothing I’ve done works. I’d say get the dog comfortable in the crate first before the crate goes in the car by throwing the treat in the crate and the depending on the size of the dog put her in the car beside the crate and start throwing treats in the crate and wait for it to go in and you could also give it a lick mat in the crate before starting the car and then give one in the car without moving and slowly increase the stressing variables (like closing the door of the car, move away from the crate)

Hi I love your channel. I just brought home my 8 week old Labradoodle and I'm trying to do crate training. I haven't found a video that discusses how to keep them in the crate at bedtime while trying to make the crate enjoyable. We'll be on night 3 tonight and so far she's been crying the past two nights. I understand separation anxiety but I don't want her to hate her crate. She's getting more used to it today during naps but is there a way to make bedtime not so traumatizing being in the crate? I’m having a lot of success with the “leave it” command for his puppy nipping at my hands when he gets excited or wants to play. Especially when we’re trying to train a game of fetch,particularly to get him not to try to snatch the toy. And “bring it” and “drop it” when he does successfully bring it back. But he’s had NO prior training before he got to me at about 4-1/2 months. We’ve had him now 71 days and he’s just shy of 7 months old and training is going really well, fantastically actually. However, I’m contending with hormones that have really ramped up, but he’s still trying his best to comply. I’m being consistent & firm but as patient as humanly possible 🤣 He’s being neutered in 4 days! So I have hope things will mellow in a couple months, after the hormones settle and the adolescent stage ends. He’s really very receptive to all the training so much that some is already becoming second nature, I’m so proud of him! I can see what a great adult dog he will someday be ♥️ But I also noticed he bites me when he wants me to cuddle him with my arms, almost like he’s using his mouth to communicate. And the more I look into the breed I strongly suspect is the majority of his mix, Miniature Pinscher, that’s typical Min Pin mouthing behavior. So we are working on it!

I'm glad you're getting him neutered! That will help with the hormones. When faced with biting and mouthing, I like to use a two-pronged approach. First, make sure he's got plenty of appropriate toys he can chew on that he likes. A variety is good--some soft, plush toys, some firmer toys, some he can really chew hard on. It's also a good idea to "trade out" toys every week or two so that he doesn't get tired of the "same old same old". After a toy has been put up for a week or two, it's like "Oh, boy! There you are. I was wondering where you were. I want to play with you now that I've found you again.". Second, when he bites on you, first, provide him with something appropriate to chew on. If her persists in biting on you, take away all interaction with him. If he's in your lap, put him the ground, get up if you're sitting down and walk away from him. If he grabs your pants and persists, hold very still until he says "she is soooo boring, this isn't any fun". If you need to, go into another room and shut a door in his face. Stay away maybe 10 to 15 seconds and then start interacting again. If he bites on you, same thing. Provide him with an appropriate toy, if he chooses to chew on you. ALL interaction stops. Don't look at him, don't touch him, don't talk to him. Just get up and leave. Rule is: You chew on me, I don't play with or pet you. You give him no attention. And when you play, try a flirt pole. They're wonderful. Dogs love them, they can get out a lot of energy, and the dog's mouth isn't anywhere near your body so they're chomping on the cloth on the end of the flirt pole, not you your clothes or your skin. And, yes, you can use flirt poles with small dogs. My little 8 pounder loves to play with the flirt pole (and so does my 12 pound girl).

It is really very much appreciated!! This guy is just definitely a mouthy communicator, as Min Pins are known to be. This is the 4th dog we’ve had and the first that has really persisted in this behavior. I think is a combination of the breed tendencies and the fact he’s had no prior training. Poor thing was making his way in the world alone on the street, so he’s a bit wild from that rough start. Although it’s still very early, we’ve not had him a whole three months yet. So still very much a work in progress ♥️ However, having had no prior training, I’m really amazed at his retention for information at this point, only 71 days in. Sit is already automatic on command, after the come command and whenever I stop on a walk! Loose leash training was an absolute breeze! Kiss and Paw are both so perfect that he tries to preemptively give me those to earn himself extra treats 🤣 Which I won’t reward him for unless I ask for it. Rewarding him for doing things I didn’t ask him to would only defeat the purpose of reward based positive reinforcement training. But he’s just trying to outsmart me, which Min Pins are also known to do 🤣 Stay is proving to be a bit more difficult, the most difficult by far. But come is almost perfect, however people and critters in the woods out in our backyard are proving to be too much of a distraction still. So we’re working on that especially since it’s a safety concern. And we’re working on up, down, off, bed, leave it, drop it and spin. He’s really doing so great, far better than I thought he’d be by now. We practice anywhere between 3 - 5 tiems a day in mini training sessions and man is he good! The one thing we’ve never tried before is the leave it command for not nipping at me, so I couldn’t believe it when it worked 🤣 It’s making teaching him to play fetch and let me take things from him just so much easier. I know that neutering and the passage of time for maturity to work it’s magic will help. It’s still not fun dealing with these sharp puppy teeth 😩😂 The only other issue I’m having is his need to be near me always. Having only had more independent large breeds, this part is very new to me. Trying to get him to nap without touching me or having to put him in his crate to nap on his own is difficult. We did wear him out this morning and after a 2-1/2 mile walk he sure did get tired enough hat he passed out curled up on a blanket on the couch. The cutest sight I ever did see 🥰 I use the crate as little as possible, he really only uses the crate now at bedtime and naps throughout the day if he won’t settle himself outside of it during the day. When we first brought him home I let him sleep on me too much, but I couldn’t resist the cuteness overload, but now I know that was a mistake…

@@Erin_29 Not true for small breeds. I did my research before we made this decision. I read all of the conclusions of those medical studies that found elevated rates of cancer and joint/ligament problems in young neuter/spay. That all was found in large breeds, but no discernible differences in small breeds.

I really admire how you don’t use negative emotions towards the dogs! I try to not do that as well but it can get hard sometimes. I got a few questions though, How do you get your dog excited for training? Because sometimes in the park I see some dogs and they are SO happy and excited and wanting to perform well and with my dog that isn’t the case, so I was really curious on how to. 2nd question: how do you teach your dog to follow you, because I learnt my dog how to follow with help of a professional trainer, now she’s completely out of it and I don’t want to do it with negative emotions because then she goes into the: I can’t hear anything and I’m sure as hell not gonna listen to you.

I think part of getting the dogs excited is knowing the dog and the "value" of the reinforcer you're using. My two little dogs are completely different. My one little guy just naturally loves training and loves to do "new" things in training. My other little girl, however, doesn't "naturally" love it. I have to "jazz her up" by using an excited voice, making it a real game, playing through the training, and giving her lots and lots of encouragement ("Oh, what a smart girl you are! You're so smart you amaze me! Oh what a wonderful girl, etc"). That helps with her a lot. It would just make my other dog way too excited. Second is the value of the reinforcer. My little boy loves carrots. I chop up baby carrots and he'll do training and work for baby carrots around the house. Out in public? Forget it. Other things are much more valuable than carrots. So I have to use higher value treats when there are more distractions. So find a reinforcer (be it food, a toy, or even playing a short game of tug of war) that your dog really loves and use that to reward the behavior you want. And yes, it's easy to "fall back" into the mode of "correcting" the dog. When I first started training (many more years ago than I care to admit), that was the only way it was--it's what you did. Luckily, along came Karen Pryor and things changed for the better. But it is easy to slip back into the "correction" mode. Keep practicing and think of likely scenarios you'll run into and plan in advance how you're going to react to that in a positive manner, how you'll change YOUR behavior in scenarios where you've used punishment in the past.

I have a 5 month old puppy that gets excited by walks and loves going on walks but he hates having his harness and lead put on and starts biting us pretty hard… I tried for weeks before we would even walk him to introduce him to the harness and collars but he seems to hate us putting it on, once we do manage to put it on him he is very calm and just excited to go outside but I don’t know how else to stop him from losing his mind! Then on a walk he seems to be either too excited or just over stimulated but he will not ever take treats and bite his lead repeatedly… I’m really struggling 😂

Don't be afraid to go back to the beginning with training. It says a lot that once he is on his walk that he is fine, it's the process if putting the harness on that he hates. Oddly enough, my adult dog decided all of a sudden that she wasn't keen on getting her harness on and jumper (during winter). She never had the gradual introduction to the harness as a puppy, because then I didn't have the knowledge, but she always tolerated the process. Then all of a sudden she started running away or fidgeting. She's a small dog and I was still able to get the harness on her, but I realized the advantage of getting her cooperation, making the process more pleasant, so I started from the beginning. In your situation you might want to consider getting a new harness (for a new association) and starting again. Think about the comfort factor and try to avoid a harness where they need to put their head through a hole just to make it easier. Maybe do some training with wrapping a bandage around him, slowly, with rewards, to get him used to something being put around him. If you have fenced a yard at home, put off the walks for a bit while you work on the training and give him excercise at home. If you can possibly afford it, I do recommend getting the help of a qualified trainer who can help you problem solve your individual situation.

So probably not the place to ask but I have a five month old boxer mix not sure with what but he started attention barking. Every where I read said ignore it and when he stops reward him. So I did so but now he barks at me. Stops. Gets treats. Barks again. Stops. Rinse repeat. If I don't give him a treat he will bark and jump on me. So I walk away and he follows biting at me. I am at a loss.

My dad's coworker moved to a flat with her dog. She wants to give dog to azil because neighbours complain about barking. The dog is also very not calm. She used to be in a big cage but she was free to ofc. Well now the dog (she) was put in her cage as it was her safe place and old flat and she broke it in 2 days. Hi Zak, I love your videos . They are awesome and very helpful, however, I need help with our 5 month old German Shepherd. The issue we have with her is, she is terrified of other dogs and she won’t stop barking at them from far away! We had her in puppy classes but she would hide under the chair all the time. Yeah… my puppy is that one who reacts in the dog class. I always feel very embarrassed. But I love her more than anything and spending time with her made me so much more patient and happy that I’m just trying to ignore the bad comments. I’m doing that I’m realizing that most people have actually no clue about dog reactivity.

@@Erin_29 it's not a matter of never correcting. It's a matter of extinguishing specific behaviors especially ones resistant to correcting or punishment. People have studied it and it works. I'd suggest you goole or some websites, but it seems like your mind it pretty made up on the subject.
