so actually the costa concordia was even more crazy than what matt was saying. the captain of the ship went off the planned course and decided to drive by an island that his girlfriend was on to impress her. the water was shallow and the bottom of the ocean there is covered in rocks. they struck a rock which left a gash in the boat and the boat started to fill with water. the captain was alerted of the flooding and didn’t do anything for an hour when he finally decided to contact italian port officials. only after he alerted them did the order come through to evacuate the ship. the ship had already tilted significantly at this point so launching lifeboats was very difficult. people were being told nothing was wrong and to go to their cabins. meanwhile others figured out what was going on and jumped off the boat to swim to shore. A captain of the italian coast guard called the captain of the costa concordia and demanded he return to the ship and assist with the evacuation. the captain of the costa concordia claimed he “fell into a lifeboat” and it was later found out he never returned to the ship. in italy it is illegal for the captain of a ship to abandon it while people are still onboard. this is also a common maritime practice/unspoken rule that the captain “goes down with the ship”. the captain doesn’t actually go down with the ship but it means the captain should be the last one on the ship. the italian coast guard captain said in his phone call to the ship captain that he would make sure he paid for this. 32 people ended up losing their lives in this tragedy and the ship captain was sentenced to 16 years in prison for manslaughter. it’s very disturbing to think the captain did not immediately react to the news of the flooding and that crew members were telling people nothing was wrong and to go to their rooms. this is definitely an anomaly when it comes to the safety of cruises but still it is such a tragedy and this should never happen again.

I live in Greece and it's very interesting to hear your thoughts about Mykonos. Greece has many islands. I think that Mykonos is a very beautiful island but very very touristy too. Also it has become very expensive over the last decades. That's why many greeks (my self included) haven't visited Mykonos yet. I believe that Mykonos is not a perfect example to the greek islands due to the mass tourism. You could search photos of other islands in Greece like Amorgos (or generally a small island that's part of the Cyclades) and you can see that most of the islands promote alternative tourism (not many expensive restaurants and hotels and for sure not high end fashion stores) but they are equally beautiful to Mykonos. *Cyclades is an island group in the Aegean Sea in which Mykonos is part of. The Cycladic islands are the same style: no flora and white houses and buildings. I usually don't comment but I wanted to share my perspective to Mykonos as greek person. I am commenting for informative purposes because I often think that many people have a very distorted picture about the greek islands because all they know about is Mykonos and Santorini (two very beautiful but also very touristy islands that they aren't addressed to the middle class greek citizen).
