Do you know those films about martial arts where the teacher is so focused yet so relaxed that they can take down several enemies at once? This mental state in which you are completely focused on the task you are performing is called Zanshin - 残心 in Japan.
If we were to translate it literally, Zanshin means something along the lines of “a mind without the rubbish”. 残 means “whatever that remains”... and 心 shin is “mind” - meaning, a mind absolutely focused on the task, without any other thoughts distracting our attention.
But besides the literal translation, Zanshin has a deeper meaning. You can see Zanshin as a way of living your life with intention, acting with a purpose, instead of being carried away like a victim of circumstance and other people’s desires.

(A quick google gave me the following, to re-iterate.) To deepen his understanding of Japanese culture, Herrigel began training in Kyudo, the Japanese martial art of archery. He was taught by a legendary archer named Awa Kenzo. Kenzo was convinced that beginners should master the fundamentals of archery before attempting to shoot at a real target, and he took this method to the extreme. For the first four years of his training, Herrigel was only allowed to shoot at a roll of straw just seven feet away. When Herrigel complained of the incredibly slow pace, his teacher replied “The way to the goal is not to be measured! Of what importance are weeks, months, years?”... ... After night had fallen, the two men returned to the courtyard where the practice hall was located. Kenzo walked to his usual shooting location, now with the target hidden in the dark. The archery master proceeded through his normal routine, settled into his firing stance, drew the bow string tight, and released the first arrow into the darkness. Recalling the event later, Herrigel wrote, “I knew from the sound that it had hit the target.” Immediately, Kenzo drew a second arrow and again fired into the night. Herrigel jumped up and ran across the courtyard to inspect the target. In his book, Zen in the Art of Archery, he wrote, “When I switched on the light over the target stand, I discovered to my amazement that the first arrow was lodged full in the middle of the black, while the second arrow had splintered the butt of the first and ploughed through the shaft before embedding itself beside it.” *Kenzo had hit a double bullseye without being able to see the target.* Great archery masters often teach that “everything is aiming.” Where you place your feet, how you hold the bow, the way you breathe during the release of the arrow-it all determines the end result. In the case of Awa Kenzo, the master archer was so mindful of the process that led to an accurate shot that he was able to replicate the exact series of internal movements even without seeing the external target. This complete awareness of the body and mind in relation to the goal is known as zanshin.

In the spirit of what is being offered here, would it be best to Google Herrigel's experience or to actually read the book...

I was taught this by a hockey coach, and it worked well once I got the hang of it. I could focus on playing goal relaxed and confident, turning off everything outside of the arena.

that was good , never thought I would finish the video. The example of focusing on the process rather than the goal when it comes to heath care really put "it's about the journey not the destination" into a prospective. Thanks

i have felt this before, when trying to defend a friend in a school brawl time slowed my awareness expanded and i was 100% in the moment. i later learned how to trigger it when i was playing games like ddr, when i was focused on a large combo i would start to control my breathing, and then the state of mind would return as everything slowed down and fully be in the moment, in the action.

Initialy I was interested of this video, but this guy is talking about obvious things without any clue or method in practice...he is keeping in secret the how to do Zenshin... long talk about anything... introduction to introduction repeated all over again... You have to visit his website to know something more, ok I singned up and video of focus is so trivial without any technique.... I have lost 30 minutes form my life with feeling of being manipulated... Other Japanese youtuber Taro Iwamoto shares Feldenkreis method and exercises without any limits, you can use them and they are working. He is not dosing his knowledge, his puropose is to help people.... here is something opposite... Arata is dosing the knowledge and makes long talks without any clue, It seems he has nothing to share in reality.
