One of the nation's finest intellectuals

The key insight I gained from this interview is the necessity for the government to grant independence to the Reserve Bank. Economic indicators present a grim outlook, underscoring the urgent need for substantial investment in hospitals and schools. To facilitate economic recovery, it is imperative to liberalize the exchange rate and rebuild trust in the Zimbabwean currency and the banking system. Rampant corruption is causing foreign currency to swiftly exit the country, highlighting the need for initiatives like a diaspora bond to encourage investment from Zimbabweans abroad. Ultimately, advancing the nation requires collaborative efforts, transcending political divides.

The economic problems in Zimbabwe are not due to a lack of knowledgeable economists; as an economist myself, I am confident that we have the expertise to transform the economy within half a decade. The real issue lies in political power, which overrides everything and undermines the contributions of economists. Despite our knowledge and capabilities, we lack the power to influence politicians, who often view us merely as placeholders or post bearers without any real authority. Consequently, the potential for economic improvement is stifled by political dynamics that disregard expert advice.
