Your view, Zara, precisely aligns with mine. Even if she did repent and was changed or saved, it doesn’t change the fact that she brutally murdered two people or the punishment which was chosen by our justice system. If we went around changing the sentencing given to criminals in court for them later being sorry and changing, what’s the point of it at all? It’s a slippery slope. I will note that I don’t agree with the death penalty except in very specific circumstances, but that was the sentence given.

Agreed. I’m going on 8yrs sober myself and any of the shitty things I did to get my drugs wasn’t the fault of the drugs. It was MY fault. That’s a huge part of sobriety, recognizing the hurt, pain, debt, chaos etc that you caused while in active addiction. And also, congrats on 1yr sober. That’s fckn A-MAZING!!! Keep your head up & push through each day. You’ll have really hard days sometimes but you got this!! You can conquer anything!! And don’t ever be afraid to reach out for help if you ever need it. Doesn’t make you weak it actually makes you stronger. Sobriety is something that you will be working on for forever. Opiates have been a life long struggle but I've done almost every drug and never once have I done anything more than get into a couple fist fights. There's no excuse unless you are completely out of your mind .... schizophrenia, pure psychosis where reality has took a huge left, or something....is it a legitimate reason. Her religion allowed her to repent for the crime she committed so that she may go to heaven, and not be banished to hell. It does not undo the murder that she so gruesomely committed. People use religion way to often as an excuse for their actions, or as a pass after the fact.
@kristys.crawford3066 Жыл бұрын
I’ve known a lot of people that went to prison. Mostly my mother’s friends. I can’t count how many of them were “converted” or “saved”. Most of them went right back to their life of crime after their release from prison. So I’m very skeptical when a prisoner claims to be “born again”. As the saying goes, a leopard can’t change their spots.

Aside from the fact that it’s helpful to their case, which in my opinion it should NOT be, religion can be kind of like a drug to people. Maybe? A thought…

They weren’t given a pass they both died incarcerated. But, I believe she truly was saved and accepted Jesus Christ while in prison. It doesn’t excuse her actions of course, but she paid for her crime with her life and she knew she was going to be executed and accepted what she did. What kind of mercy was she asking for? That being on drugs excused her actions? I have read about killers who claimed they were on drugs but were still convicted. Was she trying to get not guilty by reason of insanity because that’s all I can think of that she was trying to do. Being on drugs doesn’t excuse her actions. The others were also on drugs. If she got her death sentence taken away than theirs should to for that reason

I agree and she knew she was going to die and was at peace with it. I truly believe she was saved and I’m glad because anyone that asks Jesus with penance will be given it. While she did commit the crime there’s also so much evil and outside forces that most people can’t fathom. I mean there has always been a satanic cult influence in this country and the world, but it’s being taken as joke and a lot of young people don’t understand what they’re dealing with. It’s just sad and unfortunate.

Becoming a Christian means that God will forgive her, but she still has to abide by man's laws and the court's judgement. As a Christian on death row, the best thing she can do is to witness to others and also have peace in knowing that she will spend eternity in heaven. Having said all that, I do believe there are criminals who use Christianity as a ploy to get reduced sentences, early release for good behavior, etc. For her sake, I hope she truly was born again.

But it was a woman who had stolen an unborn baby (and killed the mother) and I guess they were debating the death penalty for her…. I was thinking like, where is the debate? That’s heinous. It’s the worst of the worst. If you support the death penalty for men, it should be the same for women.

33:09 I don't think if someone has or has not found "religion" it should have any bearing on their sentences. I can sympathize with her starting using drugs at such a young age- but she was not a child when she commited this crime. And you are very right, as a recovering addict myself, and with a cousin around my age who has struggled with addiction as well. She always gets clean and on the right track when shes been incarcerated in the past- its a much different level of strength and determination to be able to get and stay clean on your own accord. Also, if a murderer chooses religion, good for them, i hope they get a better after life, but it still doesn't change their actions here so... Tough luck i guess

Personally I don't believe in the death penalty, an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind and it doesn't make any sense to kill people to show that killing people is wrong. I do believe that Karla's transformation was real and I really wonder if she'd been exposed to religion at a young age if her life would have perhaps taken a different path. Yes the crime she participated in was deplorable but I still think she had something to contribute to humanity even if it would have been from behind bars.

People find god in different stages of their life. But killing someone and converting to religion stating ‘if I am saved, I would devote my whole life’ from my view, she was only trying to avoid death penalty. If she had found god, believed in Jesus, she would have rather much accepted her death sentence believing she should be punished for her crimes. Btw love your videos Zara!! I think her transformation is exactly what the criminal justice system should be aiming for. Not the religious conversion but the rehabilitation. I personally don’t care if someone gets to rehabilitation through religion or other means. And while I understand that the victims and families want punishment, I don’t think that’s productive. That’s why we don’t allow victims to sit on the jury or determine sentencing. The science is pretty definitive that rehabilitative solutions for dealing with those who commit crime work and punitive systems don’t. In fact, punitive systems lead to an escalation in criminal activity. And it’s thoroughly unsurprising that George W Bush, the war criminal, opted for state sanctioned murder even in a case where the inmate was rehabilitated despite all the odds (and I mean all the odds because incarceration carceral system in the US is essentially anti-rehabilitative)
@tigerkitten8352 Жыл бұрын
It tears me cuz she was under 25 when she did these things and her brain wasn't even fully developed. And she was stunted due to drugs. I am opposed to capital punishment cuz it doesn't do anything but waste money. I don't think either should have gotten the death penalty. They should have gotten life in prison. I don't think religion should be brought into the justice system, especially bc Christianity will be highly favored in America and that has been nothing but trouble as it is. But if someone finds religion in prison, cool. It doesn't mean you should get out any sooner. Religion shouldn't be the reason someone chooses to be a good person.

You know, I guess it’s nice she was a born again Christian. Nice that she was a good person when she was sober. I guess it really only depends on your views of her childhood and the fact that she became directionless and hopelessly lost within severe drug addiction at such a young age. Which is sad but it doesn’t absolve her of her crimes. What she did was horrific. Her life was taken because she took 2 lives herself. And… idk at least she felt positive that she was going to see god. 🤷🏼♀️

The death penalty in the US is so broken and messed up. Yes, men are executed more than women and that's not right but regardless the whole system is broken. Why is it that one person commits a crime and is sentenced to death while another person does the same thing and gets life? If there isn't a set of rules across the board for everyone then capital punishment should be done away with. Personally, I don't think anyone should ever be executed especially mentally ill people like Aileen Wournos. She was so sick by the time she was put to death but she was made an example of by men that were pissed she had killed men. In the state I live in mentally ill people are put to death with a frightening regularity. Also, a person as young as Carla was when she started using drugs has no idea who she actually is. Her developing brain hasn't been allowed to develop normally and keeping her alive would have been good to learn from. There's room for a lot of learning about people that tend towards violence. Why and how they end up like they are. The death penalty isn't an answer to ending violence but learning about people and why they do what they do is an answer. Just like all the gun violence happening now could be answered by learning why people act like they do. Just blame it on mental illness but don't try to learn about mental illness is pointless.
