The spike on the pickelhaube is the result of the evolution of helmet design. During warfare when people mostly used handheld arms, pointed helmets were meant to deflect blows to the top of the head. Even a sword can't cut through your helmet, most people probably wouldn't want to take the impact. As hand-to-hand fighting became less common, the point shrunk down to basically being just a spike on top. I said "less common", dickbag, not "uncommon", which is why the pickel remained in place until it was clear that it was unnecessary.
