New Zealands striking landscape has been shaped by volcanic activity dating back over 500 million years. From the huge eruptions that created many of our most iconic landscape features such as Lake Taupo, Rangitoto Island and Mt Ruapehu, the presence of volcanic forces can be seen far and wide across the country. The Zealandia video plays in the Volcanoes gallery at Auckland Museum (see www.aucklandmuseum.com/volcanoes), open daily from 10am-5pm.

So in a nutshell. You're telling me that I am quite literally living on a volcano? Wow.

A sign on the side of the basin reserve in Wellington in the 90’s showed a seismic needle & huge letters saying “ARE YOU READY FOR THE BIG ONE?” Terrifying

That's amazing it can push an continent out of the sea in a year or so because it wasn't there two years ago an nobody heard of it ,are these places actually there ,an not looking at Google maps if you go there will it be there,also some how the rock of Gibraltar is not there anymore ,it's now a part of Spain doesn't look anything like it use to ,an the iceing on the cake is ,if you drive into now not onto Gibraltar you have to stop at a barrier because you have to cross a runway yes a runway when the plane lands the barrier lifts up and the traffic drives accross how fucked up is that ,am I dreaming .

This makes so much sense when people say new zealand broke of gondwana not technically, new zealand was a land mass popped out yhecwater caused from layer on layer of volcanes erupting , it always gets me did new zealand break off gondwana or was it created after it was all broken . I like to think new zealand wasn't part of it but it's part of zealandi which supposedly was part of gondwana .

Does this mean that IF the whole continent Zealandia rose from the bottom, as more shoreline was exposed in the Kaikoura 2016 earthquake (not a nice jolt living in Wellington!), that NZ itself could become Zealandia's capital? I say this both slightly tongue-in-cheek & seriously...heavens what a proud day that would be although there would be the issue of New Caledonia & Norfolk Island to contend with? Despite these possible international hurdles the concept in it's entirety would be "amazing" to say/think nonetheless. How many more yrs of evolution would such a thing take? Or would the process quicken with much more "nastier" earthquakes as evidenced by the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake? Both scenarios seem quite plausible on the surface however, the question still remains where exactly would this lead NZ - as/with an expanded waistline (shoreline) or simply becoming the capital? Maui obviously didn't finish his fishing expedition!

Mate if those plates hit each other like that agin we wouldn't survive the quakes from it. Think chch quake times 100. Also - it'd set off a chain reaction of all our volcano's. Including Taupo: which is a supervolcano and could easily destroy half the globe :/

@sammuelle77
@sammuelle77 7 жыл бұрын
@Codes Te Moananui No, im referring to documented geological studies and evidence of Rangitotos eruptions. @Liberty Prime Rangitoto is not specifically mentioned but at 2:18-2:29 you can clearly see Rangitoto Island and a simulation of it erupting. At 2:26 a big circular smoke cloud emanates from the island.

Love how scientists state this stuff as fact, it's theory, not fact, unless one of them was there to witness it, how could they know exactly when, how and why?

FatCow, first off horrible name. Now that is out of the way. 1) there are a bunch of islands there 2) they are volcanic as they are made of lava and ash 3) there are more islands growing now 4) they measure and note which lava or ash covers which 5) Chemical differences in the ash and lava 6) known rates of decomposition of the ash and lava 7) the word theory used in a scientific paper or announcement means it’s gone through testing and has been found to be the best explanation 8) you young earth creationists really need to take real science class
