The ref couldn't offically rule the goal offside until they came back so he had to go through the motions of doing a VAR check. In watching the highlights, there seemed to be little surprise from either set of players when the ref came back from the monitor, almost as if they had been warned that call was oging to be made when the match resumed.

All teams got warned that VAR would be counting stoppage time, so as to encourage players to avoid faking injuries and stuff. Knowing this, Moroccan players decided to start playing the clock when they were up in the score, which is completely fine, everyone does it, and even if no one likes it, it's just part of the game. But the game was also stopped about 7 times due to pitch invasions, one time from Argentina supporters, six times from Moroccan supporters (i did not watch the second half, it's what i've been told). So security was broken at least seven times during the game, the last one of them with the intention to injure some of the players. We've seen huge injury time additions in the last WC as well. So a 15 min injury time shouldn't be considered outrageous if we count all the shenanigans that happened during the game. The finishing 2-1 Morocco win is totally fair. Argentina surely did not deserve to win. Apart from that, and just to be clear, no one in Argentina takes this team seriously. Mascherano has proven to be unfit to coach over and over again. He failed miserably during the U-20 WC Qualifiers, finishing second to last, and therefore should've not been in the U-20 WC. Since Indonesia was then banned due to political conflicts, and Argentina was the chosen as the new U-20 WC hosts (a complete disaster of it's own), he was given another chance and, what a surprise, yet another laughable, pathetic performance of his team. But at least Uruguay got to celebrate with their own in the end. In the Olympics Qualifiers, they got second place, behind Paraguay, who just lost 5-0 vs Japan. In fact, most will be surprised if the team even qualifies for the next round.

Ok - not communicating that the game is not over was bad - but I get waiting to do the VAR check until the players return. From the outside this might look like a weird situation but I wouldn't be suprised if the announcement of the match status was delayed on purpose. After all several incidents in recent memories have shown that it can be rather hard to deal with an unruly crowd of football fans. So telling them the match is over and having them clear the stands before continuing the game sounds like a pretty safe solution. I can only imagine the scenes if they had tried to clear the stands by force .. that'd have been one way to turn the stadium into a warzone 🤨 Not to mention french stadiums haven't exactly had the best track record in crowd control recently..

The match was fraught from the start because of the behaviour of the Argentine team after the Copa Americana. Their racist remarks about the French team and the French were broadcast over the internet. So the French hated the Argentine team. Heavy atmosphere looking for a way to express itself, and it found it at time of the second Argentine goal. Once the teams was off the field, I would imagine, not claiming to know, that they needed to be back on the field to continue the game in light of any VAR decision. So the VAR delay may be easily explainable in light of having to clear the field for the players’ safety.

The whole football communication thing is honestly still such a weird thing about the sport. This is a sport where we can have one mistake being accidently woven into a result that will just stay for years. And yet when you have some mistakes like goalline technology not being there to confirm a goal, requests for fouls that clearly outright happened, and many other things. Being completely ignored sometimes after being initially brought up, even sometimes with no means of other officials actually properly correcting it when EVERYONE ON TV including opposition has seen the mistake. But when you've got something like an OG that arguably should be credited to another player, they "bring in the experts" to measure everything. What the actual fuck is going on with this sport sometimes???

Another example against var. Not because any call was wrong, wrong calls will happen regardless of var. The controversy, the added time and the additional hours are a result of referees trained to work within a system that doesn't allow them the authority to control the match. All referees now know that any decision they make can be overturned during the game. Anyone working without authority to completely control their assigned task because a supervisor is watching over their shoulder is going to make more mistakes, be less decisive and whenever possible leave the decision to the overseer. Result: longer games, more controversy and stronger emotions. The referees should be viewed as parents and given that level of authority over proceedings. Save var for dishing out after-match penalties. During matches please VAR OUT!

I think they probably did everything right, but due to the circumstances it looked a bit strange. The only question I have is why the ref had to go to the VAR screen. From what I've always heard, the ref don't check for offside and just go by what VAR says. It's either offside or onside and not down to a decision, unless of course it's a case of "is the player interfering" or something like that, but that wasn't the case this time. So the ref surely just have to show that VAR determined that it was offside and then play on. But that is really just a minor thing. When it comes down to it, the fact is that if the crowd hadn't decided to act like twats, there wouldn't be an issue. The ref would have called offside within a minute or two, then they would have played whatever time was left (according to the ref) and then the game would end. Would not have been a story. P.S. I'm so fucking tired of all the people running onto the pitch or acting like cretins in the stand. I wish we could identify them all and then ban them for life or atleast 20-30 years. Also, since the camera usually try to not show people running onto the pitch, can't the rest of the media do the same? What's the point of not showing it live, when I will be bombarded with pictures of the fuckers when I go to read the news?

That referee didnt have a clue about football, 2 moroccan bumped to each other and he ruled foul against Argentina, most of us argentines are ok with the ruled off goal, the thing is all that came after and the really poor security for an olympic game, ton of ppl getting into the pitch, firecracker got into the stadium (or were there already prepared) also set a weird precedent, so if my team had some wrong calls, all I have to do is tell to 3 or 4 fans to get into the pitch to try to delay the game, then go to VAR and make them watch the play again, or something like that? That game should have over after the goal, and Argentina shouldnt have showed up to the restart, security was compromised, and all that shit, doesnt matter if the stadium was empty. The correct thing here was, review the goal instantly, and then you suspend the match, or you suspend the match and the score remains, that is what happened since football was invented.

But the goal being given to Argentina would not mean a win for it. It would be a tie, 2-2. It's a pretty important detail, dude.
