Just a fun fact: Guru Dutt, Shyam Benegal, Anant&Shankar Nag, Deepika&Prakash Padukone, Girish Karnad, Amrita Rao( Vivah), Radhika Pandit all belong to a small cast in coastal Karnataka called "Chitrapur Saraswats" and most of them are related to each other, although they all grew up in various other big cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai and Hubli. They all speak Konkani as their mother tongue invariably.

Thanks for this information. I knew about Guru Dutt and Shyam Benegal being related to each other but wasn't aware about others. Karnataka has given great musicians and theatre artists to India. Girish Karnad, and Nag brothers are superb actors.

Saraswat Brahmins(Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmins) are in general talented people., like their counterpart Kashmiri Saraswat Brahmins(Kashmiri Pandits) and Panjabi Saraswat Brahmins, originated from ancient Saraswati river bank, then moved to far north Kashmir then six centuries ago from Kashmir, migrated southward to Goa, where they adopted Konkani language and culture, later moved to Western Ghats of Karnataka then settled in the Coastal Karnataka 3 Centuries ago , where they adopted local village names as Surnames. At the beginning of the 19th centuries majority of them migrated to Mumbai and some in Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad, leaving their Properties, agricultural lands, and temples, Chitrapur Math in Coastal Karnataka.

​@@mb-hb1fr Yes, Girish Karnad , also Guru Datt, Prakash Padukone, Shyam Benegal , Amrita Rao are Konkani speaking Saraswat Brahmins whose ancestors migrated from Kashmir, to Goa then to Coastal Karnataka in 17th century.

@@mattihallis yes you are absolutely correct.The talent of Chitrapur Saraswats is fulsome not only on the silver screen ,it is continued ( in changing and changed times) by actors like Leena Chandavarkar and still later Dipika Padukone, whose father Prakash shone in the world of badminton...... and,to switch areas of activity,as India marks 75 years of adoption of its Constitution,which is the bedrock of our democracy,we remember Benegal Narsing Rau,who had a major role in drafting the Constitution at the behest of the Constituent assembly,which preceded the Parliament in India. I started my career with Shyam babu assisting his editor then Bhanudas Divkar and graduated to shoot a film for him, Sardari Begum, It was a great learning experience with him Govind Nihalani and V.K Murthy who were gracious enough to accept me as their decipleAll because of Shyam babu

No. Not many people are comfortable articulating their thoughts in Hindi even if they can speak or understand it. Hindi wasn’t Benegal’s mother tongue. Purpose of language is to communicate and they are all doing it pretty damn well.
