Yep, or you used something called a half sheath which only covered half the blade. Apparently those were pretty common in Scotland as they would have their Claymores in such a sheath on their backs since they were too long to wear on their hip.

@@thatoneothergamer6158 those kind of sheaths were mostly used for extremely large blades like claymores that weren't practical to wear on the hip. For longsword, like what the master sword is modeled after, it was rare for it to be kept in such a sheath but not unheard of. Blades kept that way did require more maintenance though so you are correct a about the down side to having a sheath like that.

It's totally possible to unsheathe a sword on your back. The sheathe has to be tied near the shoulder, this allows the the sheathe to be pulled up as you draw the sword, Witcher 3 shows this pretty well as Geralt uses left hand to lift the sheathe as he draws his sword.

Thus, they hastily mirrored Twilight Princess for its Wii port (Note that Link’s a lefty in the GCN and WiiU versions), and made him a full righty for the heavily motion-controlled Skyward Sword. Link’s been a righty in BotW and TotK, but I wanna say he’s been left-handed in every game outside those three examples.

You can put a sword on the back, there is historical evidence for it. There are 3 ways to do this: have a soft scabbard, have it lose enough that you can fully roll the sword on the shoulder and then pull it downwards, or you have a side slit in the scabbard. Shadiversity made their own side slit scabbard for a war sword (its the middle ground between an arming sword and a great sword, two handed), and actually showed and used a soft one for an arming sword. Scabbards don't have to be hard and don't have to be completely solid all the way up. Its like the misconception that swords are heavy, a single handed sword should way around 1kg (give or take a few hundred grams), where a large part of the weight (between 1/3 to 1/2) is the handle and pommel so they are manoeuvrable like a lightsabre (to say it in simple terms).

Fun fact, noble. You actually can draw a sword from your back. And the sword can be of any length, even a great sword. Just so long as you're using a specially designed scabbard for it. One of my favorite medieval enthusiast, KZbin's named Shanna versity actually created a special scabard for drawing a great sword from your back. He calls it the shaberd.
