Well, it makes a lot of sense. Maybe that's why constantly wears a smile on his face. It would literally be a part of the mask. I imagine it would have went a little like this. Someone stumbles upon the mask or the man (Happy mask salesman. I'm just going to refer to him as Happy for short) . Happy is somehow changed into a mask either by a powerful being or from whomever he encountered. Happy would have been a happy and cheery guy judging from his face, but this was only because he was seen like that before he died. After he was turned into a mask, the person who had changed him wore the mask, but may not have some problem with the mask. Either that, or he really just likes his "favorite mask". I dunno, that's just what I'm thinking. Probably not true at all though.

Hey what do you think about this theory. The Happy Mask Salesman had given the mask to the skull kid after Happy Mask Salesman had murdered majora and had lied about it just to cover up the evidence and had tricked the people into having a celebration just so that link would be killed by skull kid but had at least that part if the back up plan back fire on him. When Happy Mask Salesman had given viewers the angry face he was secretly showing his true intentions towards link and us.

I see the Happy Mask Salesman as a representation of Miyamoto entering his own games. The character Happy Mask Salesman is slightly crazy, which is great because he's flexible. He's capable of relaxing his mind and believing his role in the game, but can also partly realize his control over the worlds, winding back time for Link, creating a giant Piano. Just like Miyamoto, he could just relax and play the games he's made and be absorbed into the world, but also, he creates them and has full control over the characters and what they experience. The Mario mask is really the main clue towards it, I feel like for Miyamoto, he's wearing that mask every time he relaxes to play Mario, not literally (well maybe) but figuratively. It also works with the theory of Link being dead in this particular game. The Mask Salesmans presence, because he's slightly connected as Miyamoto, would represent a darker death like realm to the characters in the games. The realization that they aren't real (Link Mario etc) begins to creep in and it makes for weird ass games like Majoras Mask. It's like they suggested what's beyond the 4th wall without fully breaking it. lol I dunno, that's my theory.

True, I recently watched a video about Link not being dead. The part that killed it for me is the guy who can sense ghostly spirits when Link wears the Deku, Goron or Zora mask, but senses nothing when Link isn't wearing the mask. I might go over my theory and see if I can still think of the Happy Mask Salesman in the same way :p

I remember the first time playing MM and just feeling how everything in Termina just was based off the Majora Mask and Happy Mask Salesman, it didn't even feel like a real world compared to Hyrule. How all the balloons and bricks had that Majora symbol on it and how weirdly colorful everything was, it all just looked made up by someone, wich could be the Salesman. How come he leave just the day before the moon is going to crush down on everyone? How does he know everything about everyone, if you wear the masks you collect from people in Termina he weirdly answer who it belongs to and their backstory, like he has created everyone by himself, like he has everything all planned out, so this theory could make sense in the story plot. Its even weird that the only thing he does in the whole game is standing inside the clock tower waiting for Link to bring him his mask, only to use him to destroy the evil within it and then leave... More like evil mask salesman to me.

I think the happy mask sales man is a sage, Sage of time. I think he works for the godess of time and I believe he used Link to beat Majora because it's stronger than the Goddess of time. The Goddess of time could only temporarily undo the effects of Majora's destruction.

+Nii Kojo Simple, just pay attention to the details. She is the one That teachs you the song of time. She is the one That gave you the ocarina of time. Remember, she is considered as the seventh and final sage, and every sage has a temple to guard. hers is the temple of time. The temple of time is also the place where she reveals she disguised herself as a sheika in order to fool ganondorf. And at the end, She plays the ocarina of time to make Link go back in time and enjoy his childhood.

The big thing he blatantly left out was the cut scene after you get your ocarina. Zelda tells him that the Goddess of Time will always watch over him. She is who's responsible for giving Link and his ocarina the ability to manipulate time because she is the Goddess of Time. Also, she knows Link isn't supposed to die in Termina which is why she reboots the 3 days to when Link has to start over because the moon lands. Knowing Link is a hero she doesn't just solve the issue for him on her own, she makes the hero be a hero. But because she can control time and "speaks to you from the edge of time" in Skyward Sword, so she probably knows all the timelines and whats good. The Goddess of Time is what keeps Link going in Majora's Mask. The happy mask salesmen isn't magical, he just deals with magical objects. He pulled the piano out of his ass like I pull a RPG out of my ass in GTA. It's not meant to be thought too much into. Link can pull trumpets out of the Deku scrubs butt, and drums and a guitar out of a Goron and a Zora respectively. Too many holes for me.

Wow, this is an amazing theory. I totally agree. Zelda's always there to guide Link to heroism. I think maybe Zelda, being the goddess of time, foresaw link falling to his death so she created Termina to give him another quest and remember who he is. At the end he finally accepts this and gets back home.

I have a theory. What if Ravio from ALBW ( links alter ego) decided to be a hero like Link after Lorule's triforce was restored. He could have used the triforce to go back in time and prove himself a hero in Link's timeline. He might be in the Minish cap. There he learned the powers of magic from Ezlo, but became evil. What if Ravio is Vaati? But what if after he was defeated in multiple games, even after traveling far in the future (four swords adventures) he became good again, and spent the rest of his life time traveling and giving wisdom? What if Vaati was the Happy Mask Salesman? The HMS has PTSD from his time from Vaati, explaining his mood swings and unpredictable nature. All three characters wear purple, and the HMS being a sorcerer makes much more sense than him being a deity. Lastly, it explains the HMS's fascination with Link. There may be holes in this theory, but it is just fun.

I liked this theory, but I'm going to nitpick here. 8:04 'The Happy Mask Salesmans could have created Termina'. That's actually quite unlikely considering that there is a description from the Official Zelda website (Zelda.com) about the creation of Termina: Termina: When Hyrule was created by the three goddesses at the beginning of time, there were certain side effects of its creation which Din, Nayru and Farore did not anticipate. As the three holy women breathed life into the world and chased away Emptiness, their potent breath slipped through tiny cracks in the folds of space and *created millions of alternate worlds in the process. One of these worlds became the land known as Termina* It was actually the Goddesses who had accidentally created Termina instead of the Happy Mask Salesman. However, it is possible the Happy Mask Salesman has some kind of influence over Termina such as sending Link back after the moon crashes. Although, it could have been the Goddess of Time, but we can only speculate.

+The One That said, it is quite suspicious how within Termina the same masks that were powerless in Hyrule can take on magical properties, and how the entire world of Termina seems to incorporate masks a great deal. We also know it hasn't just popped out of thin air because Skull Kid has history with the giants, and Skull Kid shows up again later down the line so Termina doesn't just disappear once the Mask Salseman leaves. Bushflare Yeah, the masks in Termina seem to be infused with a spirit or magic. The only mask from Hyrule that has some sort of power is the Mask of Truth. It is interesting that even the masks has counterparts as the Mask of Truth, Bunny Hood, Keaton Mask, Zora Mask and Goron Mask are both seen in Hyrule and Termina.

It seems like, tying this and some of the other videos on Majora's Mask together, him being a Sheikh is a decent theory. With them being the original creators/summoners of Majora, they were presumably also the ones that used that spell to turn it into a mask and seal it away. _It'd certainly explain why he has that Mask of Truth with their logo on it._ The general trend seems to be that the Sheikh are an ancient group that has had a hand in almost all of the games, and are probably highly related to how the series ties together as a whole (albeit weird and fractured among split paths) storyline.

I honestly thought the happy mask sales man was a warlock or something with multiple personality disorder and was cursed. I always thought he collected masks because they were bits of his mortal personality and that he can only be happy or angry without wearing the masks. I don't know, my thoughts are a little far fetched but I just imagined him having to live the same life over and over again (reincarnation like link) and I felt like Majoras mask was his only cure and that's why you never see him again after and that's why he says you've met with a terrible fate. That's why I thought he must have to be a reincarnation or lives forever through his curse until it has been broken. MAYBE he was greedy once and that's why he was cursed. I don't know but I would like your thoughts on my childhood speculation hah.

or the happy mask salesman is actually one of the creators of the legend of zelda. when you play games it's for you to escape to another world to have fun in and we look at those character as if it were us. in a sense when we play games we put on a mask, much like the masksales man carrys and sells. the mask sales man has a mario mask that could represent the mario games. also it would make sense that the mask sales man knows what link dose in the game becuse he is the one who is creating the storie and thats why he trust link will save the day.

Well this is a pretty solid theory, but I would like to suggest that the Downfall timeline seems more like a separate universe, like "What if Link was defeated? This timeline will then occur." The Downfall Timeline is separated from the Child and Adult timelines. While the Child and Adult timelines are like two universes Link accidentally created by pulling out the master sword and travels between both times too much. They do not meet, sure, but they exist together. What I mean is, the Downfall timeline exists only if the Child and Adult timeline doesn't exist, only if Link was defeated. Vise versa with the Child Timeline. So it can be reasonable for the Happy Mask Salesman to exist in the Oracle game AND Ocarina of Time + Majora's Mask. If Link was defeated, he would continue his business as usual. If Link was successful, he would somehow follow him to Termina and... that's for another day. I just don't think the fact that he exist in both timelines is a solid evidence to him being a deity. (I am still sitting here defending for the bosses' innocence (?) in the game because the line of good and evil is blurry)

First of all, the Happy Mask Salesman's first appearance was in Ocarina of Time, not Oracle of Ages. And second, it is never implied that the Salesman from OoT/MM is the same one from OoA. The Salesman found in OoA could be a descendant of the one found in OoT/MM. Him appearing in different games doesn't mean he is a deity, as many incarnations of many characters have appeared in different games. For example Malon has appeared in four different games, she also has a counterpart in Termina named Romani and Marin has been said to be her Kohlint Island counterpart.

I don't know if anyone will really see this but, I was watching some salesmen thing on my lunch break and it made me realize that the mask salesmen was an interloper who tried to conquer hyrule with the power of transfusing majora and some other dark powers to be sealed into the shadow realm. So basically midna's ancestor. So that would mean link helped destroy hyrule when he was searching for navi. Not sure who the other two interlopers are. If you watch the cutscene in twilight princess and understand that majora is the same mask that was fused with some other stuff to make what midna wears. It would put a large perspective on who he is.

+Dr.Wily that was a good explanation, I haven't thought of it that way, however I see one hole in your story. in the manga (which is canon because it is used in Hyrule historia) when link defeats majora, the happy mask salesman gets the majora mask and exclaims about how he used link to reacquire it however when fierce deity link tries to destroy the happy mask salesman (along with majoras mask) link says "get lost troublemaker) indicating that this whole disaster was caused by the happy mask salesman then after the happy mask salesman dodged link's attack he evilly laughs while while he disappears somehow through magic, so my counter theory is that the happy mask salesman is a deity however like you said he was weaker than majora so maybe when he realized that majora could manipulate him like he did to the skull kid he attempted to weaken majora by creating termina so link could defeat majora and -because he was weaker- he could claim majora's power and become even stronger that would explain why majora was trying to destroy clock town so his power wouldn't be claimed by the happy mask salesman and it would also explain his evil laugh at the end of the manga, I suggest reading it, it's pretty cool.

In the manga version it is seen that the mask salesman was doing all of this and fierce deity pursues him and says "go away troublemaker " even though it is not canon but your theory explains this

Just a tid bit: I think the mask salesman would be Egyptian or part Gerudo because of his collar and wrist jewlery. The Egyptians loved these kinds of jewlery and often used them for protection against evil spirits or religion.

My headcannon is that Hylia tasked the HMS as a demi-god, his job is to go around spreading happiness and protect the lands from ultra destructive dark magic that wouldn't fall under the hero of times jurisdiction It'd make sense why he's so obsessed with masks, knows so much more than he let's on, and travels all over the worlds. He messed up and Link ended up being called to clean up his mess

The non-canon comic by Akira Himekawa seems to answer a lot of questions regarding the mask salesman and Majora's mask that leads me to a theory. The comic is about a *mysterious traveler* that grants the dragon, Majora, the wish to not be lonely and die. A song is played for 3 days and 3 nights that relieves him of his loneliness and relieves him of life, easing his soul. This traveler takes his armor and makes it into a mask hoping to seal his power into the mask. With the amount of power that you mentioned he had, this seems to be no real issue for him. He seems to be able to cross/manipulate time and space as you mentioned in this video (not to mention he has Mario's mask hinting at crossing dimensions even though I think there's a theory that the Mario world and Hyrule are in the same world), while at the same time not having the power to stop a raging Majora (both, in Majora's mask AND in the comic). However, if trapping the souls negative/cursed energies in the mask is the reason something like the Fierce Deity mask exists, then it'd make perfect sense for Majora's Mask to have the same power as Fierce Deity, only to be Majora's timeless and explosive rage. For 3 days and 3 nights, he danced and died, just to be trapped in a mask. Now he's forcing everyone to die in 3 days and 3 nights. Also, the song of healing only appearing in Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess and is only really taught to link (originally) by the mask salesman? You have everything you need for the theory of the Masked Salesman being the "Mysterious Traveler". Not to mention, the masked salesman IS a mysterious traveler, who wishes to bring happiness, and was able to bring happiness to the most unhappy being he knew of, Majora. Link helped defeat the evil in Majora's mask, and now Majora is truly in peace.

biggest hole in this is skull kid encounters link before he enters termina, you see him being teleported there through a portal after he falls, after the skull kid steals his horse, if the mask were trapped there it wouldn't be able to leave to lure him in and if it did escape, it wouldn't want to go back.
