I really would’ve put Lanayru Sand Sea somewhere on this list too. It’s so atmospherically and certainly fits the barren enormity of a desert, whilst also incorporating a certain swash-buckling grandeur appropriate to its pirate theme. Great video otherwise!

Honestly I would’ve put TP’s Garudo Desert theme as number 1 As much as I love OoT’s Garudo Desert theme it sounds a bit too much like a cowboy western track with the guitar so I would probably switch it for 2nd place TP’s desert theme just sounds so badass with the guitar ,epic vocals , and is very fitting in sounding like you’re roaming through a scorching sandy land full of dangerous enemies

Hidden Village’s random western theme better make that list 😂 (It ain’t appropriate for the Sheikah...buuuut it does fit a Ghost Town and taking back said Ghost Town fairly well. Then again? This time they went with a more Southwestern Nations theme for the Sheikah than prior incarnations being shinobi...so maybe it does? Huh... (Listen close and you can hear that it’s really Kakariko’s Motif rearranged into a minor mode (which that same motif is reused in BotW’s Kakariko Village and Title themes...which is fitting, considering the game’s really about Zelda (the Silent Princess) and Sheikah (their technology))

I love many of Zelda's themes. My favorite game series ever. But my personal favorite desert theme in Zelda so far is Lanayru Desert in Skyward Sword. So many Zelda themes I never get tired of.

Aeroderas Mmmm...I think any of the SS desert themes easily surpassed GV and deserved that #1 spot, with Gerudo Desert remaining at #2, BotW’s to #3 (if not taken by a SS desert theme-that region outdid itself with music while the rest was “meh”), TH’s no higher than #4 (it’s a bit too peppy, and “pyramid-y” which...ain’t accurate to Egyptian or Ancient Egyptian music, even for a wacky game)...with finally Gerudo Valley no higher than #4-5. Oh, it’s a gorgeous arrangement, but not the best. And it quite literally has an identity crisis when you consider they used a mariachi’s instrumentation, but they made the Amazonian Gerudo “pseudo Arab AND Romani” with their physical features and flimsy bellydancer costumes (racist much...?) Like, those clothes would be terrible for BOTH the desert climate and actually being a combatant? It’s...literally a stereotype for its design choice at all??? (And not even the same one as what they picked for the music! SMH...) And, really. There are so many desert cultures in the Americas to choose from (and a wealth of mexican-specific music) than...miriachi. Which is again a stereotype. Like...the Gerudo in OoT are a smorgasbord of Brown Stereotypes all smashed together, and it gets reflected in the music. (...but it didn’t have to be!!! The same song with different instruments (and the N64 had the hardware could do it!), the Gerudo with better costume design, and...presto! The song and its culture now fit eachother!)

(Before watching) The Spirit Temple theme is such an amazing theme, not least cause it's a final temple theme. All the other temples have music that matches the environment (creepy but calming in the forest temple, dark and terrifying in the shadow temple etc.). The Spirit Temple has that too, and the moment you step through the entrance there's that 'in your face' CHIME CHIME and you instantly understand how severe the situation is. THIS is an adult dungeon. A collosus hidden in the depths of a wasteland, inhabited by two witches with black magic. And you know that this is the turning point. The whole tune just screams "You probably won't survive in here, and if you don't - hyrule will fall."

Ohhhh id not heard the botw one before! I think it might be my favourite! I don’t have a switch and I’m trying to save myself from spoilers so I’d not heard it before. I think that music in particular captured the bleak feel of a desert, equally so it could have worked for a very cold place because that in its own way is also a desert. Personally I would disagree with “calm” it sounded more, not unnerving, but more on the uncomfortable side of things. I find it very interesting that the composer chose to not obviously use influences from different cultures music as the other 4 tracks on this list do but rather it focuses on the idea of the desert and just that, none of the people or cultures around the desert just the desert. I think that’s a really interesting take on it and I’ll have to listen to more of the botw soundtrack, it might really help my own composing! I love your lists and as a musician who loves analysing music for days I find these videos particularly fun :)

Gerudo Valley’s a good piece of music...but it kinda has an identity crisis: -it’s styled as a mariachi band -the inhabitants wear belly dancer costumes...which are terribly impractical for both battle and dealing with the desert’s harsh sun and stinging sands -the gamemakers couldn’t decide if they wanted the Gerudo to be Arab, Romani, or Amazonian (and...took the most negatively stereotypical features and cranked it to 11) -the Gerodo later dance a freaking cancan during the epilogue...which...okay??? Uhhh...that’s...a prostitute dance. And the Gerudo only mated with men for their race’s survival... -their temple has Hindu influences now ...so it comes across as less like MultiInspired...and more like cultural appropriation. (Which OoT already got in trouble for using a Muslim chant for one of the temples to make it sound “evil”) At least later games picked an identity and ran with it...at least as reflected by their instrumentation for other desert themes (Arab, by using Arab modes. Although sometimes a random sitar is used. Which...sorry, but cacti, pyramids, sitars, and Arab modes are NOT “all the same”) What would be interesting would be to hear the original (or slightly rearranged) Gerudo Valley music with either full-on Arab or Indian music with a culture to match, or Meso-Spanish (or perhaps other other Central or South American cultures instead-Peruvian or Chilean, maybe?) music with again a culture that matched. The OoT one is kinda a hotmess. (Which you can make the current arrangement sound more Arab with the right instrumentation, as the Moors greatly influenced Iberian Cultures, as well as being extremely multicultural. Keep the guitar, but add in an oud. Nix the trumpet in favor of a ney flute. Throw in a fiddle-violins work with any of the “base cultures” musical identities. Any of the “base cultures” have a much richer musical heritage than...mariachi, that still would’ve worked with the same arrangement. And mariachi wouldn’t have been bad if they actually honored mexican culture with the Gerudo vs making them...ambiguously brown (but copy&pasting other cultures stereotypes))
