The manga version of this is even more painful, as after Link realizes what waking the Wind Fish would do to Koholint, he insists on leaving the island immediately, and inviting Marin to join him in doing so. He gets a boat, loads it with supplies, sets out with Marin and mans the oars, determinedly paddling away from Koholint... ...and goes nowhere. He rows for hours on end, but Koholint always looms on the horizon. Marin eventually has to stop Link from rowing, his hands bloody and blistered, and get him to admit there really is only one way for him off of Koholint... and one way for him alone.

And then you have to think... will you wake the fish to release him and free yourself or... stay there with Marin and the others... and maybe... just maybe... still have a nice life... your own happy ending.... This game hit me so hard, when I got through it as an adult. I think there's a theme here about allowing yourself to let go, in order to progress in life. Sometimes you have to leave a place that you love, let go of a relationship, move on to another job, even though staying where you are is the easy thing. Because if you don't, you can't grow. You won't change. Things may not get worse, but they also don't get any better. The experience is painful, but ultimately liberating. The whole "it was all a dream" trope is so hard to pull off, since nothing mattered as nothing was real. However, LA exsicutes it brilliantly. Yes it was all a dream, but not Links dream. Which means, to link, everyone and everything he saw was real. His life was in genuine danger, and the wind fish sleeping could cause issues in the real world. Yes it was all a dream, but it was one of the most important dreams Link would ever experience.

I wish there was a future game where Marin comes back, maybe a character who can be both a human and seagull. She could make a reference that she grew up on an island that disappeared long ago, before it faded away, she asked the guardian of the island for a wish to be able to leave the island. She was granted the wish to become a seagull where fate would have it that she would reunite with the hero in the green tunic, wielding the sword and shield.

Nice. But there's something about human voiceovers, however well 'executed' that I don't like. I love the ethereal sounds and cryptic mumbles of the Sheika Monks in Breath. So let me get this straight. The wind fish sucks me into its dream after destroying most of my raft. It then wakes up, leaps over me and the small bit of my boat that's left, and leaves me abandoned In the middle of the ocean, floating on a bit of wood, completely helpless and most likely fated to die? How cool. That windfish. A bit of a dick.

@@AlvinaYunoa The timeline in reality is hastily thrown together crap. Nintendo never really gave it much thought, and the official timelines were made long after the game was released (which is why BotW tries to do away with it all). However, if you consider that LA was released in 1993, and Ocarina of Time was around 1997, then you can see how it fits. Besides, in an interview around the release of OoT, it was mentioned Malon was deliberately modelled after Marin.

Still one of my favorite Zelda games. Was the first one I ever played too. Can we just take a moment to appreciate the amazing redo of the Face Shrine song in the Link's Awakening Remake? This being the first dungeon where you really learn the truth about the island. You have to *Face* the reality of what your actions will do and the music reflects it in such a wonderful way. Dark, Dreary and miserable but also somber and peaceful. A choice has to be made...Wake the Wind Fish and shatter the illusion... or stay here and remain asleep in the real world. It's so heart crushing. Before this version of the game The Ballad of the Windfish was actually my favorite Zelda Song. After this remake... the Face Shrine Song took that spot, with the Ballad in second. Also I recognized that version of the Ballad of Windfish, it's one of my most played songs on Amazon :)

7:24 The direct translation from the Japanese game is: Legends Of Zelda : Island Seen in Dream or Dream Island Something along those lines. Watching all of your Zelda lore videos has made me realize just HOW MUCH Hidetaka Miyazaki was insipired by Zelda when he created the Souls series. The storytelling of the Dark Souls games has such a huge focus on cycles of civilization, the concept of reincarnation, and indirect storytelling thru visual and audial cues - just like the Zelda games. Your videos have showed me just how interconnected all the Zelda games are to each other - much like how each Souls game (including Bloodborne) is connected to the others. I'm gonna have to replay a lot of Zelda games..

I like how they made the timeline official and canon, and even set it up in some games (Skyward Sword for the reincarnation cycle and the true origin of the Master Sword) and referencing it in others. I love it when fan theories/ideas/trying to make a meta is incorporated by the creators and made legit canon.

15:34 The entire last section of this video speaking of Marin wishing to just fly away like a bird brings back memories of Naruto Shippuden’s opening “Blue Bird”. In it, the lyrics: “飛翔(はばた)いたら 戻らないと言って” can be heard, which translate to “ You said if you could take flight, you would never come back…”… which kind of echoes with Marin saying she would fly far away if she were a bird . Also, the song mentions “未知なる世界の 遊迷(ゆめ)から目覚めて この羽根を広げ 飛び立つ” can be translated as … “ As you awaken from the dream of an unknown world Spread your wings and fly “ which is \exactly\ what Marin did at the ending of this game….😊 Good song, good game👏🏾

I find that Link's Awakening and Phantom Hourglass' stories to be bit similar. -Both games started and ended in the sea. -You both need to defeat a parasitic shadow entity (Bellum/Nightmares). -Both villains look like a giant eye with tentacles. -Both villains infested a magical whale-like creature (Oshus/Windfish). -You both got transported to another world/dimension. -You were both guided by an entity that turned out to be a guardian spirit (Ciela/Owl). Given that Link's Awakening and Phantom Hourglass exist in different timelines (Fallen and Child timeline, respectively), I like to think that Bellum and the Nightmares are the same entity and by extension Oshus and the Windfish as well. And that Phantom Hourglass is the alternate version of Link's Awakening. Just a theory...
