I thought the expression came from the Moon itself, not Majora. Majora isn’t possessing it, just pulling it down. The moon’s grimace is it fighting with all it has, battling to protect its people- and losing to Majora’s dark might. It cries as it falls, hoping it can be stopped before it destroys its followers, until Link defeats Skull Kid and Majora takes direct control.
@kenhollis61973 жыл бұрын
This was a fascinating theory that I hadn't thought of before. That the moon is crying because it's being forced to destroy what it means to protect is particularly moving. And supposing that the moon is a guardian deity, the fact that Majora was able to control it as well as imprison the Four Giants makes Majora all the more frighteningly powerful than it already was.

In a book about the game from Japan it says the inside of the moon is the only dream part of Termina. It is supposed to represent the mind of the Skullkid, who's grief and anger has been twisted by Majora's mask. The moon children like to play games and ask those strange introspective questions: "your true face", "what is right", "what is a friend" those are the thoughts that torment the Skullkid. That's why there is a tree, and a field symbolising the Kokiri forest with one child sitting: the Skullkid, and four children playing: the four giants who cast the Skullkid out. The moon is connected to the spiritual side of Termina, and when their world was overtaken by fear, Majora's mask was given the opportunity to corrupt the moon. I believe the Fierce Deity mask may embody what the moon is: Terminan's happiness. That's why there's marking of the moon covering the deity's armour and the mask has lunar white eyes. Another interesting piece of information is Majora embodies the sun, the mask emblem is sun shaped in the battle arena and certain attacks are sun related. The moon existed before according to the Terminan's, and possibly had a neutral face as opposed to being faceless, the mayor had the same moon face chair in the original concept art too.
@chaoticneutralsheep3 жыл бұрын
@A B Majora's mask has memories of those that have held onto it, and the happy mask salesman carried it for some time before Skullkid showed up. Link is also another young character and this makes the dream world show only the moon children in a way he can interpret them. In the Nintendo Miiverse during 3D Majora's mask release, someone in Nintendo speaking for the happy mask salesman said this: "I'm not too sure, but judging by the fact that they live on the moon, surely they cannot be normal children...? I have not met them in person, but I am pretty certain they must be some figment created by Majora's Mask. Perhaps they look like children because Link is himself but a child? Oh, look, they have the same hairstyle as me. So young, and yet so stylish!"

I've always assumed the moon's scary face is actually a grimace. The moon is straining against being pulled to Termina, it's struggling against the power, in vain, and that's why the face looks so strained. I also assumed the moon doesn't actually disappear at the end of the game, I figure it was teleported back to where it's supposed to be. Because getting rid of it... I mean I feel like having a moon is kind of important?

The moon's face actually changes after Majora enters it: aside from the eyes starting to glow, its mouth also opens, making it appear enraged. Beyond that, something worth noting is that until recently, the moon likely may not have been close enough for most people to notice that it had a face: the astronomer, who uses the telescope, doesn't seem to react, but ordinary people, like the twin jugglers, did. In addition, its proximity may be what allows the Tears to actually make it to the surface. The planet's gravity may not be strong enough to pull them in from so far away, and even if it could, they are small enough that they would probably burn up completely in the atmosphere before they make it.

The same "No one in the entire game mentions it having a face being abnormal" point still undermines your argument. The moon symbols at the mayors office show it with essentially the same facial expression, albeit less intense, as if it were far enough away to not notice the malice. The eyes are the only part we can definitively connect to Majora's magic, the rest can be assumed to be normal.

I remember seeing the moon “cry” for the first time as a kid and felt so bad, it was utterly terrifying to see that face looming over Link constantly but those tears made me wonder if that expression was a sign of its misery and frustration of not being able to do anything. The tears and the face made me think it was sentient and around that time I ended up personifying the moon, referring to it with female pronouns due to all the mythology of the moon being a feminine force.

As I was first playing Breath of the Wild, I was looking for any Majoras Mask references that might be there, and decided to stare at the moon for a long time, thinking that there would be an Easter egg with the Blood moons or something. Instead, I ended up noticing something kinda interesting that might be a subtle nod. When the moon hits midnight, it rotates around 90 degrees and starts to head towards the horizon. The craters seemed to look vaguely like the imprint of a face, 2 eye divots, a longer crater that looked mouth-ish, stuff like that. It’s definitely not flat out eyeballs and teeth, but to me it seemed interesting nonetheless. Then I looked at a picture of the real moon and realized that the one in BotW wasn’t just a copy of the one irl, meaning that any details on it would have been deliberately put there by a developer. Plus the fact that the real moon doesn’t shift 90 degrees at midnight. I haven’t seen any theories about this detail ever crop up online, so I thought maybe a channel like this could take a look at the moon and confirm that I’m not just seeing things haha.

The German guidebook from the N64 version had the tendency to add additional 'background story details' about certain game elements, but these were loose interpretations made up by the respective editorial team, so obviously shouldn't be considered canon. Still, as a kid I took every info from this book at face value and I remember a paragraph regarding the tears that the moon apparently cries because it is shattered by Termina's unavoidable fate. That sentence left a strong impression on me for years since it was the only tiny bit of information about the mysterious ambivalent nature of the moon, especially since its role and omnipresence was more terrifying throughout the game.

It's possible that before Majora interfered, the moon had phases similar to ours but rather than the earth casting partial shadows on our moon, the face of their moon would gradually change expression. Therefore the "blue" in "once in a blue moon" refers to the moon appearing sad, and happiness was brought to it by having a carnival to celebrate the new season of harmony. It could also be said that rather than sadness, the moon might appear to be slumbering as shown on one of the masks on the happy mask salesman's bag. It looks almost identical to the one in the mayor's office, only with the opposite expression.

I've never really thought about this, I always just took it at face-value (pun intended). I overlooked what more there was to it, and just sort of saw the moon as an angry conjuring of Majora. Thinking about this more, though, it really does paint a different picture; I see the face so much differently. It's expression is not of anger and rage... It's pain. It's a guardian deity watching helplessly as it inches closer and closer to the people who revere it. Crying sacred tears of stone with each passing day. That could be why it takes three days: if Majora wants to just destroy termina, it would just do so. It is too relentless and violent to play games and wait. The three days are the moon struggling against Majora's influence, slowing it's descent. That's also why, at the end, the mask enters the moon to push it harder, forcing it against both the giants and the moon's own resistance.

Great video! I only have one point to bring up: The moon looks as if it is grimacing. If he used to be happy and smiling, because he is protecting his people, I think he had more control than most people think. I think he was grimacing on purpose, as he didn’t want it to happen but he knew it would. I think that the only thing Majora affected was the orbit of the moon. The moon knew what was happening the whole time, hence his face being a grimace. The only time he was truly possessed was in the final boss fight, when Majora physically enters the moon to possess it.

I'm part of the crowd who always assumed the moon was being warped back into it's proper orbit at the end, though I will admit that the effects do look like it's being obliterated from within. The best logic I've ever come up with for the "inside of the moon" is that it's actually a pocket dimension or spiritual zone of sorts. Similar to the final duel with Demise seemingly taking place atop the sky, this inner moon area is more of a magical construct than a proper physical location. Going with the idea that the moon is a deity in its own right, this area could be its own sacred realm. And the moon children may be splintered avatars of the moon's persona, much like the stray fairies found throughout the game's dungeons. This, I think, suggests that the Happy Mask Salesman himself is really something like an oracle or incarnation of the moon.

The 3DS version just looks angry and because of that, it isn't as scary. It's always freakier not being able to tell what someone (or something in this scenario) is feeling. I wish they would have changed the eyebrows a bit in the 3DS version.

Seems like moon always had a face Majora just corrupted it. Perhaps the Moon deity was like Hyrule’s 3 goddesses. It created the world. And then left that plane of existence leaving behind the moon as reminder that it was always looking down on its creation as a loving and benevolent creator.

Always figured it had to be some version of the actual moon, potentially transformed somehow. The ending resolution feels like something that only happened to it for simplicity's sake.

I'm reminded of an old webcomic that subscribed to the theory that the moon's expression is fear. It showed the moon falling to Termina with a monologue of "It's coming closer, everything will be destroyed," with the final panel revealing it to be coming from the moon itself as it thinks "The worst part is there's nothing I can do to stop it."

Even though I have no reason to believe this, I like to think that the moon is Termina's incarnation of Demise. This time he's just a big space rock and he's pretty mad about it.

Grimace seems an accurate description for the sentient deity, more than anything it seemed like it was trying to resist the power of the Mask which could very well be why it takes the three days we have to save Termina rather than its immediate destruction, and the tears represent the knowledge the moon has of this inevitability.

Your Majora's Mask theories are always my favorites. Maybe that's why that game is so good and particularly memorable. So many loose ends left up to interpretation. You're very good at what you do, either way.

I wonder what would happen if Ganondorf got ahold of Majora's mask. would they see each other as rivals since they want separate goals (subjugation vs destruction), would they try to influence or use one another's power?

My personal conspiracy theory is that the moon is Ganon/Demise haunting Link and symbolically vowing his inevitable return (And it works even better if you believe Termina is a dream and Link is dying/transforming into the Stalfos warrior from TP)

I've always been skeptical of whether the moon's face is actually in-world canon. I would think the moon's menacing face would be a big deal if they actually see it. Instead the opposite, a lot of people doubt the moon is actually a threat at all. In the content I've reviewed lately, that one single line from the juggler is the ONLY mention of the moon's face. It could be one of those things that only we the viewer see, and that one line is just an inconsistency among the massive amount of dialogue in this game. However I never gave any thought to that symbol above the mayor. The eyes in particular have a feel of consistency with the moon. And that symbol has been there since the original. So that does have me finally updating my opinion on that. Still a bit odd that the menacing face isn't a big deal in-world.

Small Game Artist here. I can prolly explain some points. Size. The initial game was planned with more days and therefore with greater distance. Distances and scaling objects is always a matter of recognition for the player, if they would have made the moon in a more realistic size it would have been too large and since its a n64 all textures would be just large giant pixels, which leads to the point when the moon is too close there wouldnt be any recognition at all, just super giant large pixels. The giants needed to be scaled to the moon as well proportionally for the cutscenes and we would had the same problem there. In games its always a problem with huge gigantess objects because the most common solution for that problem is up the resolution scale for the texture sets of that object which obv. is not possible for the n64 era. They also had a polycount limitation for the weak hardware so the recognition would have been even worse with super large poly and large giant pixels for the player. Next the face. The moon doesnt need to have a face to be a deity. Ancient ppl gave stellar objects faces, bodies and more so its not suprising that they made a moon with a face since they worshipping it. The more realistic way to explain why it has a face is majora, majora is a twisted being. Using the worshipped moon for its weapon of choice he shaped the moons appearance appealing to his own imaginations, so the people looking up seeing a raging evil face like the horror kid felt betrayed by his friends (gods guardians you name it), projecting the same image to the moon so now it betrays the people of termania. Tears...well should be logic after that text, the moon feels sorry and helpless being used as a weapon of destruction. Peace.
@obi-juankarlos24093 жыл бұрын
Maybe the moon has always had that grin, but because it used to be way up higher than it is during the game, people assumed it was a friendly smile, hence the Mayor's symbol being a smiley moon. Like those creepy "Ren & Stimpy's close up" where it looks awful up close lol
@AnAdorableWombat2 жыл бұрын
Or maybe it always had a smile but once it became under Majoras control, it became angry.
@Tam0039310 ай бұрын
The moon always looked to me like it was suffering, I can see anger in its expression, but I don't think it's angry with us, or with the people of Termina, but more angry in the sense of the 5 stages of grieve. The moon feels just as doomed as the people of Termina do, as much as Link does. I wonder how sentient the moon was? Was the moon aware of all the time traveling Link did throughout the game, just like the HMS seemed to be?

@@firestarter6488 there are some titles on the switch with the online feature and many many games on the 3ds and ds.
