Breakdown also takes place in zener diode but the difference between zener and avalanche breakdown is that - In Avalanche, breakdown takes place at high voltage whereas in zener, breakdown takes place at low voltage And whatever the process of breakdown, such diodes in which bteakdown process is used are called Zener diodes. 18:50 *thin depletion region = large electric field = more no.of electrons from p to n = more current without heat (No collision only high E)* Property of zener diode due to which it does not get destroyed.. Edit: when minority electron from p side moves through very thin depletion region, the possibility of collision with other electrons of 'Si' atom present in depletion later is very less due to which no heat is produces. Large amount of current is produced by the large amount of electrons that are moved by the very high *E* (zener) as (E = V/d )due to small distance of depletion region.
