Mike Use a cone that is slightly larger than the piece the o ring for the wheel fits on. Roll it down the cone onto the wheel. Assuming it’s a round or semi- round profile oring.

Right. My thoughts exactly. Maybe grease the outside of a tapered plastic cup. Flip it upside-down and slide the o-ring in place. Wa-lah!

Every single time I’ve had finish issues it’s been with the supply air. It needs to be filtered, have a moisture trap, then a dryer, then filtered again before hitting the gun. You also need a good compressor to keep up with a HVLP gun. Most home compressors can’t keep up.

Perhaps you missed all of my other painting videos where I showed my air system set up? I was reading a review of another paint gun by someone online and he said that his gun was leaking around some seals and letting air in to places that shouldn’t have air flowing. He was getting the same kind of grit in his paint. He rebuild his paint gun (or resealed it) and the problem went away. I actually think that might be what’s happening here since when the gun was new and I first started painting, I didn’t have this issue. It got worse as time went on. So it could be that the seals in my expensive “top of the line” DeVillbis gun didn’t even last long enough to paint on airplane. New gun on the way!

Hey Mark! I'm getting kinda excited and it's not even my project ! There is a neat little trick to installing the O Ring using a zip tie. I think that you can find it on Homebuilt Help. It involves incremently tightening the bolts as you work the ring outward. Then cutting the tie off and then sliding it into the groove. Thanks again for taking the time to keep us posted! Blue Skies!

Try stretching the O-Ring over the rim portion that you hold in your hand. That way you can secure the O-Ring in place with some electrical tape, then lower the rim onto the the other one. Then peal off the tape when you bolt the two halves together, and roll the O-Ring into place then. Cheers from Winnipeg.
@n206ja
@n206ja 3 жыл бұрын
I basically use the same technique as Peter, but didn't find it necessary to use tape - the tension of the O -ring held it in place until I was ready to let it slip down in the groove between the wheel halves. Be sure to copiously lubricate the O-ring with silicone grease or vaseline to ensure a good seal. It's an easy one-person job.

For mounting the O-ring in the center of the wheel, You could try putting a straight tube, or maybe coned the opposite direction to your wheel, thick papertubing, or what ever. Then bolt the wheelshalves together and finally pulling the mountingtube out. The o-ring shuld roll to the center because of the conical shape of teh wheelhalves. Just an idea, don´t kow if it would work.

What about 4-5 paper clip hooks on the top half of the wheel hub holding the O-ring in place while you bolt it together and then release when done?

On the wheels, I race karts and we had the same thing. Put the wheels together and then stretch the o ring over the back of the wheel. Lube the o ring first and it will be just fine. It seams k8nd of ruff but that is how it is done

Primer isn’t supposed to be smooth. It generally has fairly high solids content and is meant to provide a good surface for the topcoats. Having some tooth really helps the color coats to adhere well. Primer is not intended to be a final coat, other than for surfaces that don’t see weather or abrasion. For the interior, I would consider using a normal topcoat paint for the final finish, not a primer.
@KitplaneEnthusiast
@KitplaneEnthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
I thought it was pretty obvious that when I said it was smooth I was referring to no orange peel, but I am learning that I really need to spend a lot more time explaining things perfectly clearly in my videos! If you want to watch the rest of video sometime I did say that I was painting the interior green so I have no intention of using the primer as a topcoat. FYI the inside and the outside will be the Olive Drab color. That will go very nicely with the brown leather seats!

@@KitplaneEnthusiast Are you thinning the primer or shooting it straight from the can? I am using the Stewart Systems waterborne product and while they say it can be shot straight from the can, they say it works best thinned about 10% or 21 seconds in the Ford #4 viscosity cup. I tried both ways just for grins and when I spray the primer straight from the can, it leaves a surface that is quite rough to the touch, sort of like 800 grit sandpaper. When I thin it to 21 seconds or so (I think it runs 18 or so before thinning), it not only sprays better, but dries to a fairly smooth surface as though it was already lightly sanded. Probably like a 200 grit or so sandpaper feel. I am using a Devilbiss SRi Pro gun and it works great for the smaller parts. I will buy a larger gun to spray the exterior finish, probably the Devilbiss Finishline gun that Stewart sells, but I may anti up or the Devilbiss Pro full-size gun.

To install valve stems easily you pushing them in with a "T" handled allen wrench instead of pulling them in. To install the o-ring you stretch the o-ring over the outer half, over the valve stem. The valve stem will hold it into place while you bolt the halves together then simply flip it back over the valve stem and it will roll down into place.

An old painter once taught me to always try to use both stages of the trigger on your paint gun. The first detent will only flow air while squeezing the trigger all the way allows paint to mix with the air. What happens sometimes is your nozzle will get dry paint built up on it and it tends to end up on the job. Took me a bit to master it, but you wanna keep that air flowing as much as possible to keep that build up from happening. If you watch a really good painter (of which I am not😂) that air never stops coming threw the gun even at the end of there passes. It never hurts to periodically stop and do a quick cleaning of the nozzle and tip if you are spraying a lot of material. The project looks good your cruiser is really nice to. I’m chomping at the bit to get going more on my 750 stol. Maybe I will see the blue angel zenith flying overhead sometime I’m just west of Lansing. Would love to see it in person.

I’m curious about your choice to use SPI primer over a more traditional aircraft primer like Akzo(other than cost)? I like the finish better, is it a heavier primer?
@KitplaneEnthusiast
@KitplaneEnthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
Before I painted my Cruzer me and a friend did some testing with the SPI epoxy primer and it proved to adhere very well to the aluminum, and once cured was extremely durable. I'm sure it's not any 'better' and something like Akzo, but it's certainly no worse and probably cheaper!

Ohh yeah , I have been struggling with the sliding seat option decision , you keep changing my mind! Do you think it would be a huge hassle to install them at a later time if you change your mind? Thanks again!
@KitplaneEnthusiast
@KitplaneEnthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
It looks to me that they could added anytime. On the Super Duty there’s no additional structure that needs to be installed to accommodate the sliding seats. I do believe however that the structure is different on the Cruzer and the STOL for the sliding seats. I believe there’s another bulkhead that has to be installed. Best to verify with Zenith.

Soapy water is at best a marginal tire lube. Try some real tire lube next time. It makes a huge difference, however, it is also good to have the proper pulling tool for the valve stems and the tool doesn’t cost all that much. However, in a pinch, you can use a metal valve cap and then pull on it with vise grips. Just don’t screw the grips too hard or you will crush the valve cap and thus valve stem.

Also, being familiar with tire repairs is quite useful when you ride motorcycles and fly airplanes to the types of places I like to go: My wife and I rode our motorcycle from PA to AK coming up on two years ago. Had planned to ride to Newfoundland last year but the covid craziness stopped that and probably will stop it this year as well given the fear induced by our governments.
