It's kinda backwards because the sample you start with is a heavily compressed one. If you use "flattened out" sample like that one you don't really need to compress them and could work with an EQ or layering to get the punch effect you went for. To get a compressor to do more for you pick a sample with a sharp transient and then follow this or any other compression techniques.

thx for this one, this full threshold tips is the Best way to ear how Sounds this or that Comp. Here in my work flow i grouped 2 Comp in a ableton rack, the first one is called TRANSIENT , with fast attack and fast release settings calibrated from 0,1 to 50ms for the attack and for release to 500ms as max value. The second Comp called BODY calibrated from 50 ms to max for the attack and from 100 ms to max for the release... Each Comp with make up gain swiched off are linked to 4 macros controlling threshold, ratio, attack & release ( and the rack is also the simplest way to calibrate each compressor)... This double Comp rack is set by default on my audio track, that way i have Quick access to lower the attack or the body of a track, in the case i need a more general settings like a gentle glue setting, i just switch on one Comp depending on what the source or group of tracks to be glued needs. Thx

Zen world, I produce future bass. I understand compression but am confused what not to compress. I’m compressing vocals, my synths and my saws for the drop, the kick. But do I need to compress my piano from keyscape or my guitars?? What about sub??
@grindabrasion70136 жыл бұрын
This is a very useful Tutorial that sheds some light on how compression can be used. However, compression isn't just volume automation/shaping. It is in fact compressing the sound above the threshold (hence the Ratio). Always keep in mind that a high Ratio will crush the peaks and not just reduce them in volume.
@epidote60206 жыл бұрын
I don't get how that's not still volume automation. Crushing a sound still takes a change in volume. Both up and down. And the ratio is to lower all peaks volume while keeping the ratio of the volume between each peak the same. And of course to much ratio will make it "crushed" cuz now all the peaks will be the same volume. (No ratio of loudness). But it's still just changing the volume
@grindabrasion70136 жыл бұрын
Hey Epidote, you do make a good point however the compression is only acting (mostly) above the threshold. This means that everything below the threshold will remain the same (at the same volume). Another thing is I believe if for example you have a ratio of 2 then for every 1db it will compress it into half (0.5db). So again there is a bit more than just volume automation going on here. There are some really good tutorials online that will explain this way better than me.
@epidote60206 жыл бұрын
yes I understand that. That's the definition of a threshold pretty much, and the ratio is the space between the threshold and the max peak, and a higher ratio lowers the distance, ultimately crushing the sound. The way I see compression is like mixing a songs faders to be the right volume, but instead of multiple tracks its mixing the wave form together. While it's true that it changes the way the waveform looks when you add compression, its also true that changing the volume of each track in a song will change the waveform of the master track. so compression is like an algorithmic may of mixing a sound wave. Still just volume automation in my viewpoint. I'm sure professional audio engineers might disagree with me, but its probably more of like "if a tree falls and you weren't close enough to hear it, did it make a sound?" kind of a debate.
@grindabrasion70136 жыл бұрын
Volume modification within the sound itself. What a cool way to think of compression Haha! :D

Great Video! THX! What do you think about "Slate Digital" plugins ?
@branchyapple6 жыл бұрын
To know how compressor works. 1. Download Flstudio 2. Open up the limiter plugin and hit the "comp" (so the limiter isnt enabled) 3. You visually see how it works. You see the waveform from the signals and then the lines from, threshold and ratio (and knee) 4. You will now understand what a compress does by seeing it signal visually :-)
