I'd like to let the lovers of Z know a little bit more of this magnificent mare. I work on the farm and have gotten to know Z and her baby who I nicknamed Monkey Meat. Z is a incredibly smart horse that has a very sweet but reserved attitude. However, on the muscle, before she got pregnant, I don't believe I've held a more powerful horse than her at the end of a shank--stallion or mare. And I have held hundreds. She does have a sweet tooth from hell and loves the Pastures natural oat cookies. Monkey Meat on the other hand is very affectionate and loves being scratched and follows me around as we play for a few minutes. You can scratch her anywhere and she loves it while Z's favorite spot is on her butt by the tail root. The lady speaking is Jen and she doesn't get enough credit for the birth of this baby. My personal opinion is that this baby probably wouldn't be born without Jen, her assistant Connor and the farm manager Todd. One helleva management team. I did tell the little rascal that Monkey Meat wouldn't be her real name, Mrs Moss would pick out something beautiful like Red Flame or something like that. Anyway, they are both happy and healthy horses.

I'm 81 years old and watched the greats thru the years, too numerous to mention here but I have a special place for her in my heart no doubt some would argue but in her only loss I think Mike was responsible, another 10 feet and she would have caught Blame. So good to see her doing well. For me, she stands beside Cigar, Dr. Fager, and Swaps which ghost-like linger in my memories.Thanks for the upload.
@Nicole-qc5dh4 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't think it was Mike, though I accept that a lot of others do. I was at that race. In my opinion, she was just too used to the poly track over at Santa Anita. Being a horse that makes her run from behind, she got plastered with mud in her face from the break, something she didn't have to deal with on a synthetic surface. She came back past the stands after that race a different color because she was absolutely covered head to toe in dirt, something she'd never experienced before. I don't think she liked it much and it shocked her a bit, she never really hit a comfortable stride through the first half or more of the race, you can really see how disconnected she is in the replay. She just wouldn't settle and wound up with too much ground to make up when she finally kicked into gear. Should Mike have gotten on her case sooner? I don't know, maybe he did. Being someone who rides myself, I know there are plenty of times I cue my horse and nobody on the ground would never know I'd done it, if she didn't respond. So he may well have asked and goten no response. I just think the dynamic way that she did finally kick in and close, made it so much easier to blame it on Mike. He knew that horse better than anyone, I really feel she was just bothered and didn't respond to him early enough. Of course, Mike not only took the blame from everyone else, he also blamed himself. He'd never blame the horse, especially given she was Zenyatta, the champion of people's hearts. He wouldn't cheapen her legacy by telling people she just didn't kick in as soon as she needed to. Doing this for as long as I have, I just don't think it was all down to Mike. I don't think the Sherrif's felt that way either, as they still give him plenty of mounts. Nonetheless, I'll never forget that day, the deafening roar of the crowd, the way my heart began to pound and soar as she finally started eating up the ground beneath her, and the broken hearted disappointed when she lost by so little. In my opinion, her one loss was her greatest win. That was the best race she ever ran, despite the fact that she lost. She was so far back that it looked impossible to come back from, which just made her that much greater when not only did she come back, she damn near won.❤
@fterrysmith67534 жыл бұрын
@@Nicole-qc5dh Thanks for the heart felt response - I do not ride so your insight helps me understand things a bit differently. @Nicole-qc5dh4 жыл бұрын
@@fterrysmith6753 Thank you for the warm wishes.❤ Yeah, I've just never bought the thought that a seasoned jockey like Mike would think that he could give up that much ground and come out victorious. He's a hall of fame jockey for a reason, they generally don't make those types of rookie mistakes. I could be wrong, the only one who knows for sure is Mike and he wouldn't have put that on her either way. I have to admit, I'm somewhat jealous of all the greats you have seen run. Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Alydar, John Henry, Ruffian, etc, etc, etc. I was born in 1977, so I missed out on a lot of them. I did get to meet Cigar at the Kentucky Horse Park long after his retirement. He was quite a character and knew he was a Champion, he was very proud. I wish you well, take care!

She has $2 win on this horse called Dakota Phone. Longest shot on the board. The book is silent as this Phone horse comes closing on the outside and wins the race from last. She’s going nuts and the book is dead silent. I was mortified. She cashed for $80 or $90, I don’t remember as I was tearing up tickets after studying the Form for 2 weeks. She liked the name....

I am always bemused that they have never bred Zenyatta to another very large horse. Candy Ride is only 16 hands while Zenyatta is 17 plus. It is amazing that her success came from her huge stride and they still won't select a large stud which will also pass on his huge stride to their foal. Why not Tiznow, Hard Spun , Quality Road, or Midnight Lute all at 16.3 or taller as the sire of the next one? Midnight Lute is the sire of Midnight Bizou one of the most consistent fillies or mares since Zenyatta and this would add Secretariat to the foal's pedigree. (Her foal by Tapit, Ziconic, also had Secretariat in his pedigree.) Midnight Bizou almost won the Saudi Derby, the world's richest race. Sure, it will take a bit longer for the offspring to mature but Zenyatta did not start until late November well into her third year and still became a Super Star.

@Kaydee8154 жыл бұрын
If you follow pedigree theory, American Pharoah is a poor "nick" with her. Justify has a good "nick" but he isn't the physical type they usually go to for her stallions. She is so large that they dont need a stallion who could create a larger foal.
@michellewhite3494 жыл бұрын
Kim Riser sometimes the “perfect nick” isn’t the best foal. I just happen to think either of those would produce a good cross with her. And I’m not someone who just thinks this on a whim. As is, she’s not produced any really stellar foals, so I don’t see that it would hurt.

Isn't her breeding more turf leaning? I'd like to see her bred to a turf sure, maybe a legendary miler, the stamina will come from her. Sometimes that type wins the derby too, but not lately. I followed her like a stalker almost I went to the Arkansas Derby when she beat the champion Ginger punch . it was my birthday I bet on horse races so I could take the money and go to California and see her race multiple times and I did meet great people and we had a chant going . Even mrs. Chenry was there! Yes the courageous intuitive amazing Penny Chenery. Then on the 19th race they gave a video to everyone who came showing all her races. This particular item is a treasure to me and when I get uninspired I put it on. I went to Breeders Cup and I also went to Churchill Downs on last race when she didn't start and 74000 people in the stands went completely silent and yet she still was nose-to-nose at the end. Her whole campaign was so well-managed. The Mosses cared about her and knew that this was some kind of miraculous occurrence in their lives and they were the perfect stewards along with John Sheriffs and of course Mike the inimitable. Day after last race at Churchill Mrs Moss had Mario bring her out for the fans and she came and signed our shirts and hats Etc. She wrote on mine live life the Zenyatta way. Zenyatta was sent with a mission that she more than fulfilled and her Legacy will last forever and her Legacy and Compasses so much more than just watching a beautiful animal run oh, she is a teacher So grateful when we get the pleasent occasional glimpses into her current life. Will never forget this joy in my lifetime. Look at them now, are they not the most beautiful creatures! If that's not the prettiest spunkiest baby just like her mama. Lovely to see!!! Am now counting the days when Zenny's half sis WINX has her first foal! Any day now, mid-September !!!! Winx ran against the boys all the time , different directions around the track, all distances....a miracle mare!! Nice that both Zenny and Winx both won the Vox Populi Award!

@@jessboyer7304 Zen's owners prefer to race older, so it doesn't matter how late they are born if you aren't looking for a 2/3 year old prospect. In 4yo+ races, January and June foals have very little difference in them success-wise.

@@jessboyer7304 she was in foal with a candy ride filly to be born in 2021, but she lost it. I know she wasn't bred for 2022, she probably won't be bred again.

She is getting older hope they just let her be a horse before it's to late. Breeding horses every year up into there 20's isn't good for the horse . Don't be greedy treat her nice she deserves it
