Okay I have a Zephyr story! I was 16 years old working at Grants Department store in Rochester, N.Y. at Southtown Plaza in the pet department! (1972) I was so into Thin Lizzy my assistant store manager Jerry knew I was a Hard Rocker! He gave me the Zephyr album and said take this home and listen to it! I was totally blown away! From that day on I have judged and compared every female vocalist to the magnificent vocals of Candy Givens!

Oh yes, it was Candy. I think this is the very best all time rock and roll harp playing ever, bar none, period. I get chills every time I hear it, too.

Thank you so much for posting this video with Candie Givens. The world is a lot less intresting place without her. When I saw her sing live she made me fall in love with her. Dont forget Ruby Starr, she gave her life to rock and roll also.

Candy was such a great singer. It's crazy that none of these strong female led bands don't cover her songs. I am 60 now and I remember going to see Zephyr every chance I could. Our band learned all their songs. We would climb on the roof of Tulagi's and hide in the heat and a/c room just to listen to the band. Later on I had the fortune of meeting Candy at a party ( I was the timpanist of the Boulder Philharmonic at the time ) and we had a very nice conversation about music and things. I was so sad to hear of her death. She was really starting to find her voice. She had such amazing vocal skills. I'm listening to the first Zephyr album now. Yes, I still have the original vynal I bought when it first came out.

On the album cover of Sunset Ride it's spelled "Candy". I saw them in a low-key setting in a bar in Telluride. At one point they took a break and were just hanging out at the bar and I was in too much of a funk to go up and speak to them - greatest regret of my life. Thank you so much for this post.

Eddie Turner on guitar. Played with Zephyr after Tommy left. Eddie also played with Otis Taylor. He is based out of Denver and has had his own band for years and recorded a number of cool albums....an awesome player and a nice guy. He still plays gigs. See him if you get a chance.

David Givens if you are still with us I am still so sad that she died and that the Heartbeat project just missed bringing Zephyr back to the stardom you deserved. Not for me but for you and Zephyr. Candy and Zephyr were a great talent. WE were bringing Zephyr back to life. Listening to our project and all of the other wonderful Zephyr music has reinforced the importance of what we tried to do together. Accept my apologies for whatever misunderstandings we had.Charles

No apologies necessary, Charles. I look at life as something to savor with all of its various twists and turns. This was a chapter that still has echoes today. Life is much too short to take a negative point of view. Hello to Mark.

If I did stop to say hello it would have been to say how deeply appreciative and profoundly moved I am at having encountered your music. By fluke, I acquired Sunset Ride via my father who was culling unwanted albums from his MOR-oriented radio station - literally a life-altering happenstance. Who plays harmonica on 'Moving Too Fast'? I get shivers EVERY time!

WOW! Brings back memories, this is cool to find - Thank You! I live here, and remember learning she passed back then .. rest in peace, Candie. I'm gonna be at the Neptune Festival this year, and Zephyr (along Firefall, Foghat, and others) are scheduled to play there. Cool.

After two decades Marc Lippit finally unearthed several first generation analogue audio cassettes 0f the entire heartbeat album. I just had them converted to MP3 files and will be posting the complete album online in the next few weeks. Also will be meeting with several LA FM stations that fit the Zephyr genre - though 35 years later to see if we can't get airtimes as well, we all owe it to Candy to put this work of musical art in its proper perspective. If I recall correctly, we --that is, Computer Image, Inc., based in Denver-- did some of the computer animation for the vids off this album. I specifically remember working on the Red Sneakers tune; myself and Phil Zimmerman worked on that vid, using Scanimate for the effects. I left CI in the mid 80s to attend CU, and I know Phil went elsewhere shortly afterward when CI was disassembled, but I somehow missed the news of M. Sleichter buying in to Lee's company. Neither here or there, we enjoyed working on the Red Sneakers vid and were heartily sorry at Candy's passing.

Yes. Computer Image (aka Dolphin Productions, NYC) had a tremendous amount of input in post. A truly great team on the cutting edge of computer graphics. Hi Charles. Sander

Let us get the details accurate. Zephyr's come back album HEARTBEAT - the last before Candy's terrible death - was conceived, financed, produced and promoted by Marc Lippitt and Charles Sleichter's independent Denver based label Red Sneakers Music. The video - which won a Silver Medal at the New York Film and Television and Billboards Video Music awards was one of the earliest examples of computer animation blue screened with live action and the first to be aired on VH1. The videos were created, storyboarded and directed by Charles Sleichter in collaboration with Zephyr. Animation was designed by Charles Sleichter and produced at and in collaboration with Emmy award winning Computer Image (Charles later became CEO and creative director of Computer Image/Kinetic Design Systems) and Shot and Edited at Telemation both in Denver. The album was recorded at the Cave in Boulder, Colorado and final editing under Sleichter's direction in Nashville, TN. It is old school but both the music and the videos stand the test of time and represent the very genesis of what we know as 3D computer animation today. I am still saddened by the events that terminated the near comeback success of Zephyr. Charles Sleichter and Marc Lippitt

Ah, details. Can't let this rest any longer. I was the one behind connecting with Computer Image Corp, a partner with Dolphin Productions in NYC at the top of 666 in NYC, a company I had experience with. CIC was a company that dealt almost exclusively with computer animated corporate logos when I approached them with this project. We pushed them and they rose to the cause. I'm a little (only a little) surprised that my name was not mentioned in your "accurate" details. I pushed for blue screen, I pushed for everything. It was your money but my ideas along with Candy and David. Candy and David connected with me to direct the video because I was a friend and was in television at KBDI. They thought I might know a thing or two and they trusted me. I delivered. You provided the money, we provided the product. You were involved, Chuck, but you were still learning. You are elevating yourself without giving credit where it is due. Having said that, I have no idea if you are still among the living. It's been a long time. Peace to you and your family.

Never heard this before. A very trippy old school psychedelic vibe swirling in the same pool with a modern ( for its time) aesthetic,that weirdly improbably works. This is screaming for a remastered release on cd. But the bonus disc needs to be the entire lp's tracks untouched as originally recorded. RIP Candy Givens. It seems you had finally found the best vehicle for your voice on Heartbeat. Not to say the other 3 Zephyr lps weren't also fantastic. I'd like to think Candy at least sits in once in awhile with Tommy's band in the clouds. Peace

Yep. I loved that bass, as ugly as it was, it played and sounded great. Some idiot stole it, but not before I got my money's worth out of it. I remember the sales pitch about how it was designed by an engineer who had designed Indy cars.

I had a hard time dealing with Robbie Chamberlain leaving the band. Bobby Birge could not play his way out of a paper bag. I saw Robbie a number of years later playing with Lannie Garret's band. We spoke for a few. He has some great chops. David Givens...if your still out there, maybe you could fill me in.

Changing from Robbie to Bobby changed the chemistry and we went down a different road - turned out it wasn't a good one. Robbie is a truly great drummer. Haven't seen him since '97. If you know how to find him, I'd like to know,

David Givens I never said Robbie isn't good. Bobby has better drive in his playing. The Live at Art's Bar CD is proof.
@dmgivens1
@dmgivens1 10 жыл бұрын
No. The proof is what I experienced. Robbie was more creative and had better technique. The reason we switched to Bobby was that Robbie didn't have enough "drive". Bobby is a great drummer, never said he wasn't. It was not a good choice for a variety of reasons having to do with chemistry.
