Another AMAZING song to react to by Greta Van Fleet. This one was TRULY an EPIC MASTERPIECE!!! The entire song felt absolutely AMAZING!!! I think I will have to react to an entire album of theirs. I haven't allowed myself to listen to anything by them yet. Due to how excited I am to react to it for you guys!
I was a bit buzzed while reacting to this tune. So, pardon that, please. I honestly want to watch it again, but have it be more of a review. I really LOVED this song.
GVF is playing near me this year. I will be there fo sho!!!

Jake (lead guitar) in an interview said he has absolutely studied Page. They have acknowledged that they been influenced by Zepp (among others, especially blues great) and are honored by the comparisons (although I think sometimes they are tired of it being the main topic of conversation…to the point where i think the Aerosmith comment was a joke). Jake has also said he picked up a guitar when he was very young and is largely self-taught. His dad wouldn’t let him get an electric guitar until he was proficient with the acoustic. Anyhow…I saw this song live this year and let me tell you, it’s one of my musical highlights…epic is the right word.

Some info on Josh: Josh's influences are female singers like, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, blues singers, not really Robert Plant as a lot of folks think. Josh's mom, Karen Kiszka, said that Josh does have bouts w/ anxiety & ADHD. In the earlier videos, Josh stands very closed in, arms very close to his body. Now, he doesn't do that, he has a vocal coach that helps him sing properly. These kids grew up together in small town of 5,000 people. They also have a sister & Danny (drummer) has a sister too! The identical twins are 27 & Sam & Danny are about 24 years. Cheers!

I too got to see them last November - Weight Of Dreams live is something special. I’ve seen The Eagles twice, Def Lep, Journey, Van Halen - and I get they’re all much much past their prime - but as far as sheer ability to make epic music…..best musical experience of my life. I’d recommend consuming a bit of the devils lettuce beforehand as well if that’s you’re style. Incredible performance!

They made the comment about sounding like Aerosmith one time during an interview and it’s been repeated. The majority of us fans know the early stuff sound like Led Zeppelin and we don’t give a F! I believe Jake studied Jimmy page for years. If they had come out and said they were influenced by Zep people would’ve crucified them early in their career. These guys are the real deal.

I've watched quite a lot of interviews where they mentioned a wide spectrum of influences, but never Aerosmith. I don't know where that came from. The only person I've actually heard say that was Plant himself...and I think it was in jest. Jake often talks about Hendrix, Clapton, Elmore James...when asked (by Nikki Sixx) about Page, Jake admitted he was a "significant influence (who) took blues in an interestion direction". They never denied Zeppelin as an influence, but it's also true that they almost never mention it unless they are openly asked about it. I'm not sure how I feel about them saying that it was never really intentional. When you hear and watch their very early stuff, it's really hard to believe. :D Great review. Thank you! People are tired of the comparisons not because they can't/don't hear it, but mainly because of how it's presented: shitty cover band, a joke, rip-offs, Zep Lite, etc... Live versions of Weight of Dreams are 20 minutes long. Even live versions of Highway Tune are 20 minutes long, full of jamming. Josh Kiszka can hit C6 live with ease and he's 27 - past the age when Plant was already struggling.

Great comment. I feel like I have see. Every interview they ever did and not once have I heard Aerosmith being a influence. And your right, the comparison always comes with a negative connotation. They never said they weren’t influenced, they have said it wasn’t the ONLY influence. They just wanted to bring the same sounds to a more contemporary realm. Love this band. Haven’t been this excited about a band since the 70’s!

I'm pretty sure that the Aerosmith reference was due to the constant comparisons to LZ, and was said in jest. Jake studied Page pretty intensely along with many of the blues legends that Page learned from. When they were teenagers they played Zeppelin, Cream, Sabbath, etc in biker bars. I think their early stuff is more Zep than recent songs.

I think the reason why they decided not to voice that Led Zeppelin was an influence is because all the early hate they got for it and because they obviously didn’t want to be known as a rip off or cover band. They want to be as original as possible while still having those influences shine through. I mean, critics and people just tore into them for this, everything from Josh’s voice to the music was criticized simply because of that. They have evolved and grown to develop a slightly more original sound and want people to recognize that they are creative and talented people that are simply bringing back a long forgotten style of music back into the mainstream. I agree that fans can get so blinded by feeling compelled to respond to hateful people that as soon as LZ is mentioned they automatically assume that person is going to criticize. Sorry, it’s a knee jerk reaction for a lot of us. I’ve been guilty of this too, I just really want to see these guys succeed. I’m glad you are enjoying them and don’t hold that early influence against them. Robert Plant actually praised them at one point and basically said that he was honored to be an influence of theirs. No one is debating that their main influence is LZ, but they do have other influences. They just decided to focus the conversations on those other bands so they didn’t have to deal with people going on about Led Zeppelin. They have also stated that one of their early influences was The Doors as well. They had a bit of a blues phase too, I think one of their fathers is in a blues band so that’s probably also where that comes from. I think it’s very inaccurate for people to assume that LZ was their only strong influence.

Nice reaction and spot on. They are obviously influenced by Zeppelin - from Josh's early hand gestures and poses to Jake's playing and stage outfits to on stage mannerisms. WHO CARES?! There are a ton of videos on KZbin showing them performing Zeppelin in clubs from 2014-2017 ('Whole Lotta Love', including Scott McKenzie's 'San Francisco'/'Dazed'/In 2014 'I Wanna Be Her Man', which is an outtake from a Led Zeppelin bootleg from the Zeppelin III rehearsals...) It's okay folks and I am a huge Zeppelin fan. Zeppelin broke up in 1980 - it's been over 40 years so get over it. You can also hear some RUSH mixed with Black Crowes in some songs with a sprinkle of Pink Floyd and Yes as well. It's no big deal. Enjoy it and embrace it. I just think they are so sick and tired of the comparisons directly due to Josh's vocals from Highway Tune, which is what launched them into the spotlight.

I looked at a ticket stub yesterday and it was 49 years ago, yesterday, that I saw Led Zeppelin for the Physical Graffiti tour. A lot of Physical Graffiti and Houses of The Holy music was played that night. I saw Zeppelin again, I think it was the Presence album tour. When I hear these guys, all I can think is, if Led Zeppelin were a band today, this is what they would sound like. So many Jimmy Page licks in his playing, so many John Bonham drum fills, it's just fun to catch those things while listening. Listen to their mellow songs with acoustic guitar and the organ...it's pure Zeppelin...revisited in a fresh new way.

They never said that they were influenced by Aerosmith, that apocryphal idea that's become associated with them has no basis in any actual interview. Early on they were tight-lipped when it came to any of their influences, but often cited the same blues guys that inspired Zeppelin, as well as the great guitarists of the 60s and 70s, Page included. At this point they're very open in talking about their influences and in every interview I read, they almost never even mention Aerosmith, but what they do mention, is Led Zeppelin. And a lot more.

I think the reason why some of thu fanbase reacts negatively to the Zeppelin comparisons is because a lot of critics like to draw those comparisons in order to claim that the band is unoriginal/creatively bankrupt/riding Zeppelin's coattails/no better than a Zeppelin cover band, et cetera. Most of the fans recognize that quite a few of their songs definitely do have a strong Zeppelin influence, but when we hear people try to use that as a criticism it rings hollow because anyone who's listened to their back catalog can hear other inspirations as well. _Brave New World_ and _Edge of Darkness_ have a strong Rush vibe to them, while _Black Smoke Rising_ and _Heat Above_ sound very original and are hard to pin down. So when we heard someone bring out the Zeppelin comparison, we sort of brace ourselves for yet another bad take about how this band has nothing original to add to the conversation from someone whose only heard maybe 4 of their songs.

@@shotgunndunn You know, as someone who spent my high school and college years listening to every Zeppelin album on repeat and praying for a classic rock revival (not to mention all the time i spent obsessively practicing the drums trying to sound just like John Bonham), i never quite understood why sounding like Zeppelin was considered a bad thing.

I was actually high when I did the entire From the Fires album. It was great until I realized that I’m supposed to be speaking my thoughts on things. I smoked because I feel music even deeper. But I forgot about the speaking part. That’s when I learned to edit! It was a great learning experience!

As a LZ fan and GVF fan I must say who cares that they sounds like them? It should be seen as a compliment as if. One thing a lot of times LZ fans forget, is that Page also studied jazz guitarists and took a lot from blues, it is not like his style evolved from nothing. LZ is also not as innocent with taking some from other artists so here it is a draw. The guitarist of Greta John said in the new interview that obviously Page was influence but not only him, also a lot of other musicians from that era, probably some the same that created Jimmy as we know him today. There is nothing wrong with taking influences, I am happy that boys can finally admit it, but we can’t also say that everything they are coming up with is inspired by Led Zeppelin bc that would be like telling they are doing copy and paste. Actually I thing they are taking similar path that LZ and starting from influences to finding their own sound, look for Rush, they were also hated at the begging and now they are legends. Also I am happy that Greta brings me back that nostalgia, especially that nowadays there is a new approach of playing that is popular, something like Polyphia.

Hi, You spelled Weight wrong on your title slide. I, dispute you, just becoz you have a favorite band, doesn't mean that it's an "undisputed fact" that Led Zep is the best ever, and ever, ... I LOVE Led Zeppelin, I had a dog named LZ, I had a dog named Karac (after Robert Plant's son who passed very young 5 yrs. I think). I dressed in black for two weeks while mourning for Bonzo. You are providing your reaction, your subjective opinion. It doesn't matter whether I love Led Zep more than GVF or vice versa. I wonder, if you're so well informed, and you sit in your chair with drum set behind you? What are you doing? Do you write your own songs, do you play multiple musical instruments expertly? Do you have perfect pitch? Did/do you have someone who is loving and supportive of you? I hope so. I'm not here to advocate for or against anyone. I don't need to, it's not necessary. Preferences exist. But before you begin to criticize others, maybe take a look in the mirror first - reflect, own your own shortcomings. No one is perfect. This post is meant w/ good intentions. Thanks

Thanks for pointing out the typo. I noticed that the other day. I've been meaning to change that. The comment I made about the 'undisputed fact' was not stating that Zeppelin was the greatest band in the world, but that GVF is very clearly influenced by Zeppelin. (Which at the time I had heard some misinformation saying that GVF claimed to be more influenced by Aerosmith... seems that this was hearsay...) However, even IF I did say that it is an undisputed fact that Zeppelin is the greatest band in the world... I'm allowed to say that. Because I can. So can you. So can anyone else on this planet. For the time being, we still have free speech. At lease here in the U.S., we do. What did I say exactly that upset you so much?? (probably what you mistook as me saying that Zeppelin is the greatest band in the world and that it is an undisputed fact. You mashed up two different things that I said.) Would you prefer that I move my drums so that they are beside me. As opposed to behind me? ;) Here's what I'm doing. For starters, I've rebooted my KZbin channel. I decided to break the ice by doing reactions as I had been putting this off for over a year. My ultimate goal is creating more of my own music. My new studio is almost complete. I've been building it myself since the day after Christmas. Once I move down there I will begin to release some of my music. As well as write more. I also plan to do music gear demos/reviews. Simply because I think it sounds fun. I do play guitar, drums, and bass. Though I wouldn't say expertly. I'm mostly a guitar player. Been playing for almost 30 years. I am quite rusty though. I started playing the drums last year at age 40. I do not have perfect pitch. Why, is that now a requirement for me in order to be on youtube? I do have relative pitch. Will that suffice? Yes, I do have someone that is loving and supportive of me. What is your point? Did you even have one? Interesting that you seem quite offended after watching my reaction which was almost entirely positive feedback. Hence the EPIC MASTERPIECE in my title. Apparently you missed the part where I called MYSELF out for sounding like MY own influences. I wear my influences on my sleeve as well. If you hear my music you will surely hear MetallicA, PanterA, Black Sabbath, and MegadetH. I'll be sure to run all future posts by you to make sure that you approve. What exactly are you doing? Aside from spreading your 'good intentions', of course.

@@shotgunndunn Hey, thanks for your reply! Right now, I'm dealing with a lot of medical issues. Right now, I teach literacy to 1st-5th graders in the refugee & Asylum seekers population here. I was a practicing Registered Behavior Therapist - I worked with kiddos who are on the spectrum. Now, I teach reading. Before that though, I traveled/toured the country as the 3rd woman in the United States to be approved by the Patsy Cline estate to portray her on stage. I am a retired professional singer and actress. I retired from show biz in 2004, to start university at age 40. It wasn't my offended, I was just using free speech. Sometimes becoz of the damage to my deep white matter (brain) I sometimes have to say/type words quickly, or I'll forget. I'm a really nice person, I'm sorry if what I wanted to say, didn't come out the way I intended. Sometimes that happens. As a former professional singer & actress, I know what it's like to be critiqued by theatre critics, I've only ever gotten one negative review, but it stung. But, there's nothing I can do about that. Ya know?

Its ok if your jealous a little bub. There will never be another led Zeppelin we get it. They inspired and continue to inspire but there comes a point where when you say it for the hundreth time and you say it over and over on every song. You start to take away from what they have accomplished.. also they state they were influenced by zeppelin and many other bands but they wanted to be recognized for greta van fleet not a cover band which they are not and which is why you continuously stating they sound like them is overplayed there on there 3rd studio album. There a grammy award winning band stop with the zepplin shit let ppl enjoy the music and let them have there much deseved time in the spotlight.
