Thank you all for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. To address the grinding sound you hear in this video, I would ask you take a couple things into account: 1) As several of you have correctly suspected, we are using a new set of SSP multipurpose burrs which are generally regarded as being fairly "screechy" until they are fully seasoned. 2) This is recorded with a phone camera/microphone that highly accentuates audio in that frequency range. To demonstrate this, listen to the sounds of the scoop going into the beans and dropping them into the dosing cup and think about how amplified those sounds are compared to your typical workflow. We will be filming & posting some workflows with professional, full-spectrum recording equipment to give you a more accurate representation of the sound, but so many of you have been asking for a workflow video we wanted to get a basic one out as quickly as possible. Thanks for all the questions and please keep 'em coming! For longer form questions, email us at info@zerno.co.

or could you try measure it in decibel with some sound measurement app to provide us a rough ballpark of the issue?

With your second batch coming out soon, do you think you can get it recorded with a better quality mic? I’m interested for sure but the sound is less than ideal.

Yes this is true, the SSP MP / Unimodal burrs are great, but they are higher pitch / screechy, I thought I might have gotten used to them (or have gone more deaf :p ) but maybe they do get better after some seasoning!

Now I go read the comments and I see I probably jumped the gun like a lot of other people. I would like to know the decibel range that is expected even if you can't accurately convey the frequency that is to be expected, (lower frequencies hopefully, anyway). Always happy to see locally-made products. I'm from across Lake Michigan from you guys and just learned about you!

If I had to guess, that unit is fitted with SSP Multipurpose burrs. They have a higher pitch sound and tend to scream, even more so when no fully seasoned. It's hard to judge the sound based on a video, even more so when filmed with a phone. You'll find videos of the P64/MP's that sound very similar even though the Lagom is considered one of the best sounding grinder out there.

Hard to tell on video because often noises get amplified or damped by the mic, but the P64 with those burrs is also screechy, it does have a super quiet motor which I really like and Zerno sounds similar in that regard (you can barely hear the motor running before adding the coffee). I think with the Auger though it's probably a bit louder, but hard to tell until I have both on my table :D

Great and simple design style! Feels like things “are in the right place” for a good workflow. Any reason your feeding in the beans slowly?

That grinding sound... is not great.

That espresso looked amazing ! I would suggest the Weber blind shaker, for better prepare the puck. I think it fits in your setup. I totally agree and understand the comments on the noise of the grinder, but I personally don't mind. Grinders with prebreakers - augers or how they called, I love them. If I consider two grinders, that is the Zerno and the Wug2 PS. Which burr-set out of the 5 that Zerno offers, would you suggest for Espresso only use ?

Besides from that sound this looks like a winner. I wonder if the vertical burr arrangement will wear off the fixed burr unevenly. But in a home setup, that's probably not a problem. Do you have particle size analysis available yet?
@zerno.grinder
@zerno.grinder 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joachim! We're waiting to receive a couple of the final production components (this unit still has a couple prototype pieces in it) before we measure the official particle size analysis. We will be sending out samples to a third-party lab for laser diffraction particle size analysis to provide our backers with industry-standard metrics.

This grinder seems very interesting but it does not offer enough to be worth upgrading from my DF64. Are there plans to add in RPM adjustment in future models? Ideally down to 200 with the speed written on the dial or some sort of LCD display(not ideal). With that, at or below the P64 this would be perfect and worth the investment

The thing I noticed was you had to use your hand as a funnel because the hopper is too skinny? Perhaps it should be wider? But overall a really great looking grinder!

Looks like a nice unit that could fall in between the price point of the DF64 and Lagom P64. It would be nice to hear it running side by side with the P64 for comparison!

any plans to reduce that high pitch screech from the grinder during operation? not exactly a pleasant sound in the morning, or any time of the day
@davidlogan2682

The pitch sounds like ssp mp burrs. That's approximately how they sound in other grinders.
@WhiskyTanuki
@WhiskyTanuki 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidlogan2682 in the P64 it sounds pretty tame, and even if you use the SSP MP in fellow Ode it’s not as high pitch screech as this irl
@Covenant-R
@Covenant-R 2 жыл бұрын
Ode with MP is still fairly screechy, but Ode runs at 1300 rpm and IIRC Zerno runs a bit slower, 6-700 something I think, so that might be a difference. Also hard to judge exactly when it's a phone recording, since depending on phone, distance, etc it might sound worse or even better then in person.

I hope you guys are figuring out the Screech this makes while grinding before you release it cuz that is more than just off-putting. I am willing to admit I'm sensitive to high pitched sounds but I think that would be unpleasant to pretty much anybody!

The screeching sound is borderline disturbing, sorry guys. There are ways to dampen the sound even when using high pitch SSP burrs, I'd recommend going back to drawing board and spending little more time.on that particular aspect. Cheers.
