I'm finishing the dry weld "zero atmosphere" damascus billet I started yesterday, plus forging a couple kitchen blades.

Seeing the title gave me visions of spacesuited blacksmiths hammering away in space, lol.

Last week I inherited a William Forester coach maker anvil weight markings 0-3-16, so...100lbs? A round pan forge with a champion hand crank blower. Was using an old (1913?) Railroad track I welded a plate on for an anvil, huge difference in the rebound. Does the railroad track have any rebound? The coach maker anvil bout made my hammer bounce out my hand when I was trying to forge a leaf. The round pan forge is about 16" across and the whole pan ends up lit, so... going to save it for larger jobs and stick with the brake drum/rotor forge I built, won't burn up all my fuel in a couple of hours that way. Might adapt the brake forge to fit the hand crank blower, instead of the 12v scooter motor running a 2" blower from a computer power supply it has now.

Nice, sounds like a great upgrade! Yeah, having that mass directly under your work piece like an actual anvil makes a big difference

I completely agree. I’m not a fan of the high layer Damascus. I’ve made several 33 layer knifes and they turned out great. The layers really stand out more with a lower count. I been wanting to try a lower count mosaic.

Why do you use the round dies in the press? do they do a better job at drawing out material than the flat dies do? How many hours does it take you to make knives your making now? Enjoyed the video...stay safe!

Thanks Steve, that's correct, the round dies are much more efficient due to the surface/force distribution. Time into the knives, on a Damascus knife including making the Damascus, roughly 10-20 hrs depending on size.
