the modular battery is very useful for ppl who live in apartments and don't have their own garage. pop out the battery n take it home to charge. also when you take out the battery, its difficult to steal it

it would be great if there were battery stations everywhere and you could simply change the battery for a charge one then leave the discharged one so latter anyone could pick it up in the same way

This is the worst idea ever! Batteries only last for a set amount of time until they start to degrade. Some factors such as heat, fast charging, fast discharging, remaining at high and low state of charge can and will speed up this process. Most owners try to treat batteries properly in orden to extend battery cycles. However if you won’t see that battery again, why caring? And every battery will start degrading faster: less range. Moreover, that is like not owning a battery but relying on a network of batteries that will be even less widespread than charging stations for electric vehicles (not only you will have to find a place where there are batteries, supposing they are charged when you arrive there, but you will also have to find one of your same brand and model)

What about lowlifes who would purposely exchange only their old, piece of crap batteries for better ones. And maybe even do it just to sell the better ones for a profit? Maybe if every station had a qualified person to assess each exchange, but that would probably be too costly.

Standardize the batteries, then rent them out to consumers who can change them at a gas station. Problem solved. Except that good luck getting manufacturers to agree on standards. It needs political pressure, which is why I reckon it'll happen in Europe before the US.

Late reply, but there is a problem. People that pay for higher-end models, with heftier price tags, expect higher performance. In the electric side majority of performance comes from the battery, contrary to gas-powered bikes where gasoline has a much less potent effect on performance. Then, people who want a more affordable bike likewise will have to get more "affordable" performance. Which comes at the price of cheaper cells. It's all about the money. You pay less, you get less. Just the way it goes. Tesla tried this years back with interchangeable battery packs that could be swapped pre-charged at gas stations, but the idea was buried because of the hassle it would provide with different models and across the board standardized performance.

When it comes to electric vehicles, people need to stop thinking about them like a gas one. You don’t need charging stations like you do gas stations, you charge at home and charge at home again. Only if you go across the country do you have to worry about that.

I saw a "5 year" sticker on the side of the battery. Hopefully, the battery last longer than this. My thinking is that the bike will pay for itself just by not using gasoline as I have a 27 mile commute to work and I am driving a 2004 Tacoma at 23 mpg. Putting a few dollars aside each month to buy a new battery in 6 - 10 years would negate the sting of getting a replacement battery.

Zero claims the batteries last from 100,000 to 250,000 miles before dropping below 80% range. I have spoken to people that have these bikes and from what I understand that is actually more or less accurate. But because it is a claim made by a company that wants to sell you the bikes let's assume it is the lower value. 27 mile commute, 5 days a week, 260 days a year for 7,020 miles ridden a year. In 5 years you'd have ridden 35,000 miles. Assuming you don't ride any extra miles you'd need to ride another 10 years before the battery falls under 80%. It is important to note though that there are things you can do besides riding that lower the total life-span of the battery. Heat, fast charging, draining the battery to 0 and charging the bike while it is fully charged. These things happen pretty regularly so I would expect the life-span to be effected negatively enough to not get that close to 15 year potential lifespan. It is still kind of expensive even if you started putting aside money now. 3,000ish dollars a battery for 10 years is 25 dollars a month.

The cost of these bikes plus the poor highway range is why none of the Japanese companies are making electric bikes, but are developing them. The gas bike equivalents are still better bikes, and thousands less expensive. Even for people with a short commute, a 650 twin uses little gas, so what's the point? Modular batteries are a good idea but when the batteries cost 3,000 dollars on top of a 10k+ dollar bike it stops making sense. And I am not a petroleum junkie. I like EVs but that just plain sucks. Zero is a company and has to make profit but parts like a battery should be an aspect of their company where servicing the customer to keep them loyal to their products is more important than milking them. Batteries are expensive but 3,000 dollars are very massive margins. It would seem Zero is doing the same strategy that Tesla and Apple are doing. Trapping you in an ecosystem and milking you.

Epsilon i calculated it, i can get a bike, convert it to 140hp diesel at a professional shop, and run it at swedish fuel-prices for 6 years before the total cost difference is in favor of the zero fx, even assuming no repairs or maintenance for the zero while the diesel had a top blown (yes, that diesel bike actually exists and it just hit $11k in total cost since its first drive in 2009)

"Batteries are expensive" - this is ridiculous, nothing can apologize the price of that motorcycle. One kWh of li-ion battery cells costs about 250$, whole 1kWh battery pack is about 400$, so 7.2kWh price should be no more than 3000$ (numbers are from automotive industry, i.e. Tesla). So why this machine cost so much? Simple air cooled synchronous motor with belt drive, no clutch, no transmission, no fuel system, no starter, every other component is same as in classic bike. Can anyone explain me why it costs 10.500$ without VAT, which is more than double of gas motorcycle with equal spec?

You talk like every product should be priced by the sum of it's parts which is stupid. Are the sum of parts going to pay for research, testing, engineers, bootstrap, transport, waste, management, marketing, advertisements, partnerships, PROFIT and all that?
@ferosofranek8817
@ferosofranek8817 2 жыл бұрын
@@RomeoMihalcea main idea of my comment was that batteries are not so expensive. This bike is expensive because company produce this bike in very small quantities and sell it with huge price margin - they can afford it, because they always find some rich people which are willing to buy one. Electric propulsion is very simple in comparison with some classic internal combustion engine setup (with clutch, gearbox, starter, fuel system, lubrication, water cooling...) - there are huge price savings. Only batteries are pulling price up. Research, testing, engineers, marketing.... all of this is covered also in price of gas motorcycles, and they are considerably cheaper.

@@ferosofranek8817 nothing changed in the ICE department for decades. They are tweaking terms here and there to justify some upgrades but everything stays the same since long before I was born. Price = investment + profit. Your investment must be recuperated from sales. Low sales volume dictate higher prices otherwise you go bankrupt. Gas moto have higher sales volumes and investment can be recuperated even though price per unit (ppu) is lower.

@@RomeoMihalcea your statement "nothing changed in the ICE department for decades" is completely absurd. Automotive industry provides work for hundreds of thousands scientists and engineers. Everywhere, in any kind of human activity runs never ending process of research and development. If you compare ICEs from 1990 and from 2020 - the differences are obvious (in every aspect). And we pay those engineers in prices of new cars. As I said before, Zero company doesn't care about price of their motorcycles, because they always sell some. There is no push to reduce price, almost no competition and many rich people and electro-enthusiast willing to buy.

@@ferosofranek8817 0 difference from 90' to 2020. Amg still puts the same engine on cars for example, same engine since the 90's. ICE has reached its peek long time ago buddy. Don't babble about the automotive industry because the same industry is using electric for a long time (take tesla or other EVs deployed successfully). We're talking ICE here and ICE has stalled decades ago. I will say this again maybe you missed it: same engines since the 90s, I would go as back as the 70s and find an engine that works better than engines placed on cars today! That's 50+ years of nothing. That's how much bs surrounds the ICE. Sure the technology of other parts of the car has changed but the same tech is being carried to electric now.

Literally the dumbest idea. Making an offroad electric bike. "Lets go off road riding". After around 30mins "dude my battery is dead, its ok I can charge it in this wild wilderness. Umm, where on these trees do I plug my cable to?". Yes you can just use it for city and urban use, but then why buy this type of bike in the first place? Might as well get a proper road bike. With that stupid full charge range, I won't even be able to get home from work without charging the bike somewhere during work. And I doubt there are free charging station anywhere. You are probably going to spend more charging it daily then just filling up with petrol. And also, how long will the battery last with daily full discharge and charging? I have no problem with EVs, but at least be realistic rather then just making one just for the sake of making one. Also with that stupid pricing.

Standardize the batteries, then rent them out to consumers who can change them at a gas station. Problem solved. Except that good luck getting manufacturers to agree on standards. It needs political pressure, which is why I reckon it'll happen in Europe before the US.
