Excellent point about the essential oils. And thanks for the tip about the beeswax wraps - I’ve contemplated buying them, but wasn’t sure I’d like them. Back in the “old days”, in addition to glass “refrigerator dishes” people would store food in a bowl with a plate over the top. By accident I discovered that my Corelle plates in various sizes are perfect fits with my Pyrex bowls - like they were made for each other 😉

One of my regrets is not sticking to a good tooth paste. I switched to a eco friendly tooth paste two years ago (that costs way more) and I bought it from a store I trusted. My dentist said I had to throw it away basically and buy something that would repair my teeth since I had been using something that ultimately damaged my teeth and didn't protect my teeth enamel.

I had similar issues. I found Bite toothpaste. It doesn’t use fluoride, but a fluoride alternative that is used in other countries and is just as effective. I’m so happy with the eco-friendliness of Bite and how it is still awesome for my teeth.

I hated the last swabs, too. I wanted something to get water out of my ears after a shower, and, like you said, it falls flat. I actually use the flat end of a double-sided blemish extractor I already had to scrape wax and water out of my ears. It works really well! Just have to be really careful haha.

I've had a last swab-type product for a year now, but I use it differently. Before I put the swab in my ear I wrap it in muslin cloth, and that goes in and dries my ear inside. For make-up retouches - same process, I just dip it in micellar water and gently dab/wipe smears away like that. Once a week the cloths go in the wash and that's it.

Best sunscreens ever - Ringana!!! I'm in love with them - no white face. And about my ears - I just gently wash them when I take a shower and dry them carefully with a towel. You just need to let them get used to this old unexpensive method. Love from Italy, dear Rebecca!

I have hyperhidrosis so I have excess sweat in places most people don’t, and I use Native currently. It really does seem to help with my sweat in uncomfortable places like my groin area and my hands and feet. But I want to try some other kinds just to see because there is more out there now than there used to be. I’m not currently low waste or minimalist, but I am on my journey and I’m trying. I tried essential oils as a remedy for anxiety, vertigo, and headaches and it does help with that. I’m going to use what I have for now and try a fresh herb alternative when I’m done with them.

I didn't like silicone/ plastic reusable cotton swabs either, and I bought a stainless steel ear cleaner. And I love it, it's like a scraper or spatula spoon shape, and it just scrapes out the wax. It's so much easier to use.

Try Little Seed Farm deodorant. It works great and comes in a glass jar. The jar lasts for quite a while because you only use a pee sized amount. Also, before I found Little Seed Farm, I loved the brand Hume (not Lume), but their packaging is plastic. I loved the formula but kept looking for more sustainable packaging. I found all my boxes checked in Little Seed Farm. Glass packaging, no baking soda or aluminum, actually works. It isn’t vegan, but they take awesome care of their goats. Their farm and sustainability practices are awesome. I’m vegetarian and very careful about the animal products I use, and I feel very confident that these goats are well cared for and not exploited.

The mineral sunscreens leave a white cast but if you get one that is tinted then you don't have the white cast. I use Banana Boat sensitive SPF 50 daily and love it. It has both UVA/UVB broad spectrum protection, oil free and won't clog pores. And it is inexpensive.

I use Meow Meow Tweet’s grapefruit cream deodorant. Been using it for a year and a half now I think. I remember the first few weeks I did stink because my body wasn’t used to it yet. But then my body adjusted and it totally works for me! I ask my mom and my boyfriend if I stink and they say I don’t lol and because of the shea butter it contains, it helped with the dry skin around my armpits. I totally recommend. It took several days, but meow meow tweet came through!

All the tops to my Pyrex storage bowl is ripping. What alternatives are there to continue to use these for travel? Are there better glass storage food containers with better tops?
@heidishmidi3 жыл бұрын
I know you said you already found an alternative that you like, but I was just curious if you have ever tried powder sunscreens? I had the same problem you had with sunscreen turning my face white PLUS I hated reapplying every few hours because it always took so long to absorb. My dermatologist recommended a powder sunscreen. She said they really are just as effective and they are much easier to reapply, which means a person is more likely to have adequate protection all day. (For the record I live in the upper midwest where sun intensity isn't as strong, so keep that in mind if you do look into it.) Also.. THANK you for sharing what doesn't work for you. I always appreciate when zero waste advocates are honest about which alternatives are actually worth buying. I dread bringing something new into my home only to find out it was a wasted purchase. It helps so much to learn from other people who have already purchased those items.

Ive used both the beeswax wraps and the vegan SWAG brand wraps. The vegan ones i found to be much stickier than the beeswax ones. I found them both hard to clean properly and as i live in a humid environment, if lunchbags didn’t get removed in a timely manner, the whole wrap had to be thrown away due to mould. I felt like this was totally defeating the reduction in waste purpose.

Did you try Native deodorant? The best deodorant I have ever used.
@vysgiyi3 жыл бұрын
I completely feel you with deodorant. I did the same thing and I was finally done and going back to the crap at target. But another KZbinr mentioned native deodorant so I thought I’d try it. And lo and behold it was in paper packaging! And they had FOUR types of sensitive skin deodorant! I was shook! It smells better than anything natural or non-zero waste lasts longer on my skin and in the tube! And I even found I don’t even have to use for sensitive skin! It’s that good. I’m telling you all this because you might find your native deodorant in packing tape and maybe even tin foil. I used to work for Amazon and they use paper tape and that stuff def works. And you have to put it on quick! Before it sticks to everything or dries up. But packing tape unicorns are out there! 🦄 As for aluminum foil I legit just replaced it with mason/spaghetti sauce/jam/assorted condiment jars. Diced onions. Soup. Leftover chick’n nuggets. A slice of pizza. The only exception being baked goods and I toss those into bowls and use flour sack towels or fitted cloth coverings and those work pretty bomb. And don’t take up like any space. Def better than beeswax wrappings.

I don't know the companies history on zero waste but Q Tip brand the tip is real cotton and the whole thing is compostable. And yes I am with you on the deodorant I rarely use it. A long time ago I was breaking out from whatever I was using so I made my own powder Corn Starch and Baking Soda and got a poof pad and that worked great. I don't know if its because I am past menopause and my body's changed but I rarely sweat and just don't use it at all or very little I do have a antiperspirant tube of Dove brand but it's lasted me over a year and still plenty left. I buy mostly used Pyrex bowls or Anchor Hocking brand with plastic lids solves the whole problem of using saran wrap. I've had the same roll for about 4 years now just rarely have a need for it and won't buy it again once mine is gone. Anna In Ohio

If anyone is looking for deodorant... I'm allergic to baking soda so it took me a long time to find something natural, without baking soda, that worked and also wasn't full of oils that stained my clothes and made me feel gross. I even tried one with charcoal and that also stained my clothes. I now use Hello and I'm very happy with it. Natural deodorant is never going to work as well as conventional but it is really close and my favorite thing about it is I feel nice and dry! It's all the good things, like cruelty free, and though it is plastic, it's made from 100% recycled materials and is also recyclable (not necessarily everywhere) I've only used the fresh citrus scent but I'm a huge fan bc it's a mild scent but still there.

I don’t know if this will help … in the chip aisle of the grocery store, several different makers sell salsa and queso dip in short, straight-sided glass jars. For me they are a perfect size for a lunch portion. Because the opening is wide and straight, they are easy to clean. Of course, won’t fit a sandwich, but if you take soup, stews, or salads they work perfectly and do not leak. Yes, I bought queso and salsa for the jar!

Regarding paper tape I can say there does exist some that is suitable for packing cardboard boxes. I use it for that all the time (as I am not living in the US and it's a kind of local provider I guess it unfortunately makes no sense recommending 😐 ) So, don't give up on that, yet ;) For deodorant I also sometimes go without, sometimes not (tried that out during lockdowns, lol); and for also for a long time nothing has worked, until I tried creme deodorants! not the diy ones though; i trust the professionals here more. same goes for dish washing soap. tried diy but was relieved when I switched back to a "regular" one (an eco one nonetheless, and available in bulk)

My major regret is the bamboo toothbrush and the zerowaste toothpaste going with it. The soft bristle brush deformed really fast and became unusable, while the medium one hurt my gum. But I stuck to it for 2 years. I also regret trying cloth pads. I cannot stand the feeling of anything thicker than my panties and excess stuff, like the wings. But everyone was like "you won't feel it" "its thinner than xyz". And I fell for it. I have never felt more uncomfortable in my entire life.
