I have one I never hear mentioned... it’s kinda random but whenever I use it I think about how it’s zero waste and no one mentions them. Crystal glass nail file! 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 I’ve had one for years now and never ever have to buy disposable nail files and their plastic packaging ever again. A crystal glass nail file is also better for your nails. It doesn’t rip your nail up the way a normal file does. They last forever and never dull. You just rinse it under water when it gets too dusty and it’s like brand new again!

melinda martinez no problem! Haha I went to cosmetology school, so beauty related items have always been a part of my life. So suddenly when I started becoming more zero waste I feel like I came across a good amount of beauty related items to replace my more wasteful options! A lot of them I either never see mentioned or rarely hear about them. Maybe if the information were out there more, people would switch. I find a lot of people continue using wasteful products because they want convenience and don’t even realize there are reusable options!

I have felt the same for a while. One thing you can do is search for a eco brick organization near you. Basically you can put any plastic trash into it until it is packed and they will use it as a brick to build low cost houses. I do this with a lot of pill bottles and containers and all that unavoidable stuff to keep it out of landfill. I don’t know why this is not talked about much

Hey just to calm you down a bit: medical waste is only about 1% of all plastic waste in Germany. So it can't be much more wherever you live. You should never feel bad about that! Your health should be the most important thing to you.

Same here. But remember your health should come first. Remember theres a reason medical stuff comes in plastic, look up medical things from 30s or earlier. You'll notice death rates were higher, it's a pain for it to come in plastic but its low cost and makes sure the product isn't tampered with!

It is a really small thing in the scheme of things but when I have to go get my blood drawn..several times a year....I actually save the 'plastic/rubber' band that they use at the top of my arm. I usually have to watch them very carefully so I can 'catch' them before they automatically go to throw it out. So far, I've been able to keep it and reuse it. I know it's really small but there is so much I CAN'T do about my medical waste , I have to appreciate when I can do 'anything' no matter how small. As well, when I go to my chiropractor weekly, he has a roll of paper on the table that he changes for each patient where we put our face down on the table....I bring my own 'hankie' and put it over the paper and then he doesn't have to change the paper. Again, very small, but I feel good doing all I can. There is one other lady that does it too...still waiting for it to really become the new normal in the office...

Something no one seems to talk about, being on a zero waist quest myself: Where does your product come from!? I mean you can use a bamboo toothbrush but if it still gets shipped from China what the hell are we doing?!? Sorry if I sound too cynical but it helps me to not only look at the end product as a sustainable option but I really believe we can reduce our carbon footprint so to speak by also looking at its origins.

I think the question is, if both of your options for a tooth brush are coming from China, why not choose bamboo? These are incredibly difficult choices to weigh and need an entire life cycle analysis to answer those questions. Which plenty of people study professionally all their life and still don’t have a definitive answer. It’s very complicated and literally impossible for an average individual to calculate. So I assume that’s why not many people talk about it.

I totally agree! I’ve realised that in some cases it is better to use a locally made option even if it is in more plastic. Plastic is nasty but not as nasty as the CO2 involved in shipping things from overseas. Waste isn’t killing us and our earth as quickly as climate change.

Medical stuff really needs to be in plastic to stay sterile. Paper is too porous to be used if the area needs to be sterile. I use support bandages daily, and they come in plastic. There isn't an alternative for me that I can use. They can't be reused either due to their nature, so they need to be binned. I'm not going to feel guilty about something I can't avoid, unless I have my leg amputated. But that's a little drastic.

Medical supplies is a totally acceptable use for plastic. The bandaids she was talking about, if you buy standard bandaids they still come wrapped in paper but the bandage itself is plastic. These are obviously not the same kind you need.

We only but huge bulk bottles of oil so the spray is definitely more convenient and comfortable then lifting several pounds of oil to try and gently pour a small amount. It’s not a necessity but it is useful

We bought the reusable water balloons for my daughter’s birthday party this summer. Such a great investment my kids played with them all summer and right now they are dried and stored until next summer! They held up well and look like they will last a long time! Finally something newer than all the basics and even some of the advanced ones out there still aren't all that advanced...Thank you for doing this one! Especially more about climate change, since half the part about going zero waste is about making a difference in our environment overall. Edit: the reusable water balloons work well, I used some blanket yarn, it's lightweight but wicked warm, and they crochet up pretty quickly I think. Also about the bandaids, we're more so trying to find ones that are dark enough for my boyfriend, as Madison can definitely relate to. We did see the patch ones recently when searching for darker skin tone bandaids. More so THANK YOU for promoting safe sex to others! Since that in itself makes a bigger impact on people overall, The Fairly Local Vegan has also mentioned that not too long ago, which I cannot praise both of you enough for!

I used to use condoms with my partner, and once we got tested and knew we'd be long-term, I got an IUD! No babies for us and reducing plastic waste! But of course, condoms are essential to protect from STIs if you have multiple/new partners!

THANK YOU, I also get frustrated when I’m trying to find more “advanced” swaps and they are so few and far between. I didn’t know that charcoal could be boiled and reused, so that’s awesome! And I’ll definitely pick up that lint roller for my brother, he goes through a lot of them that it’ll be super handy! Another swap I have never seen anyone talk about is air filters. We have a reusable air filter that was just clean out with our hose every month or so instead of continually buying new air filters for our house. It is made of plastic, but it’s worked well for us over the last year or so that we have had it and in that time we would have sent so many more to the landfill if we had traditional air filters. Definitely worth checking into!

Lu Lu hey! Ours we are able to clean by just rinsing it off with our hose. We got it at either Home Depot or Lowe’s and it’s been really great! I have allergies too so I good filter makes a big different (especially if you have a bunch pf animals like me lol) I don’t remember exactly how much it was (definitely not more than $30) but it has more than paid for itself.

​@@Selena8461 Depending on how much you need it, and what you need it for. If you actually need it to catch smoke and pollens, you may need to have a micron level filter like a hepa filter which is not washable. (specifically because water destroys the interlacing layers, people think they can wash them, because intuitively it seems like it should be possible, but after washing at best they can catch dust as well as fabric-- which is not well-- the way they're made to catch small particles is a lattice and that gets compressed and wrecked by water. I've never seen/found a reusable filter which has the same ability to catch really small particles, but I would love one to be made.) However, you can things that have hepa filters but also a pre-filter mesh, or which use a very large filter, or some additional measures, so that you don't have to replace the un-washable filter as often. If you’re in a monagamous relationship, you can consider a diaphragm, but it will not protect you from stds. It’s a barrier form of birth control that is generally used with spermicidal lube, so I’m unsure of the effectiveness without the use of spermicidal lube. I’m going to use mine without spermicidal lube as a backup method while I’m on the patch for the week you have your regular cycle. You can also look into period tracking apps which can tell you the times of the month you’re most likely to become pregnant and avoid having sex at those times altogether. I would highly recommend the use of condoms though, as std rates skyrocket to outbreak levels. Get tested regularly, because you never know. Your partner could unknowingly be carrying something and never exhibit any symptoms. Women get the short end of the stick when it comes to stds as they are much more likely to experience symptoms when infected with an std. which could mean earlier detection and thus treatment, but not all stds are curable yet, and you don’t want to be stuck with something for life!

Letting cats outside is unfortunately extremely anti ecofriendly. Look up the studies on how much wildlife cats straight up murder! Also their waste can be toxic when left in food gardens, and children's sandboxes, etc. I love my cats, but they're indoor-only. They never try to escape and they are perfectly content. And they live so much longer because they aren't eaten or hit by cars. I use a natural, non clay based litter (world's best cat litter brand) but there's also other corn, pine, and paper-based products which are good too. As for food, cats are obligate carnivores, which means they /must/ eat a carnivorous diet. They cannot be fed a vegan diet like dogs can tolerate. You can either go with a raw-meat diet and buy meats from sources you trust to be ethical (as much as that's possible) or you can try to do research on the best food brands. The grain-free diets tend to be more transparent about their practices. My cat is over 20 years old and is on a medical diet now, but he used to be on raw meat/grain free food for many years.

a ghost I do agree with you completely, though sadly my whole family is from Bosnia and they’ve got strays everywhere, it really sucks. This is a big issue throughout most poorer countries in Europe. I don’t really see the issue in the US. I wish all these animals got loving owners and peaceful homes. Third world countries also have this stray issue, but we shouldn’t have to dictate what animal goes inside or outside just because humans are very domesticated - indoor creatures. It’s not always possible to put a pet indoors but letting them go outside & roam around seems like the most natural option. I know of cats who thrive when they’re outside/ can’t wait to run out the door. We as humans used to go outside too instead of go on a big slab of ceramic or plastic that goes into our water system with all this other waste 😂 Indoor Plumbing is great.

I don't comment much, but you're the first low waste/sustainable youtuber I discovered, and you taught me what exactly what this lifestyle is all about!! You opened my eyes and made me realize certain things I was doing weren't actually sustainable (such as supporting greenwashing brands, recycling instead of reducing first, etc.). It's only been a couple months, but you've taught me so much. I'm slowly making swaps in my life as I use up what I currently have, and not only that, I've been making healthier choices that aren't just better for the environment, but for my body, too. For example, I used to be super into coloring my hair crazy colors, but you opened my eyes to how harmful it is to our water (and it can be super wasteful) and our bodies. This was definitely hard to come to terms with for me because I'm a cosmetologist, but ultimately, it just doesn't matter to me anymore. There are so many other *eco-friendly* ways to express myself! I also started coloring my hair with henna just so I could still have a little red in my hair. ^^ but yeah lol! I'm just so grateful for everything you put out! I could go on and on lol but I'll stop there haha. I just want you to know inspire me so much, Shelbi 😭😭💖 and so so many others!! THANK YOU for all you do!

Finally someone said it! I have been wondering when someone in the zero waste community was going to talk about condom use and how it isn’t very zero waste friendly. And thanks, Shelby for actually breaking down the fact that it takes more resources to sustain a life than it would be to “properly dispose” the condom. Perfect analysis! It’s also going to take more resources to clear up any infection or virus that could result in unsafe sex (unfortunately infections are contagious while diseases can be either contagious or non contagious).. I think this can also be a time for more companies to come up with more cost efficient solutions for safer sex practices to allow ALL adults access to those resources regardless of socioeconomic status. Again, thank you Shelby for sharing these swaps!💕

Charlotta - there’s no such thing as ‘safe sex’ - you can make your sex sessions safer, but there’s always some risk involved. Sorry if I’m coming across as judgemental - I’m not trying to - I’ve been a sexual health worker for over a decade and some people, especially younger, and older people who have just started to date again following a bereavement, divorce or boredom, have unrealistic opinions about ‘safe sex’. I would definitely recommend condoms to people, I’ve given out hundreds, maybe thousands. Definitely don’t re-use them either :) The female version of condom is called a femidom (in the UK) and can be kept in place for up to 12 hours as long as both rings stay in place, so might cut down on condom use, they’re not as safe as a male version condom, but are great for loving couples with a latex allergy. (I’ve used condoms to cover finger injuries whilst out canoeing and kayaking too!)

I've got to look up the science on this one... it was my understanding that water has to be forced thru the charcoal to filter out impurities. I don't think placing charcoal in water will extract impurities from the water... let me know if you have a scientific source to support this. Thx

Bsar Cich I’m a chemical engineering student, and based on what I know about separation principles, I think you’re right. impurities are removed through contact with the charcoal, so while some may be removed just by sitting, not all will.

I'm trying to transition to zero waste. Thought that would be easier than going all in right from the start. I have been making a decent amount of waste lately, but I haven't bought the things that are causing it. When my grandmother died I took most of the food in the house, which included a lot of individually packaged items. I stopped buying single serving packaging (got a reusable Keurig cup for example). I've also started boiling veggie scraps for stock before composting them. I also don't plan to buy a new car ever. To have one that looks "fancy" after I graduate I'm remodeling an antique muscle car with a fuel efficient engine. This way I can reduce the amount of vehicle waste (those cars are huge), while driving something cool.

We used to use them all the time when I was a kid. It was even a required pocket item when I was in the Brownies! We need to bring these back. For finding handkerchiefs, I find going to yard sales, flea markets, and resale shops are handy. You could also find an old stained up cloth something from one of the sales/shops and cut them up, definitely not as pretty, but it works.

You can buy hankies on Amazon. Possibly earth hero (havent checked.) But I know amazon has some really nice ones that are pretty and soft (I dont lile ones that my nose is rubbed raw). I would check earth hero first since shipping is more ecofriendly but if nothing else standard shipping with a large amazon order may help (large meaning wait till you need several things instead of 1 at a time)

I secretly love the swap videos as that is what got me started last year. I have 2 more not commonly mentioned swaps. A silicon baking mat, replaces foil or baking paper and makes washing up a breeze. A reusable sturdy liquids bag for the airport. Placing aside the fact that flying isn’t environmentally friendly, it really saddens me to see travellers use a new plastic bag every time they fly and throw it away after use.

It's easier to cover the pan evenly with a spray and you won't have an oil puddle in your pan from adding to much. It's also less of a mess to deal with as you won't need to spread it out with a towel or soak up excess oil or get oil all over your hands.

Oh hey, we have a misto thing! We've never ever used spray oil so it wasn't really a swap, it was just that my mom wanted to have something to be able to spray thinner layers of oil rather than pouring that generally uses more oil. Oh hey, we also have a reusable lint roller! 😂 Sort of a swap, we have one that's for floors and one for regular stuff. Not that we really used a ton of lint rollers in the first place but we used some. We're not really an eco aware family because of money and barriers, these were just things we got to save money in the long run and have options 😅

As a medical zero waste alternative I use reusable bandages. They never directly touch a wound so it is no problem if they are not sterile. If you ned it for a wound just use a sterile compress and fix it with the washable bandage. And if it's just a sprain and the bandage is for support there is no need fpór a sterile bandage. My famliy uses them as long as i can remember.

I teach first aid classes and I've been frustrated about the lack of eco-friendly first aid kits for a while- I'm excited for you to make that video. I like what you're trying to say here, but I'm one of those channels that posted a video on basic alternatives to plastic, and I do not think we are done talking about the general "essentials" yet. I think a lot of people that come to our pages are not necessarily advanced in zero waste and some are not practicing zero waste at all. I think that there is still room for these discussions and inspiring videos. Maybe these videos about using a reusable water bottle will motivate the person that buys bottled water by the case! I understand that you are excited to take on the bigger issues...and I AGREE. They need to be addressed. But I feel like your video hinted that the other stuff isn't important anymore and I do think that it is. But I did enjoy seeing your latest alternatives. It's all very interesting. I asked for the Misto sprayer on my wedding registry, and I love it! For not being an aerosol sprayer, the spray is really good, just make sure you pump it a fair amount (more than you think) before trying to use it.

You need to give plants straight up tap water. They need those minerals. Or, so I've heard.

Tap water often contains salts and metals, sometimes they're just naturally occurring in the ground water source and others they're added to condition the water. These can build up in the soil over time and when the concentration gets high enough start burning the roots of the plants preventing them from absorbing water properly. If your potted plants need more nutrients it's best to use a proper fertilizer. You could even make your own for some serious zero waste.

Every niche interest people have has its own zero waste swaps, I think. I needed a solvent for art projects and found Eco-Solve, which replaces acetone, is just as poweful, not a pollutant, doesn't emit toxic vapors, and comes in a plastic free package! Plus it smells like licorice, so I love using it.

People fall on roofing iron, get nasty splinters, get infected insect bites, sprain joints, get blisters as big as cucumber slices, smash plates on themselves while drunk, get glass in their feet, cut their heads open on cupboard doors, go a bit too far with the craft knife, etc etc.
