This brings back memories. 1987 and I was 11yrs old. Our cousin would drive me to school in his 1984 VK SS 5.0. It had worked engine and felt like the fastest car on the planet. He claimed that it was faster than a 911 Porsche and don't think that he was making that up. It took 20+ year's for me to experience another road going car with that kind of acceleration.

Yes all related,there are a few Monza's in Aus as Peter Brock was campaigning to import them. Unfortunately it did get the green light from GMH,but of the couple i saw in real life both had VH commodore front end panels fitted.
@davidewhite694 жыл бұрын
The Aussie Commodore was based on a GM world plan body. It had significant structural changes in the floor pan and suspension uprights because the test car from Europe litterally fell apart in outback testing. The Monza Brock imported was planned to be mas imported with a HDT improved 308 V8, but Holden refused to carry out the engineering changes to make it pass ADRs, so it was shelved, but all was not lost as Brock used the independent rear suspension in his HDT Director. You can see the similarities in this pic i.imgur.com/EkmBaQt.jpg

Great car; however, that Holley electric fuel pump needs to be either better mounted to enable some noise to be removed or bin it and fit a Carter Black electric fuel pump. Honestly i think it would be low 4's. On that fastest run, we're not even starting to wind the power on until about 40kph. We know that particular road is bad for traction. Using the stall the converter the way it was intended would be epic. The owner has had it on a drag strip with these tyres and they didn't even hook on the prepped surface. Regardless it makes it such a fun car to cruise around in. We can't believe it's nearly 40 years old.

Man- it just needs some MT drag radials and it'll hook better. Prob is when you lower Commodores it throws out the instant center so badly- they just fry tyres so badly. That's why people who drag race with stock pick up points tend to do it at standard ride hight OR make brakets to lower the rear puck up points for the lower trailing arms. Instant center is SO IMPORTANT for straight line rear suspension geometry- mess with it the wrong way and it hurts traction badly

We do make an effort to make things look theatrical for the videos, some of that is done with in the editing, tricks which we might share down the track about how we make things look and sound like they do. We are also not always the ones driving the cars. If you look real closely at the skid in this video, my watch disappears and the audio is also from a different point throughout the day. Fun doesn't equal fast, but why would you drive it if it isn't fun, right?

I thought she would launch a little harder being a 355 , check out my 330 build on my channel

Well it could. But these old tyres were not helping. Any more aggressive and we would just get more smoke than forward movement.

Zero To 60 straya 👌 i was wondering why you werent gunning it off the line , as mine has a 5000 convertor and 3.5 gears anything under 60 is a “accidental lose of traction”

I drove a couple of early Commodores pretty uninspiring to be honest. Even with a big V8. Very average handling and steering vague as.. wouldn't want big power in 1. Would get too loose.

I think that is what makes them exciting haha. To be fair, if you sink some money in to handling you can get these really working well. The "Commodore Cup" race series that was around 10-15 years ago, had a brilliant low cost suspension setup which would get these out handling GT3 Porsches. But you are 100% correct about the stock ones.

@@ZeroTo60Tube I have a couple of old 240z's so was keen to see how a VB with a straight 6 drove. The old Holden Red engine was very asthmatic. Made me appreciate how far ahead the Nissan L6 of a similar vintage was and the clutch in the holdens was very heavy. I've learnt that sometimes if you drive a bad example it can really ruin your opinion of a particular car. But I've always found the Japanese stuff to be really well built and ahead of its time. I do like the styling of the old VBs and I've always had a soft spot for the VK SS Blue Meanies but not sure if I would ever own 1.
