This is THEE BEST simple explanation I have seen. I am a 75 yo male that has not been to a doctor in 55 years except 2 colonoscopies (no polyps). Yesterday I had my second colonoscopy and they said I did have the "pockets". I have never had any medical issues. No aches, pains, acid reflux, bloating, or constipation. The information on this subject is all over the map. Yes you can have fiber no you can't have have fiber. Yes you can have nuts no you can't have nuts. Don't know what to do I do NOT have symptoms so I'll just do what I have been doing.

So a friend of mine shared a list of do's/don'ts, and one thing was really important about this. It's not that you always avoid 'the bad stuff'. It's that you avoid the 'bad stuff' when you have a flare-up. After your body recovers, then you should go back to eating it. So things like nuts, fruits/veggies with seeds, etc. It's more complex than a 'just do this all the time'. And that's why the information's been all over the map on it.

Same here.. I was told by my old gastroenterologist more than 5 years ago {he retired now} that I have one but tiny only and the new doctor told me also when I had colonoscopy recently but did not explain what I should do. After colonoscopy, you're not really alert enough to ask a lot of questions. I think I would make an appointment to my doctor again.

This is nice and clear and not overly verbose. Many thanks. I lost my mother to sepsis caused by diverticulitis and I have recently been diagnosed with diverticulosis when my routine feces test apparently showed blood in my feces. It must have been microscopic because It wasn’t visible. After a colonoscopy, during which a polyp was removed I have still had no symptoms after three years. I have vastly increased my exercise from zero to daily walking on a treadmill and took up golf (great fun). I will be 70 next year so losing weight us a challenge, I could do with shifting around 15 to 20 lbs but it’s stubborn!

I also had been diagnosed with Acute Diverticulitis. I did not have surgery, because I only had the abdomen pain. I got better in the hospital during my 36 hour stay and sent me home. I had to switch my diet to this similar diet from @bunnyfooofoo did. I planned to wait out the surgery and see if the diet change would help. I am 28 months from my hospital visit and my issues have subsided, for the most part. Minimal issues since...mainly gas buildup will cause some slight discomfort. No alcohol since the night before I was admitted to the hospital. I take daily fiber pills to help boost up my fiber intake. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. I was 36 when I was diagnosed. I think it's important to add that lower abdominal pain can also be felt in the middle and just to the right of the middle abdomen. It's less common, but can still occur. If you rule out lower right abdominal pain, then you might miss it initially. (Patient might feel like they have a bladder or kidney infection, but it could be diverticulitis.) Of course, a CT scan will show if a patient has diverticulitis to confirm it. Also, I'm glad you said to treat with the amoxicillin-clavulonate because it really works well and fast without feeling awful, generally, whereas other patients who have been prescribed other types that made them feel awful.

Very well explained - easy to understand. There must be exceptions to eating a high fibre diet. All the people I know that have this disease, ALL were on a high fibre diet and have had to lower their fibre content after diagnosis. I know a lot of people that do not consume high fibre and they have no issues. I used to eat a lot of fibre and was in the worst health of my life. Make me curious.

@@chrismorrison7 If your Mum is in hospital they will be carrying out a more detailed examination than my husbands GP did. His symptoms persisted without a second opinion until he told them his Bupa cover would provide for a referal. They started with blood tests and progressed to an MRI and then a CT scan but they only diagnosed cancer after he had a colonoscopy. By the time he had his operation it was already stage 4. He put up a good fight for nearly 2 years and we made the most of every moment but early diagnosis may have made all the difference.

A high fibre diet is highly inappropriate for gut problems because it makes them worse. Fibre makes the stool too bulky for the colon to push out. What is needed is eating healthy, omega 3 rich fats which lubricate the stool and enables it to slide out easily. Drinking about 30ml EVOO is the laxative to use which soothes, not irritates the gut. When I changed to a low carb diet, I had withdrawal symptoms when my intestines were getting rid of all the high fibre rubbish I'd been putting into them for years. After one day of diarrhoea, my belly deflated and all bowel discomfort went with it. Now I pass a smooth, greasy stool without any difficulty and it doesn't have to be daily. High fibre for bowel problems is the worst possible advice. Back in the 1950s and earlier, it never occurred to anyone to do such a stupid thing. When constipated the normal remedy was castor oil, now its olive oil.

At last - I now have understanding. 2 years ago I became very ill. Pain in lower left abdomen, fever, vomiting, mucus and blood in my diarrhea, headache and confusion. This went on and got worse over 3 weeks. I was ignored by 111 services, 1st trip to hospital and my GP. Constantly told to drink water and take paracetamol. I was bedridden and towards the end I knew I was going to die. I went to hospital for a 2nd time where a blood test revealed high markers - I was given a CT scan which showed that my bowel had perforated - this resulted in an emergency colostomy. I was very poorly and was in ICU for 2 weeks due to Peritonitis and abscess.

Hello, thank you for this video. I am hoping either someone at this channel, or someone reading this can shed some light on my situation (I apologize for the lengthy message ahead of time, but a lot has happened): 1. July 7th, 2023: Severe lower back pain, right side, getting worse by the hour; wife drove me to the ER. 2. First two hours (this is the US after all) everyone at the ER suspecting Kidney Stones from pain and symptoms. 3. Total Blood Panel run, CT scan of the Abdomen and Pelvis performed. 4. CT scan revealed liver, pancreas, spleen, gallbladder and appendix all normal; kidneys also normal with no kidney stones present; no free fluid in the Pelvis; Bladder and Seminal Vesicles normal. 5. What the CT scan DID find; Scattered Diverticula throughout the Colon with NO evidence of Diverticulitis. 6. Blood Panel was normal for all tests run, no high White Count; No acute disease in the Abdomen or Pelvis. This seems pretty straight forward on paper, however, here is the strange part I would like to find out answers for many questions: 1. The first part of any description for this condition is if there is pain, it is in the LOWER LEFT ABDOMEN. I had (and still have, 6 days later) pain in my LOWER RIGHT BACK. I have never had pain on the left side. 2. I have not had constipation (have never had it, actually) over any time in the past 10 years, never mind when this started. 3. I do not have any rectal bleeding. 4. I did, and do not, have a fever. 5. I am a 60 year old male that is 5' 9" tall and weigh approximately 160 pounds. I just finished my annual physical with my primary doctor 2 DAYS PRIOR to going to the ER. My doctor's exact words were, "You are the epitome of health, all of your labs are excellent, and physically you are in excellent health. A note here, if I may: My wife and I are very active, we exercise regularly, stair climb on weekends, and have just started hiking with our local Sierra Club. My current resting heart rate averages 54 to 56 beats per minute, my blood pressure as of last week was 123 / 66, my cholesterol is 136 (Total). I have a pretty healthy diet (with my only vice being a diet soda 4 or 5 times a week), I don't drink, I don't smoke, and overall I have been in excellent health for many years. The reason I stated all of that in the note above is because in this video (and everywhere else I've researched), it states this condition is caused by: 1. Low Fibre diet 2. Overweight 3. Sedentary lifestyle Of which NONE of these apply to me. So the only "symptom", or condition, I have that fits the diagnosis of Diverticulosis is that I am 60 years of age. NONE of the other information given to me from the ER doctor, or that we have found online, points to me having Diverticulosis. Also, this is now Thursday, July 13th (6 days post ER), and I STILL have pain on my right side, and I was on a liquid only diet until yesterday (5 days), and have lost 4 to 5 pounds since last Friday because of that. The symptoms change daily, to sometimes the pain is when sitting, sometimes when standing, but it seems to be fine when lying down for the past couple of days. So, in closing (couldn't resist): Has anyone at this channel, or anyone reading this far (and thank you if you have) ever seen or heard of a case of severe lower back pain on the right side only being diagnosed as Diverticulosis? Thank you, Marc

@lizamarieborja6435 Жыл бұрын
Hello, Marc. I wanted to jump in on this thread as we're slightly on the same boat. The only potential cause in my case is sedentary lifestyle, thanks to my 7-4 office job. Other than that, I am not obese, never smoked, and am just in my 30s. I do feel the gnawing, burning pain in my lower left abdomen. It comes and goes, so it's really bothersome. My abdominal scan and blood tests came out normal, so I'd like to believe that I have a clean bill of health except that I am still in pain. 😥
@marcd1981
@marcd1981 Жыл бұрын
@@lizamarieborja6435 Hi Liza, sorry to hear about your condition. My biggest concern was being diagnosed with this condition WITHOUT abdominal pain. The doctor should have known better than to give me the wrong diagnosis. It was confirmed two days ago (Friday) that the pain in my lower right back has nothing to do with having diverticula on my intestine. Diverticulosis does not have pain involved, and is only found when searching with another method, such as a colonoscopy or a CT scan. It's unbelievable that I spent a week thinking I had a condition that I did not, and the doctor missed such obvious signs.

@@bethwilcox7121 Hello Beth, and Happy Holidays! Thank you for writing, this post was originally from 5 months ago, so it's good to know it is still out there being read. This started on July 7th, and it is now November 29th. I have been to a total of 11 doctors with three different medical facilities, and all they are able to tell me still is what I do not have. No one can tell me what is causing the pain I have in my right flank, all day, every day, from when I get up in the morning until I go to bed. The only thing that relieves the pressure and pain in my flank area is laying on my back. To answer your question, Beth, I have had two MRIs so far. One was of my low back (Lumbar area) that a chiropractor ordered, the second was of my right side / abdomen checking for musculoskeletal problems ordered by an Orthopedic doctor. They did not find a musculoskeletal problem, nor anything hernia related. This doctor sent me to another Orthopedic doctor specializing in the spine. The spine doctor has me getting two more images, a SPECT CT and an MRI of my mid to upper spine (Thoracic area). He thinks there is a possibility the nerves running with the muscle from my mid-back, around my right hip, and in to my naval, are being constricted or interfered with in some way. I am really hoping someone figures something out soon, this is affecting how I live my life. I am not eating or working out the same as I did a few months ago, and my wife and I have canceled several outings and a trip we were supposed to take in September. The pressure and pain varies almost day to day now, sometimes more standing, sometimes more sitting, and then the only thing I can do is lay down for 20 or 30 minutes to relieve it.

I have an ache all over my lower stomach and pass small amounts of fresh blood multiple times a day,don have constipation I have a constant urge to go to the toilet but only blood comes out.

Has anyone experienced on a carnivore diet? I am on one for about 1.5yrs .... had hull pain , felt a bit dizzy, general feeling of being under, Next morning no pain, but just a bit under. As for hte fiber, never had due to carnivore, but i did put chillies in my meat and it triggered running hot stooles on Sunday but abdominal dull pain came Monday evening.

Yep. No beans. No legumes. No avocado or any oatmeal. Just water, salads and anything that doesn't include fiber. Also skip greasy foods. It agitates the descending colon. Inflammation can be felt

This is NOT True! Yes, everything I've read says that Diverticulitis is the result of a low fiber diet. I am a 50-year (WFPB) VEGAN, who has been studying nutrition for 50 years and i cook all of my own organic Whole Food recipe meals. I am 77 years old. You can imagine my shock when I got a colonoscopy and the doctor told me I had diverticulosis and told me to eat lots of fiber which has always been the main focus of my meals. I eat Chickpeas 5 times a week (Hummus, falafel, Vegan Tuna), avocados, black beans and tons of oats. Up until a year ago I had the most beautiful #4 Turds and now I've got constipation everyday with #1 Pebble turds. I want my regular bowel movements. Got app[ointment to a Gastroenterologist next month. Believe me when I tell you that no one is more conscious of what they eat than I am and here I sit completely dumbfounded!

I’m 66 yo, very fit, thin, eat very little meat, and was in hospital for 7 days until pain completely subsided. Went home and docs said I had fully recovered, the puncture had sealed on its own. 3 months later I’m back in hospital with same pain going on 3rd day with pain at about a 4 at worst. I’ll be going through elective surgery to remove the affected colon section after colonoscopy. Great video, thank you.

Oh noes! I think this is what I have. I thought I had food poisoning 2 months ago when I ate some undercooked pork (followed the dumb instructions tho). Thought I had to quit meat so switching to WFPB diet helped alleviate the symptoms. No wonder it still feels like I'm dying and had low iron and RBC.

Got colonoscopy 3 months ago after passing blood. And pain under my right ribs. As soon as they went in. Problem. Bloody hemeroids. But no polyps and colon clear Later they gave me a sheet explaining. Diverticulitis grade 1 Advice was to eat loads of fibre and drink loads of water. And i don't wanna see you again. I said i jokingly said i dont wanna see you either. For years I've been eating porridge oats for breakfast in winter and museli in summer and rice pudding before bed. So ive swapped the tinned rice pudding for weetabix. Which is full of fibre. Every one here is giving me opposite advice? Every morning i have a table spoon of apple cider vinegar. A clove of garlic. Extra virgin olive oil on an empty stomach an hour later i have porridge oats? Help anyone??

The remedy suggested is dubious as many of the comments have pointed out. Do I really have to point out that we are not all the same in terms of health and diet. Standard dietary advice is highly suspect and probably has more to do with geopolitics and marketing from the big companies. Do your own research. Keep a log and learn from your own experience. If you need to visit a doctor take your own knowledge with you. Good luck.
