[The following was posted in "Chinese Archery" group on Facebook. I thought I would repost it here for those of whom who would like to know what is said in the video.] I have been meaning to summarize, transcribe and translate the linked video for the group regarding techniques to speed nock for horse archery (or to nock without looking). Although the video is about horse archery, the techniques are useful for archers who don’t ride horses and use either the thumb draw or the finger draw. I have incorporated two of the techniques when I practice. The quality of the video is not the best, but the content is very useful. If anyone has related information on the techniques, please do share. The translation is not word for word because that would be too long. Any corrections are welcome and please let me know, and I’ll edit the post. Summarized/transcribed translation below, with my notes in brackets: === Part I - Brief intro on various movements/styles for horse archery (starting around 0’42”) Firstly, for horse archery, it’s common to use the thumb draw. But both thumb and fingers draws are acceptable, and the arrow can be placed on either side of the bow. Second, the arrows can be pulled from the quiver from the left, right, or back, as well as from the waist [i.e. when arrows are held by the belt]. Third, the arrow could be held in bow hand or draw hand. Some styles or movements may be banned/restricted depends on the competition event rules, so adjustments maybe necessary. Part II - Basic hand nocking techniques (starting around 1’55”) There are five techniques to be used depending on the movement/styles applied. The following are the basic hand techniques in the order of the presentation: 1 - “Goose Tail” (雁尾式) (around 2’10) - Use the index finger and thumb as a “funnel” and guide the string from outside in to nock the arrow. The archer would be holding the fletching. 2 - “Crane Beak” (鶴喙式) (around 2’50”) - Use the index and thumb to “pinch” the nock and guide the string from the inside of the fingers out to nock the arrow [Note: this is technique is likely already familiar to most because it’s incorporated the common “4 step” nocking process.] 3 - “Eagle Hook” (鷹勾式) (around 3’8”) - The index finger “hooks” on the thumb and pinch the arrow nock. Guide the string using the side of the thumb that is facing out. 4 - “Yuji” (魚際式) (around 3’24”) - Holding the arrow with index and middle fingers. Guide the string using the “Yuji” part o the palm. [Note: “Yuji” is a name given to the acupuncture point in the fleshy part of the palm at the root of the thumb.] 5 - “The Clam” (河蚌式) (around 3’40”) - Hold the arrow using the lower fingers with the arrow pointing down, and the nock is at the heart of the palm. As the arrow is placed on the bow, rotate the arrow so it becomes pointing forward, and switch to index/middle fingers to hold the arrow. Use the inside of the palm to guide the string to nock. Note that because you won’t be looking at the nock, as you grab the arrow, you need to feel the nock so it can be aligned with the string. This nock rotation needs to be quick. It comes with practice and experience. Part III - Basic arrow movement and nock applications (starting around 5’00”) There are seven basic applications, and it can be adjusted based on the movement, how the arrows are pulled, and the nock techniques used. There are numerous combinations. 1 - “Moon Cradle” (懷中抱月) (around 5’30”) - It can used whether the arrow is pulled from the left or right quiver. Use the Goose Tail and cross the draw arm and the bow arm. Draw and release with thumb. 2 - “Oolong [Black Dragon] Whip” (烏龍擺尾) (around 6’30”) - Suitable for back quiver. As the arrow is pulled, rotate [or “whipping”] the arrow with index finger press on the thumb as a leverage point. Then apply Moon Cradle. 3 - “Round Table” (扭轉乾坤) (around 7’40”) - Suitable for when arrows are held in the bow hand and when the arrow is pointed up and the nock down. Index and thumb pinch the nock, rotate the arrow, and apply Moon Cradle. [Note: there is no real short term English equivalent of “扭轉乾坤”, which roughly means “reverse or rotate heaven and earth”. 乾坤 are symbols in ba-gua (八卦) that represent the opposite of pure Ying and pure Yang.] 4 - “Angel Pierce” (玉女穿梭) (around 8’20”) - Suitable for when placing the arrow on the left side of the bow. It can be applied either when arrow are held in the bow hand with arrow pointed down or when pulling the arrow from the left quiver. Apply either the “Crane Beak” or “Yuji” when nocking the arrow. When placing the arrow from the right, apply slight pressure on the arrow against the bow handle as the arrow is pulled back, so as the arrow head would move to the left as it passes the riser/handle. Then apply slight pressure on the arrow against the string as the arrow is pushed forward. This would help stablize the arrow when on the horse. [Note: Another name that is hard to translate. The name roughly means “Jade Lady [similar to an angel] moving through. For those who practice Taiji, 玉女穿梭 is the same name given to one of the movements.] 5 - “Enters the Guest” (推門內客[?]) (around 10’20”) - Suitable for pulling arrow from the right quiver. Apply “The Clam” and grab the arrow from the right quiver. Place, rotate and push, and nock the arrow. Note that almost no one uses this technique in the country [China]. 6 - “Unsheathe the Saber” (拔刀相助) (around 11’10”) - Suitable for pulling the arrow placed in the waist belt [or when using a quiver similar to the Manchu quiver when the fletching is pointed back]. “Unsheathe” the arrow by pulling it out toward the back, drawing a big circle toward the bow, bow hand then holds the arrow, then use Crane Beak to nock. Eagle Hook can also be applied when nocking, then use either thumb or finger draw. 7 - ”Parting the Sea” (抽刀斷水) (around 12’40”) - Suitable for pulling from back quiver by using the Eagle Hook and nock the arrow directly to the right side of the bow, and use either the finger or thumb draw. It could also be used to place the arrow on the left side of the bow, and 1) draw with fingers (palm upside down) with canting of the bow, or 2) rotate the draw hand and draw with the normal finger draw. Part IV - Conclusion (beginning around 13’30”) There are many combination of these techniques and styles (as demonstrated in the video). [Not further transcribed.]
