Oh my god! I followed this recipe recently and it was stunning. Though I couldn't find potato starch in Tesco or ASDA though. And I couldn't find MSG in any supermarket either. (I've ordered some online instead for future) The closest I got to MSG was a Knorr Savoury Seasoning / Flavour Enhancer which had MSG in it. I used that as a substitute to MSG and I used Cornflower instead of the potato starch and the results were still very similar to what you'd get from a takeaway and it was amazing. I don't have a chinese supermarket near me so unfortunately I had to use Schwartz Five Spice which I know what you mean is different. Though the chicken, veg and overall finish of the S&P chicken was amazing. Nice golden batter, great flavour and I'd say better than my local takeaway. So so impressed. I'll be trying more of your recipes! I'm on an asian food binge at the minute and this is helping me live my best life! Thanks guys! x

Wow, something which is popular and often quite expensive at the takeaways is broken down and made simple for people to do - a dish which is affordable. Your advice about the carrots was spot on. Attempted this dish without carrots because we didn't have any and it tasted differently. Attempted this dish again with carrots and the taste was explosive. You two are inspirational and are saving me a fortune each month. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Just a heads up.I know this recipe used potato starch and is a little different,however sometimes referring to the use of potato starch or cornstarch can confuse us Brits.Cornflour can be used as an alternative and like for like in most dishes .Cornstarch uses just the starchy end of the corn and cornflour uses all the kernel which provides more vitamins and minerals.Just thought I would throw it out there if you go to Tesco and are soley looking for a starch product,when cornflour can be used as an alternative.Great recipe btw
@ZiangsFoodWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
The point in this is to show how a takeaway will actually make it, dubbing our lessens it a lot, yes you can use corn starch, but it doesn’t hold its texture as well. If you want it exactly like a Uk takeaway, use potato starch.. also we are brits?!
@richtea33024 жыл бұрын

Because I've seen a few recipes for the squid version that don't add any egg. They just rely on the wetness of the squid for the starch to stick to. And obviously I'd only deep-fry it for a couple of minutes too. Many thanks.

extremely curious on this. I can't find chilli chips on the channel so you may not have done them but I'd love to pick your brain again in regards to them. This old Chinese takeaway used to do chilli chips they were spicy as heck but there were no veg or chilli seeds. it was just regular looking chips. I remember it so well as when looking back at it now it baffled me as when I make my homemade chilli chips (tastes nothing like the takeaway I got them from) I use Onions, 2 Chilis, Garlic Chilli flakes & Spring onion fry it off chuck chips in toss and coat in a salt and chilli seasoning and cook it a little. They're amazing but I'm so curious if you have any idea how the Chinese place used to make chilli chips with no veg/chilli could it be the oil. Very curious. Thanks again.

I don't like using loads of oil, is it possible to use an air fryer to cook the chicken pieces? And if I wanted to veganise this, what would you recommend? I know a few Chinese takeaways near me seem to use the same stuff, I think it's crispy soy pieces that look like they're diced, so you know what they are?

Another great vid! Quick question: what is the custard for? If you don’t have custard could you swap it for something else or leave it out?
