Grand Tourer Ep4 - In this episode, Ford GT wunderkind Dan shows us the zinc plating process. Car restoration workshops everywhere would like to have this on site as reliance on commercial platers who deal in much larger items is often a long wait and costly.

Fascinating. Love to know what the clours are, availability, cost etc... have a long term dream of a small jobs resto and coatings service. You could send your part, have it cleaned and restore, wwith other coatings to keep yr raw metal, but which rinses off with a hose. Thinking mag wheels, polished alloy and suchlike. Be a good little startup I'd say.

you can buy a 5 litre tub of yellow chromate (passivate) for about 40 quid...once you buy the essentials, all you'll ever need to replace are the anodes (zinc, copper, nickel etc) and they're dirt cheap...plating doesn't need to be expensive

I have tried to do zinc plating at home with a DIY formula off the internet. It always comes out with a matte finish. Your's came out smooth and shiny. What fluid are you using to get this?

As in the video he spoke about pre-polishing (hydro blasting), and typically done DIY with 2-stage polishing wheels before ZINC application. Other factors include the source material (ZINC quality) and chemical balance of the ZINC bath.
