This movie is another good example of the pressures, problems, and competitive nature of gymnastics. It is not uncommon for things like this to happen in real life gymnastics. We can only imagine what people competing in the Olympics go through.

I like how Dana's mother is supportive even when her landing on vault is so bad. All she says is "Aww, c'mon Dana!" instead of being a b*tch to her like the coach is.

3:55 bent knees. That’s a deduction. Also, the dramatic gasping on the beam.

I looked it up; unlike the kid who played Katie, the girl who played the deaf gymnast is actually deaf and blind in one eye *and* was an elite level gymnast. They said that they chose music with simple beats for her and told her when to start. I'm guessing that she did it mostly by counting to keep on the beat.

+SnowbirdFlock Why does it matter that you're white and why did you highlight the gender of the coach?

Polarlicht Well, have you ever heard of women coaches abusing gymnasts? Probably not. Have you ever heard of man coaches abusing female gymnasts? PROBABLY! And, I said I'm white AND Canadian. Why are you unhappy that I said I'm white, but fine with me saying I'm Canadian??
@Tintenfischchen
@Tintenfischchen 8 жыл бұрын
What I've heard or not doesn't matter, because it's too subjective. But yes, I've heard of abusive female coaches, not just in gymnastics. It's the overall "all men are evil and women are always the victim and never the abuser" mentality that I criticize. The 'white' and 'MEN' just stuck out to me more than the 'Canadian'... You still didn't answer my question: Why does the colour of your skin matter?
@TheEyesOfAnAngel
@TheEyesOfAnAngel 8 жыл бұрын
Polarlicht It doesn't "matter". I'm just pointing out that we whites have the greatest love for gymnastics. Just like blacks have the greatest love for basketball. Check out my gymnastics videos & leave your comments!

A lot of athletes compete in their sport when they are ridiculously hurt and should be on the injury list. They learn to persevere through the pain.

What a hard and tragic fall for Dana at the end. This was the end of her career,sadly. Her mother couldn't accept it at first until she got the diagnosis at the hospital. Some couples or families risk almost everything in the hopes that their son or daughter will win a gold medal(s). It can become an obsession if they are not careful.

I have two comments. 1) Why are competitions in gymnastics movies often in dimly lit gyms? Seems dangerous. This isn't the only gymnastics movie in which I've noticed this (American Anthem). 2) I find it interesting that we often see Katie Bryant on the bars, stunt doubled by Vanessa Atler, when Vanessa's weakest event was always the uneven bars.

um ok folks let think about this.... she has a sign language coach to let her know when they say her name. We have already seen this coach a few times. And second deaf athletes are given other options for cues as far as music and sound goes. A deaf swimmer in the olympics was given a strobe light that would go off when the buzzer for the other swimmers went off. I'm sure it would be something close to that.

Daina's mum just had a normal reaction in the dueling process, it is called denial. The coach should always listen when a gymnast complains. It made me think of when I had a fracture in my right hand, just entering that same way in the vault. In this movie, you can see the girl did not jump in the right place, but in the middle of the board. It was like reliving my accident when I saw her slip her hands on the vault/horse and then fall. It was like a flashback!

she's not an elite gymnast, but this movie gives the right insight of how hard elite gymnasts have to work to get that far. I was an elite gymnast for a couple of years. But I had an accident on the bars :-S and broke my back.

Aimee Walker is a deaf elite gymnast IRL. She has a yt channel, Aimee Walker Pond. In one of her videos she said that one time they put on the wrong music, Dixieland Jazz instead of Carmen, but she couldn't tell and simply performed her routine - and won first place :)

She was injured, since they arrived the other girl was asking her if she was alright. She was asked that at least 4-5 times. She said she was fine most of the time and one time she answered that she was waiting for the pain medicine to kick in. Just like the girl with her wrist , she entered events with a painful injury.

Hereismytwocents2011, I know your comment is years old but I wanted to respond and say, yay, I’m glad I’m not the only one who realized that. I noticed when Katie was running down the vault runway bc Vanessa Atler had a distinct run, on beam bc they show part of her real routine and when Katie was doing her bars routine. That was always V A’s problem and you could tell it was her by the position of her feet and toes!!! When this was made she was at the top of the sport. I hate that it didn’t work out for her. She had way too much pressure on her small shoulders🥺

thanks. i've seen it. it's certainly better than this one. btw, sandra, i still think the title has very little to do with the content of this film. that would have been a better title for a movie on pageant girls. i understand what they were trying to say, but the only thing about this movie that's interesting *is* the title. :P

There would be less injuries and less accidents if the girls were allowed to rest heal and eat. Only then could the girls perform at their true best at full strength. They are not machines. Coaches are responsible for the success AND FAILURE of the athletes. Thus are responsible for any injuries the girls go through because of their guidance. I blame the coach for treating them like machines. Only survivor are able to perform though not at their best. Performing with injuries that turn into life ending injuries. Life in a brace or wheelchair or something. With good coaches athletes can reach full potential and perform at their best without risk of permanent injuries.
