Watching this after the Larry Nassar scandal and all the abuse that has now been uncovered in the world of USA gymnastics. I’m saddened about how defensive young Kristie Phillips and Betty Okino were. I feel like this interview should have been handled much better so these two young gymnasts didn’t feel all defensive. However, they were treated rough in the Karolyi gym. But back then it was normalized. I’m always impressed with Kathy Johnson. She is always so calm and wise. Bless her! I just watched an interview from June 2020 from Betty Okino (her KZbin channel) and she discusses how she realizes now that she was abused. She didn’t realize it until the Larry Nassar scandal opened her eyes. I would love to see what Kristie Phillips thinks now. She could do a lot of good in this world to educate about abuse.

Man, Oprah is truly such a terrible, disrespectful interviewer at the end the day. The older I get, the more she irks me (and I am a person who used to ADORE her when I was younger). I will never forget what she did to Mary-kate Olsen in an interview during her battle with anorexia (trust me, just look it up on here. It's ridiculous). God, she is really awful and it makes me sad that she is still elevated in our society.

ugh this show is so frustrating! did anyone in there consider the fact that maybe they loved gymnastics and that was the cause of them pushing through pain and becoming upset when they didnt win because they we self driven people not because the coach forced it upon them

I agree with Kristie, she wanted to kill herself because she trained her whole life and when it mattered most, she lost it all, and she was devistated and with Bela, she could take it not because she wanted to cut herself, because she would do whatever it takes

ur definitely right, and if women of today would be too liberal to understand abuse then they would better understand Bela's Spartan style like any other winning coaches in any competitive sports. Likewise, those who choose to go out their for fun, then hire a circus trainer, its relatively much fun than being competitive.

I have said it before and ill say it again its the parents that know wether thier children can handlethe pressure and physically and mentally..if you cannot handle the elite level conditioning then get your kid out of the gym. you already know what goes on and therefore its your fault if your little bratt cant handle it Stop living vicariously through your children!!!

It's really annoying to see everyone say that girls should not have to deal with the "abuse". I was not there for their training, however, being an elite gymnast is hard work. If you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen. They did what they had to do, to be better athletes. If you have never been a gymnast, you can't sit there and judge what other gymnasts sacrificed to get where they were going.

gosh that one lady in the audience was an idiot and it seems like everyone is trying to convince them it was the coaches fault. A coach can push you and influence you to a piont but ultimately you make your own decisions and these girls would have pushed themselves regardless of Bella

I didn't hear the author speak about the parents viewing box. The parents are watching the entire time they are in training. If they thought he was being abusive then that is the parents job to take them to another gym. Screw that woman.

Didn’t see a parents box at the camps when Martha took over. Nope, parents weren’t allowed at all and look what happened.

@Reg1214 жыл бұрын
LETMEINGUYS Not at all. But they created the perfect environment for it to happen. No parents at the camps, no cell service, very limited calls they could make to them at all. Negative environment where many have said that the only nice person there was Nassar. He took advantage of that 100%.
@LETMEINGUYS4 жыл бұрын
@@Reg121 I seriously don't think they set out to create an environment for predator. A predator sought out out for the environment.
@Reg1214 жыл бұрын
LETMEINGUYS Just because they didn’t set out to do that, doesn’t mean it didn’t end up that way. I can’t think of any other sport that cuts off parental supervision the way the Karolyi’s did with USAG. Not allowing parents access to camps, not allowing them access to their kids during major comps, including at the Olympics, etc. They cut off that protection. I always thought it was weird that during the Olympics, the only time the parents had physical access to their own kids was for a couple minutes after each competition, outside the arena. Yet they let people like Larry go into the cabins and hotel rooms unsupervised. It created unprecedented access to minors with no supervision at all. So even if they didn’t consider this loophole, they still created it. Martha even made excuses to not show up to testify in front of congress. I think it’s ironic that they ran back to Romania (this has been verified by friends of theirs and friends of Nadia’s)... They know they messed that part up. Thankfully the US/Romania has an extradition policy, so if they need them for questioning, testifying, etc., they may be able to bring them back.

This is why I hate Oprah. She bates people. There is some good information there but when it's presented in such a shrill argumentative way nobody's going to really understand it.
@skategurl110216 жыл бұрын
People just don't understand this sport.Tough love has to be enforced if you're going to make it all the way to the olympics.Thousands try but only a handful make it to the top.What seperates the champions from the others is that they're not afraid to push themselves.Oprah needs to just shut up.
