While I do have to nod consensus here, there is a certain thing that's kinda downplayed here. Zinogre's not just pulling that power from thin air here. Specifically, Zinogre is a host to a symbiotic relationship with Fulgerbugs, which themselves generate electrical charge when agitated. Thus, the conductivity of Zinogre itself helps give them a safe place to nest (shown especially well in the World version of the model, where it's horns and spines are honeycombed to allow the bugs a place to rest) and the zinogre uses the bug's electrical energy to unleash unholy hell on anything it goes after. It'll even use the bugs as projectiles as seen with it's tailswipes.
@FireLover70044 жыл бұрын
Back In MH3U I had always thought that Fulgerbugs were at first Thunder bugs that with Zinny's help turn into Fulgerbugs. You are complete correct as to the symbiotic relationship. I had on several accounts taught other hunters that you use a bug net/capture net on his back much like you could uragaan with a pickax to net you some additional mats.

You HAVE to take a look at Mizutsune from Generations and Generations Ultimate. It's name literally translates to "Water Kitsune" And Kitsune it very much is. Much like its trickster Yokai inspiration, their combat style is to mess with Hunters by having them slip and slide on soapy mucus. It's face is a direct nod to traditional kitsune masks, and even its armor is meant to look like a Fox Marriage. When it becomes Soulseer, its soap bubbles can be ghostly blue fireballs, and its scarred, blind eye glows an ominous blue from the water vapor escaping, looking like Hitodama.

hey Gaijin! loved the video! Though I do admit the information on the zinogre was crushingly vague at points. And I also saw one other connection you missed involving another monster. So to take care of both at once, Allow me to start by explaining exactly how Zinogre's electricity works! Now first thing that should be clear is that Zinogre does not produce its own electricity. While it can control lightning, it can't generate it. Instead, it borrows that electricity from another creature it has a symbiotic relationship with. Thunderbugs. Thunderbugs are those small blue lights Zinogre gathers when it charges, or what make up its orbs of electricity. Thunderbugs are in this relationship because one of Zinogre's favorite foods is a small monster called Gargwa, which is the man predator of the Thunderbug. So entire swarms of these bugs will ally themselves with a Zinogre. In exchange for its protection, the Zinogre can tap into their collective charge to enhance its abilities. As for the connection you missed? That is how the Zinogre was first introduced. In Monster hunter portable 3rd, a hunter is sent to Yukumo village because a Zinogre, a monster species that has long been ignored by the hunters guild because of its habitat, living high on mountains far away from human settlements, has suddenly moved into the surrounding regions of Yukumo and was disturbing the ecosystem around it. Well, as it turns out upon further study, the reason why this Zinogre ended up there was because it and its herd, pack, or whatever you would call it, was chased from that ancestral home by a monster called Amatus, A dragon with power over storms. So yes, in Zinogres first introduction, A storm appeared that sent it into the path of mankind and made it cause chaos in its wake.

I've been with the series since MH Tri on the Wii. Zinogre is a favorite of mine but my thoughts on the monsters have all improved due to Monster Hunter Stories if I'm going to be honest. Having a group of monsters you ride and work with. Made me fall in love with Lagombi as he is the best bun in gaming to me now. Despite it's balancing issues and the final boss being a bit of a pain, I highly suggest giving it a go still because just having them as a pet like having a pokemon before having the Pokemon Refresh or Camp or Amie where you traveled and fought with it, it really makes you take the thoughts of a monster you may not have liked and find them more fun an interesting. I now got respect for every monster in Stories as I went around to find and hatch each of them for my team that I could in the NA version of the game. Riding a Zinogre is so much fun, as is riding just about any monster. :D But beside that rambling, I've been on a Monster Hunter kick since World first came out on PS4 2 years ago on the 26th of Jan which was a wonderful BDay present for me. :)

Another interesting connection between zinoger and raiju becoming aggressive only during storms. In the game he was introduced in Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, In the story of the game zinogers we native to the highest areas of the misty peaks, but they are driven out of their natural habitat and are sited dangerously close to Yukumo village. The thing that agitated them and drove them out was Amatsu, an elder dragon that is always followed by a hurricane like storm. The blue and white thunder wolves were agitated by a powerful storm.

Also this video made me fall way more in love with Zinogre it's been one of the many monsters that I would want to own irl (plus Zinogre's variations) because I love creatures that are based off folk lore and the elements.
@Castersvarog4 жыл бұрын
To answer that question at the end; it feels like a bit of both. It clearly has roots in the Raiju but it's got something really unique about it. It's lightning isn't 100% natural lightning from their lightning organ, rather it comes from its relationship with little bugs called Thunderbugs. Alone they won't cause anything more then a static shock but together they effectively become a living Ball Lightning. Zinogre takes that up to eleven, thousands of those little guys nest within the spikes on it's back and help the Zinogre get it's legendary charge. There's also two other variations of Zinogre: the Stygian Zinogre Subspecies which has a relationship with a different insect known as Dracophage Bugs which are insects that eat Dragonfell berries. With scales Black and Red Dragon element Lightning it's got a greater resemblance with Hell hounds then Raiju and is a veritable Dragonslayer. Then there's the ThunderLord Zinogre. A Zinogre Deviant that's in a constant max-charge State thanks to it's abnormally large Thunder Organ. But it can go even farther beyond into an 'ultracharged' state. Where it glows a magnificent gold. The Thunderlord is to Raijin what Regular Zinogre is to Raiju. It's able to go toe to toe with Elder dragons, veritable gods, and live.

It's worth noting that here in BC, most summers, we have just as much fear of lightning as the pre-industrial Japanese would have. We get major forest fire issues, and lightning storms can spark several hundred fires apiece. Sure, they start small and a lot of them get put out before they amount to anything to worry about, but with hundreds strewn about the province, there's definitely ones that fire fighters aren't getting to in time.
@LunaProtege4 жыл бұрын
I imagine a post industrial interpretation of the raiju would probably make them a lot more tame and... Well... Useful. Imagine people taking stray that are starting to get a bit restless out to an arena surrounded by lightning rods to vent their frustrations in what's essentially ritual combat with each other... and this would power a city for a while, and calm the raiju. The sight of them fighting would also draw an interested crowd. ... I feel like I just described Pokemon.
@Sparking_Ram3 жыл бұрын
Something else to note is that in previous games Zinogre was very composed. Not even roaring upon spotting a Hunter, they'd literally roll there neck as like they just accepted a challenge, starting with attacks that seem almost practiced and uniform. But as the fight went on they become more electrified and lose that composure, they begin swelling with anger and they start losing that uniformity. They begin attacking more recklessly and eventually resort to charging themselves up. When even that proves to be not enough to take down the hunter is when they really lose it. All sense of practiced movements and composure are gone, it finally lets out a beastial roar as it falls into a deep feral rage and it's only goal is to kill you.

I know it's not particularly engaging for some people, but I think I have to say this, given the subject of this channel. Dungeons and Dragons (commonly abbreviated D&D), the oldest known Tabletop Role-Playing Game, draws on creatures and monsters from all over world culture and mythology. Yes, the game has a lot of monsters that seem to draw inspiration from all over the place (Mind Flayers and Beholders from Eldritch horror, as was made very much its own genre thanks to the works HP Lovecraft) but far more of the monsters in the game are practically pulled straight out of world mythology and written in such a way that they are their own unique creatures in the game but also have callbacks to the lore that they came from. Oni are monsters that actually exist in the game, and their depiction in the source material might surprise you. Yes, the format for almost all the monsters has been shaped by their depiction in the Fantasy genre (for crying out loud, Kobolds are humanoid lizards the size of gnomes, not their classical depiction as fey). And the game has monsters that really aren't found anywhere else, other than stories that take place in cannon D&D worlds seem wholly unique but I'm sure some digging by the right people can find their cultural origins. I said all this because of something that has been overlooked in this series, the tabletop scene. Yes, you mention a few collectible card games every now and then when they relate to whatever creature you're talking about, but I have yet to see this series talk about or mention creatures that exist in tabletop RPGs. Like I said, the Oni is a monster in D&D but you have yet to talk about the depiction of the Oni in D&D. And you missed out on an opportunity to talk about how goblins are referenced in D&D's source materials in your goblin video. I'm pretty sure animated objects are found in all cultures, so that kind of breakdown would be a bit tricky. But if the monster known as the Behir (page 25 of the 5E Monster Manual) has any yokai inspirations, you're missing out on that study, not mention the different types of dragons found in the official source materials of the game. A race called the Dragonborn are found in the Player's Handbook for you to actually play, half-dragons have a stat-block, and there's plenty more in the Monster Manual and other source materials you could look at for a potential cultural breakdown. My point is, you've gone through a lot of video games and television series, but you don't seem to have gone through something a bit less electronically inclined in its origins that has now made a surprisingly good transition to the way our world works now. My point is, you might find some things to talk about in places like tabletop RPG sourcebooks, even if there probably aren't as many visual aides for it all if you would like. But as I said before, D&D is already on its 5th edition, that means it's come a long way from the source materials that were written up for folks in 1974, and each of the editions has some different takes came before, so there might be more visual aides that you thought, just not as many that move as you would probably like.

I fell for the Zinogre the moment I saw how powerful it is. It is such a cool beast: charges electricity, goes Super Saiyan 2, moves so fast you can barely catch up, has all mighty attacks that can one shot you, looks and sounds like a wolf god, is respected by all monsters no matter the size. I love the Zinogre

I'd somehow never really heard of Raiju before, but now I think I have a new favorite yokai. Although I also can't help but picture them breakdancing to style on fools.
@ProfessionalNamielleLewder694 жыл бұрын
Also, you mentioned the Raiju becoming aggressive during storms. Here's the thing with Zinogre back in its debut game: They originally had a specific home in Portable 3rd, the Misty Peaks. However, the Elder Dragon Amatsumagatsuchi descended on their territory and forced them out of their habitat, which caused Zinogres to often wander into human settlements and cause destruction. Amatsumagatsuchi itself is known as the Storm Dragon, whose mere presence causes powerful hurricanes.

Recently in my D&D group's Curse of Strahd campaign, one of our players ended up befriending what I think might be a raiju. Earlier in the campaign, our rogue had come across a spyglass which, unbeknownst to the other party members, contained an entity inside it with some control over the weather. In a recent battle, the rogue broke the spyglass, releasing the entity which turned out to be a cat-like lightning creature. While my bard didn't roll high enough on her Arcana roll to determine what exactly it is, she was able to tell that it's chaotic in nature, and either a kind of demon or fey, so out of game, I'm predicting it's a raiju until proven otherwise.

Since I haven't seen any one comment this yet, The only reason that the guild found out about zinogre was when amatsu, a giant dragon capable of creating massive rainstorms on demand, drove the zinogre from their natural dwellings and into areas near villages, specifically yukumo village

I didn't know about raiju becoming enraged by storms. Suddenly the species' known rivalry with Amatsu makes even more sense.

Don't know if this count as a reference,but Zinogre's very first appearence was in Monster Hunter Tri G for the PSP,it was exclusive to japan,and that game had more references to japan,like Yukumo Village and the Misty Peaks

Whoa! That is one crazy lightning wolf thing. I have limited to no familiarity with Monster Hunter and I pronounced the name "ZinOGRE" on first sight. Wyverns are similar to Western dragons from what I understand, but they tend to deal in lightning, ice, and other weather related elements whereas dragons are predominantly Earth and/or fire. There are water dragons, but they tend to be confused with/uncermoniously thrown together with sea serpents and other giant sea monsters.

Gaijin now how about Hrshvlger? Also culture shock on the Bosses from Megaman Zero and ZX series due to the collection coming out next month.

I will note here that the Lightning Zinorge has it not its own, it gains it through the Fulgur Bugs that nest on its back. When Zinogre charges, it's attracting or i guess you could say calling Fulgur Bugs to it. Also the lightning orbs it launches at you are a cluster of Fulgur Bugs.

First off, great video. Zinogre is one of my favorite monsters in MH, definitely top 3 along with Glavenus and Kushala Daora. Second, kudos to you for acknowledging the fact you’ve been mispronouncing the name, and have been trying to correct it.

A little bonus about Zinogre's tier 3 rage. Zinogre if angered during tier 2 charge will enter tier 3. In tier 3, it summons thunderstorms, its back slam drops a huge thunder down, and worst of all... Unless you stagger this ball of rage, it's gonna stay that way.
@samaeltheangel34344 жыл бұрын
Zinogre doesn't generate electricity by itself. His howls call for FulgurBugs that nestle in it's back scales which are like honeycombs. Those balls of lightning are actually swarms of FulgurBugs. Also you could have mentioned Stygian Zinogre, which his name literally means "of the Styx river", hell wolf. But overall a very well made and interesting video. And don't stress about the name, many monster names have different pronunciations depending on the person. Some say Tie-Grex, others say Tig-Rex. Some say Nerji-Gante, other Nergi-Gante. Some say Glave-anos, others say Glav-anos. Could be cool to see you talk about other monsters, like Narga and his relation to Shinobi, or Namielle and his deep sea inspirations.

Did you notice that there are no monster birds in Monster Hunter? Weird; isn’t it? And there definitely would be folkloric precedents for it, like the giant bird Roc or the Zuggeist, a giant bird half eagle and half vulture on the Zugspitze in Southern Bavaria who is linked to the mountain’s spirits of lightning and wind. Wouldn’t both fit perfectly into Monster Hunter?
