The main reason they made them with the 'black crackle' finish was to prevent corrosion of the case of the lighter. During the war brass was not available to zippo neither was nickel or chrome which would would have been used to finish the outside of the lighters. The only metal Blaisdale and his workers had access to was very low grade non stainless steel and any lighters that were bought before he started finishing them with the crackling paint could be sent back and refinished.

I thought it was during D-Day making it black to make it non reflective so not to give away the position of the paratroopers but I could be wrong

From what I know the original ‘41 was still made of brass and they didn’t go to the steel cases until ‘42 ….

This is a little late but I also have a story about this Zippo. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour in 1941, America knew they had a war with Japan. Because of the production of ammonition and guns, brass was used for military. Zippo couldnt finish their lighters because they had no brass. So they invented a Zippo with a black colour finish, which had a „crackle“ texture. Also, normal Zippos would roast because of the Salt Water. The Black Crackle Zippo doesnt.

Is it just me or do newer Zippos, especially those with a matte/crackle finish have lids that aren't flush with the body, there is always a little gap for fuel to evaporate from...

They need to paint the bottom with crackle like the originals also the insert should be dull to mimic the anodizing they did to the steel on the originals. If Zippo would do those two things I would buy one right away. Might not seem like a big deal but those are two major details that made them even more unique then any other 41's

What a pity they have changed the stamp on the base as 1941 replica! In place of the pat number? I'm not sure what year this happened, though?? I have a 2020 and that still has the numbers!

Does anyone know (exactly, like really specifically exactly) things are different in this replica than the original ones from ‘41? I’m mainly thinking about the materials this is made out of and how it’s made compared to how they made them back in the day originally. Also, what was the reason they removed the two holes in the chimney? Was there a good reason for this?
@waltz92304 жыл бұрын
Zippo Fanatic 77 Do you know if the black crackle you got (the replica) has the black crackle coating to actually prevent rusting/corrosion like in the old days or is it just a modern stainless zippo with that finish to look like the old one? Cheers!!
