It's worth noting that William brought Barbara Barnes out of retirement to care for George for his first six months. That's a testament to love for his own, and Harry's, nanny.

We knew he loved Baba and was broken hearted when Diana got rid of her. In an establishment the size of buckingham palace having hundreds of staff impissible to keep things quiet. Too many 'press people pop in for tidbits of gossip.

I was appalled by that when I learned about it, imagine breaking your own beloved sons heart because you’re jealous of his relationship with the nanny, who seems to have done nothing worse than try to protect William and Harry from seeing their warring parents fight with each other. Diana just wasn’t the saint she’s been painted, what’s the poem? “When she was good she was very good but when she was bad, she was awful “

One thing that stood out to me was the information that the staff at Althorpe got the money together to buy a swimming pool for Diana ( no cost to the RF), then they used the army to excavate the land and build the pool (no cost to the RF); so in essence Harry is just continuing the grift.

But Diana had no worldly experiences at all and was hopelessly naive, and had an idealistic view of Charles and marriage. And she was married off to a man who was in love with someone else. So much so that Camilla would cruelly have parties at Highgrove where she would invite friends and a few journalists and they would spend the evening making fun of Diana behind her back. Refer to Penny Juror on this as she was there and wrote about it.

This was my favorite chapter so far. It is so sad that Princess Diana was always so wary of people who she thought may have been conspiring against her, especially those who disagreed with the way in which she chose to raise her sons and bring some modernity to the strict ways of royal protocol. I will always believe that her decision to forgo royal security contributed to her death, since a trained royal protection officer (Ken Wharf) has stated that he and his colleagues would have never allowed her to be whisked off in a speeding car without a seat belt and chased by paparazzi with a driver under the influence. We can never know what could have been had she lived a longer life, but lessons have been learned from her tragic fate, and it is lovely to see the way in which Prince William cherishes and protects his family.

Thank you for another highly informative and entertaining "library hour" Shauna. What struck me is how all of these books written decades ago (and many now out of print and very hard to hunt down), expose aspects of Diana's significant personality disorder! She was absolutely adored by millions, in fact I'd go so far as to say 'venerated by millions' but I always felt there was something deeply damaged about her. Those insights have been confirmed repeatedly since her death and mostly, in ways that reflect an onging acceptance and affection for the person notwithstanding the spite and the damage she did to their reputations and careers.

@@NakaidaBeauzec I don't think the family knew much about her 'troubled state of mind' before she married the heir to the Throne. Her former schoolmates did and those she'd shared boarding school accommodation with, but which of those would dare to approach the Royal Family and warn them? The staff at Althorp clearly felt very sorry for her as a result of her parents issues and her mother's abandonment...but her older sisters didn't behave the way she and her brother Charles have done. Diana clearly thought that once married to the then Prince Charles, she would be able to force him to do what she wanted, which seemed to parallel one of her step-grandmother's ridiculous romantic novels that she used to devour as a teenager....he only took so much then pulled down the shutters and that was that! The descriptions of her 'in-house' manipulations only began to come out after they separated and former and current staff felt safer talking about their experiences.

This book is so much fun! So much gossip from beginning to end! I couldn’t put it down! Shauna, I’m currently reading “Shadows of a Princess” by PD Jephson. He started as Diana’s equerry, and was later her private secretary. There is CONSIDERABLE insight into Diana’s personality and behavior. It’s pretty juicy at times. It’s not a fun, quick read though. But he seems to treat her fairly. He’s analytical and psychological in his approach. Not sure this is a book for your channel or not, but certainly worth reading. Thanks for another great video!

This book, with The Housekeeper’s Diary, confirms that King Charles was a good father. He called Harry ‘darling boy’ because they were close. So it must be really devastating for KC to see what Harry has done. And I can understand why he has not acted against Harry the way people want him to. It must be very difficult for KC as a father who loved Harry very much. And now, with his illness and other more pressing responsibilities, I can see why he does not want to trigger a public fight with Harry. For his own mental and physical health, he cannot afford to. I personally think it is terribly unfair for people like Tom Bower to criticize KC and label him as weak.
@fibanocci314

Agreed! I also think the same people are giving H and M too much credit for the ability to harm the royal family if left alone and not enough credit to the harm that could be done by doing something that could be perceived as unfair treatment. I have to think he's still hoping Harry will come to his senses and he's worried that burning the bridges completely will make him stay away.

If Harry could just pick up a few books and have a few real conversations with people in the know (like family), he wouldn’t have to deify his mother and could learn to love her anyway. Warts and all. Then, he could learn to love himself. Warts and all. This constant striving to be perfect is not just exhausting us. It’s breaking him down too.

According to Lady Anne Glenconnerr, Barbara Barnes (William and Harry's nanny) ,said "Harry was born mad". The reason Anne would know is because Barbara Barnes was Anne's nanny when she recommended her to Diana. Lady Anne was a royal insider, having been Lady in Waiting to Princess Margaret and her best friend since childhood..Anne was also one of the Elizabeth's attendants at the Queen's coronation. In an interview, she shared that she asked Charles, over a friendly informal supper,, to please invite her to his own coronation. I wonder, did he or didn't he? Lady G is a DELIGHTFUL character in her nineties now and she just released her second book,, "What Comes Next?" She wrote her first book, "Lady in Waiting" in her eighties and it was a delightful read! Highly recommend.

Different perspectives, someone who dealt with the child first-hand day in and day out (I believe that quote is said to have originated with the nanny Barbara Barnes) versus someone who occasionally interacts with the child and mostly hears information filtered through a doting father. @LeeDon76 No it wasn't, it wasn't the 19th century. I was 11 at the time. On the day of the engagement , my entire family were talking about how she was too young. They did realise it was hard to find a contemporary of Prince Charles who wouldn't be torn apart by the press for having had a life. It was the press and the public who were judgmental. They still are, the family have to act so as not to encourage censure. They then get blamed for being stuffy.

@@nightingale22Your family may have thought she was too young, perhaps because of what she was taking on, being the wife of the future King, but marrying at that age was common. (I was a few years older than Diana) I was a uni student, privileged background, not pregnant and married at 19 - married for 58 years. Most everyone I knew were married young. My husband was 21. At the latest, girls married the week after they graduated uni. By 25 you were considered to be an older bride.

I need to get this book. There’s a book I’m desperately trying to find that I know for a fact is PACKED SOLID with juicy royal gossip and perhaps a bit taboo attractions in those pages….. it’s a book about a royal courtier (i think) named Lord Esher. iIt’s way before QEII’s reign and I think more around the time of her grandfather George V. I remember reading a small review online of someone who read it years ago and said it was one of the most scandalous books they ever read about the royal institution as a whole! I’d love to get my hands on that one !

Placid or sulky or are they being polite and saying they couldn't quite put their finger on what was going on with him... Poor old Harry. Thank you Shauna. Such a great book and your commentary does it justice. I'm afraid I have to side with the yeoman. He wasn't young so must have witnessed plenty of goings-on and wanted to establish the boundaries. It seems to me that most of the royals are friendly when it suits them or when they are feeling needy but have absolutely no qualms or conscience about berating or humiliating the help whenever they feel like it. The staff have to put up with it in silence even if they don't deserve to be shouted at. He was perfectly right to defend his space, having seen his fair share of nonsense. That's my impression anyway, which is not to say that the staff were ever blameless, but the pervading sense of entitlement is very annoying

Well, if the actress is the correct female mentioned in the book, there would have been no marraige with Charles. She had a son with John Huston (American director & screenwriter) in the early 1960's. Mr Huston was married to another when the child was born. The palace would have imploded if Prince Charles had even mentioned marrying a young woman with a son born out of wedlock to Hollywood Royalty The year 1979 was right on the heels of, the then Prince Charles beginning to date Diana Spencer.... Perhaps ''whatever love means...'' meant someone else altogether. It isn't easy to get a stubborn man to give up hunting , fishing & to become a vegetarian. 😮

The way Diana would get it in her head that people didn't like her and that is why she would shut people out sounds very much like someone with borderline personality disorder. I have very close family members who are like that, it's is so sad and devastating for them and the people they shut out. They also have so high expectations from people and when they don't meet those expectations, disappoint them in any way the get so mad but it's mostly internally but can sometimes come out in a nasty, cruel way. Borderline personality disorder is a cluster B personality disorder like Narcisstic personality disorder and often they overlap so someone with BPD can have high traits of NPD. The people that I know with BPD can be so kind and caring and empathetic in more ways than most other people are but to the people that are close to them that they feel have done something to them it's like all that empathy just gets shut down.
