Are we not gonna talk about how Lea only took a single breath for that last phrase "But only on my own" with full vibrato? She is one of the best vocalists in the world.
@ZoeStibiVocalCoach3 жыл бұрын
She is fab. I would expect a singer to not breathe on that last phrase. Vibrato is created by the sympathetic vibrations of the last layer on the vocal fold. It creates the harmonics which we hear as vibration as well as the oscillation of the note due to the relaxation of the muscles within the larynx. It isn't caused by breath pressue 🙃
@leesplendor3 жыл бұрын
@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach I saw a lot of singers who sung that last phrase with more than one breath. I think it's because they just finished the big belt on the "known". And thank you for sharing knowledge with me 😊 I have a problem with singing the last phrase too. I can sing it with just one breath but if I add vibrato like she did, I will run out of breath more quickly and cannot finish the phrase without a second breath. Do you have any advice for me please?
@ZoeStibiVocalCoach3 жыл бұрын
@@leesplendor it sounds as if you are singing it a little breathy. If you take the breath out you will be able to sing for longer. Practice it a little louder and then reduce the volume without allowing the vocal folds to open and have the breath come through. 🥰 Let me know how you get on!

She used her beautiful mixed voice on the climax part of the song: "I've only been pretending" and on the "known". It still sounded powerful though. A normal person could mistake it for a belt.

This was my first introduction to Lea Salonga, back in 95, when I first saw this performance. Just wonderful. Just as an aside - with regard to vibrato ... yes, the story is a crucial part of musical theatre, but for many Musical Theatre fans, the music (and the voices) are the main ingredient (which is why the Les Mis movie was a big letdown). So for me - I love a good vibrato, and which is why I've always said, that out of all the original cast, Michael Ball's use of vibrato is truly out of this world. In fact every time I hear someone new take on the role of Marius I always end up disappointed when there is no vibrato at the parts I expect it to appear. I am so versed in Michael Ball's Marius, that I expect it every time - LOL :-)
@tthings66863 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more. In fact I think it is inaccurate to say that vibrato has been added especially in Lea's case.. Many voices have natural vibrato and make the artistic choice to straighten it out in musical theater pieces.

The vibrato adds the emotion needed, and you still tend to listen to the words, because she has an impeccable delivery. If she sang those lines flat, the song would come off flat. It's the reason there wasn't a dry eye in that theater after that performance.
@ZoeStibiVocalCoach2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bien, I am not sure I agree with you there, I think That is just the way she sings and we accept it that way. I don't think the song would have sounded flat all if the vabrato was less. However when I am teaching new musical theatre singers, I teach vibrato as a colouring tool not as a blanket vocal quality 😉

It's LAY-uh Salonga (not LEE-uh). I highly recommend more Lea reactions! Since you are a musical theater fan, I'll start with some musical theater recommendations: --Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "Movie In My Mind" from MISS SAIGON 25th Anniversary (2014): kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIjcpGuohp14jqs --Lea and Regine Velasquez musical medley from April 2020 (Lea recorded her part first and then Regine recorded hers for Regine's online concert. Apologies for the bubbles that were added to avoid copyright issues): kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZq0hGOenNeIiM0 --Lea singing "I Dreamed a Dream" from LES MISERABLES 25th Anniversary concert in 2010 (Lea did replace as Fantine in the Broadway revival in 2007): kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXnHpaqBeKytkLc --Lea and Simon Bowman singing "Last Night of the World" from the London Palladium in 1990, in the 'Gala Night of 100 Stars' (probably about a year into the original London run of MISS SAIGON): kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWSnmpamp7eWrqc --Lea rehearsing "Still Hurting" from THE LAST FIVE YEARS (part of a concert she did in 2013, I think): kzbin.info/www/bejne/roS8pY2IgquisMU For those who don't already know, Lea started performing in her home country of the Philippines at age 7 (in THE KING AND I) and had her first lead role at age 9 in ANNIE. Lea's first album was released at age 10 (and was certified gold). She hosted a musical tv show with her brother called "Love, Lea" from ages 12-14. Until Lea was 17 years old she did theater, concerts, film, tv and albums. She was a freshman in college (still 17) when she auditioned for MISS SAIGON, 18 when MISS SAIGON opened in London, 19 when she won the Olivier, and 20 when MISS SAIGON opened on Broadway and she won the Tony (first Asian actress to win one), Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World Awards. Lea has the distinction of being the singing voice of two Disney princesses: Jasmine and Mulan. Of course, there are a lot more credits since she hasn't really stopped working and she turned 51 earlier this year! More trivia: --Lea had led a very sheltered life growing up and had never had a boyfriend before doing MISS SAIGON, so her first kiss was with her leading man Simon Bowman. (Check out their chemistry - so amazing! And then you can find video of them singing together again in 2018 at her 40th anniversary concert - still fantastic.) --I believe Lea is one of the few people to be part of the 10th and 25th anniversary LES MISERABLES concerts and I think the only one to play two different roles.
