This is a cult classic of French exploitation! Apparently, they had to film it with a defective camera that filmed at irregular speeds, so the actors had to play either a little fast or a little slow to compensate. Also, they hired local actors with very heavy local accents, making some lines of dialogue completely unintelligible to most French speakers (during the mob scene, an actor sounds like he exclaims the meaningless word "Promizoulin!", which became a cult line to French-speaking aficionados of the genre). Actor Howard Vernon, a Jess Franco regular, apparently later said that they might as well have skipped shooting this with film, and just straight-up use toilet paper in the camera instead. Now if *that's* not a resounding endorsement, I don't know what is! Great video as always, Cecil--I'm very happy you covered this one!

Oh my God. You did Zombie Lake. I went to a small college prep high school. We lived on campus, and our professors did too. They were in charge of us. On weekends they would always show a double feature movie in the auditorium. If the professor who had duty that weekend did not want to stay up and show the second movie, they would always put on Zombie Lake thinking no one would stay to watch. BUT we all came to love this terrible movie and would always stay until the end just to mess with the tired professor. There is T&A, but it is such a terrible movie it didn't matter. I think about a very simple time in life when I think about Zombie Lake.

Ackchyually, the Wehrmacht weren't part of the Nazi Party. Case in point, Hugo Stiglitz (the character, not the actor). Still, they did wear the insignia. 8:35 Well, that's an interesting twist. Ironic when you consider how often people use the term "zombie apocalypse" (which is a misnomer). 8:39 That's not what "Apocalypse" means, especially when it's capitalized. In the original Greek, it means "Revelation." The original definitions of words should always override their common (mis)usage. See also "Armageddon" which specifically means "war at Megiddo" (which means the movie 'Armageddon' has less than nothing to do with Armageddon).

I will say this. Growing up, and seeing the wizard video box art for these films in the horror section, I was scared s*******. The artwork is so much better than the actual films. In fact, I think I just wanted to see those films simply because I was fascinated with the box art. I eventually saw condensed versions of these two films in wizard videos zombie-thon compilation. Believe it came out about 1984 or 1985, and it had quite a few 5 to 10 minutes segments of the living Dead films. Essentially, each one was just all the really good parts of each film, whether it be the nudity or the gore.

Les Raisins de la Mort remains Rollin's best work in my opinion, yet it has no real lesbian vampires. It does have the OTHER infamous Rolling trope - nude Brigitte Lahaie. Also, Rollin ended up doing adult movies in the 80's under various pseudonyms to make money after offers for regular ones started slowing down. Some friends of mine saw him at Montreal's Fantasia Festival a few years before his death and he didn't appreciate the questions about directing adult movies.

At 3:31, apparently that totally-not-a-xenomorph gargoyle was added to a Scottish abbey in the '90s during some restoration work where several of the gargoyles were replaced. I guess the filmmakers got some b-roll there and either recognised it and wanted in on the joke or just thought it looked weird and wanted it in their picture.
