Richtofen brainwashed the other three protagonists, giving them false memories and names, and uses them to sabotage Maxis's plans to destroy the world. They could've used the fireworks as weapons. With some luck it sets the ground or the zombie struck on fire, which would kill the targeted zombie and likely a bunch of others in the horde. Not to mention that the loud noise and shiny bright lights should distract the zombies even if it's for only a few moments which should make it easier to hit them.
