(EDIT) Confirmed still works in Alpha 21. And if you want to see this base take on max gamestage horde, but built entirely of wood - check out kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6WnnWmLppKBjNU ---- Going beyond just the SMG turrets, if you're into trap bases, this has serious potential when you add blade traps, dart traps firing down the rows, and shotgun turrets around the outside of the stairway. Absolute carnage! And if you're wondering - the cop spit in the second horde was because I was standing on top of the base - once the smg turrets took a couple of hits I ducked back inside - breaking line of sight and stopping the spit.

I would think some electric fences would give you a spot you can barrel down on them for some kills, or shooting at them once they fall. Great idea and video!

Have this, but go up a few more times around, and then at the last bit have those floating blocks that have openings ring around the inside area. That way, when they fall, gravity does the work. And, in case any comes to the last leg of the journey, have two to three pushing turrets to move them off. To get in the base easily use that door trick to remove the path.

I moved the steps they jump on in the middle of the walkway versus the edge and when they fall they fall on the walkway and won’t get upset and bang on the walkway. The 39x41 AFK base worked first horde. I also have a water moat surrounding the base which seems to prevent any off chance of banging on base. Put an escape arch on each corner for zeds. Thanks again for the original design :)

This is a very fascinating idea! I might try this... I'm currently playing war of the walkers and I made my base focused on kill zones with all of my soldiers facing a single long walkway. This would do very well with that mod and a lot of soldiers. Cool idea for a video. Great job

That's pretty cool. I like being able to see all of the zombies running around the whole place. I think for a real playthrough, I might want it smaller so they are closer to shoot, though I read your comment about advantages to distance. And speaking of which, I'm guessing the damage to the stairs is from you missing a few times and shooting it yourself.

Yeah if you bring it inside 11 blocks the sombies will sometimes rage mode while running around the outside and attack the block they are standing on. Not the end of the world, but annoying. And yes, damage from my own inaccuracy is a constant issue :D There's a cheaper build approach for this base coming in my next video too.

To protect in case you do lose one of those up and down block sections is to have it come from the other side as well, but use that two block gap with a door trick so that you can activate a different pathway by closing the door if you need to.

I built this base of yours and it works fantastic. The comments I have are 1) Start with only two lines of wall, then add the third later. That way you can upgrade to concrete throughout the wall which will become important later on when demolition men are introduced 2) You have to stay within the 5 x 5 center tower area or the zeds will start attacking the outside wall closest to where you are standing and may even attack the tower directly under you 3) Definitely put some metal spikes on the roof of the tower until you can add a MG or shotgun turret 4) You're going to go through a crap ton of ammo if you try using it as a fighting base on horde night. Make sure you have storage containers full of ammo.

While waiting for the next alpha to drop, these builds make for some fun times and experimenting. Plus, you can never have enough SMG turrets. Some 1812 in there as well, great video.

The thing you didn't mention was "destry area" mode. I've heard it applies when they take fall damage, but I swear I thought I had also heard that it can happen when their pathing resets due to a fall. This base idea is great because if they do manage to go into "destroy area" after falling, there isn't anything nearby that they can try to hit.

Hey Briana - destroy area is always an issue as you say, but with this design it should be minimised through the lack of things to hit as you say, but also by keeping the zombies at all times more than 11 blocks away from you (through the height of the tower, and the distance of the stairs from the tower). instead of the arch, you could put a couple blocks on the inside as stairs so they can get back up if you don't want the arch there.

I lead them up higher on a staircase, then the zombies drop for fall damage onto 4 rows of spikes interspaced with lit fireplaces and water pits. rinse repeat as you have done

Great video!! You could save some blocks by also leaving the middle hollow along with the 3x3 blocks as a base and/or sides in the taller portions of the pathway (or just use them in the middle of the path upright). I also thought you could put a single small pillbox at the end of your elevated walkway so you could shoot at them toward the beginning stairs. That would allow you to shoot at them closer and lined up potentially. Might require another pillar for support, not sure. Edit: subscribed

Thanks for the sub - and agree on reducing the block count - I ended up doing that in the screamer farming vid where I used an existing POI fence instead! The pill box is a good idea, just need to watch the range - to make sure it doesn't go within the 11 blocks that causes rage mode!

You guys are getting closer and closer. I make and pioneered the zombie muncher that’s the premise continue in a loop. Plus I pioneered 100% floating blocks, 4 off the ground or up in the sky and it’s glitched as it’s not connected to the ground. And to answers your question yes , yes it is that broken of a game. I can literally do as I please on that game. I’m currently terraforming a whole random gen. HINT zombies can’t spawn out of fertilizer once the ground is upgraded. I spent 3 months 18 hrs a day playing the game. So yea I know every trick in the book bc it’s my book lol

Alpha 21 buffed the block damage of all Zeds quite a lot now, with bigger ones doing massive amounts like the cop zombies melee hitting for a big chunk. It would be handy to use water for anti-rage mechanism, and using special blocks that function as 'forcefield' blocks and to make them trip or fall. Would be interesting if you can make it very very compact so they loop in a small space, but using a lot of 'jumping' blocks to force them to slow down, as well as a lot of water (especially if you build it underwater).

I'm working on some water related content, it's not quite ready, but there's some ideas in there that can hopefully make some interesting videos! Not sure though when you say that block damage has been buffed - I just did a quick skim of the items.xml and the block damage for cops and demos are still the same as A20 from what I can see - unless there's extra mechanics affecting it! The base damage is unchanged though - Cop:100, Feral/RadCop:200, Demo:500. I'm no modder though, so I could well be missing something!

@@CautiousPancake I play on one of my worlds with 25% AI block damage and they bust down wooden doors somewhat decently at 1/4th the rate, and it's not cops. If it was at 100% they'd bring it down in seconds. I think biome tiering might be affecting their stats maybe? Or maybe feral versions is the reason why they hit so hard, since I reduced the speed of the zeds slightly so it's harder to notice a feral unless you see their glowing eyes.

Perimeter size? Is it possible to do 39x39 for the outside perimeter and have a 11x11 interior base ? I wasn’t sure if the zeds would still continue to go the loop with it being so large…

I did a test this morning on a 10x9 inside base (as I happened to have one that I could re-use). Ran fine, just a little agro on the wall after falling from the drop, despite being out of rage mode, but nothing significant. If you were unsure - put a tunnel in the wall furthest across the square in the diagonal direction from the stairs at the start. That way if they need to cut through the middle they can. Just make sure your tower is at least 12 blocks up.

Spiders are ok if you're out of line of sight - you can see a radiated one briefly running around like the rest in the outro, but if you show your face at the hatch or on the roof, yeah they are going to jump at you (and hopefully get shot down mid-air that would be cool :)

i just uploaded a vid on a mostly afk base in a barn if u wanna see it.. just requires putting a pole and a staircase.. (also add a plate wall in front to avoid cop spit which i didnt do cos i wasnt in a horde night when recording it)

also, talking of taking pot shots.. whats the best block u could make a base out of where they are still classed as full blocks for walking on and full hp blocks but that can be shot thru? i feel like u could make the base out of a block like that so u dont damage ur own base from shooting.. for example there is a block that is a cube but looks like a frame with cross bars on it.. can it be shot thru? one thing i find annoying is having to repair my own base due to my own guns damaging blocks.. which is why i often use pois now and do very little changes to them.. i use the poi for 1-3 horde nights and then move on to another one and dont need to repair anything

How large of a square outter perimeter(run way for zeds) and the inner square can you have for this to work? I want a larger base than 5x5

Not sure where the limit would be that stops the base working - I suspect it would only happen once the zombies are so far away from the stairs that they don't want to run all the way around - you might need to poke some holes to allow them an easier pass through the outside ring. Having said that - I found an old test base that was 10x9 on the inside base - and with the outer ring still 12 blocks away from all the walls, it worked fine. There was a little beating on walls despite being outside rage mode for the ones that fell inside the ring from the dropper, but this wasn't significant and easily repaired for concrete.

Hi Pancake. I am currently using one of your "cheese" drop bases in my current game LOL. Thank you for that! Got a question though. Have you done a study of the explosion distance on cops and demolishers? The reason I ask is, on my drop base, I added dart traps in the zombie landing zone that shot upward. If a cop exploded, how far down would the trap need to be to avoid getting hit by the blast?

Hey PurpleDude! I've not done an explosion vid - possibly not a bad one to add to the board! From memory the explosion radius is 5 for both, but I'm not sure that in practice the explosion travels that far, which is the part that would need testing. So to answer your question make the dart trap the 6th block from ground level to be most safe and fill the space with blocks that can be shot through. That would be the ultra safe approach, but I feel like it's over the top and you could get away with a smaller gap.

My central pillar aka base is 11 blocks away from the loop to prevent rage. If I add 1 block around the base to give it a buffer to prevent spit damage will that cause the rage to kick in? I wasn’t sure since the player will still be 11 away since the added block is outside. Any idea?

Yeah, as long as you stay 11 blocks away - having the loop is there is fine and filling other blocks in the way is fine, as long as the area you stand/walk on doesn't go under 11 blocks. It's not the end of the world if you do, you'll just get a little more dmg on the blocks.

Hey cautious pancake, I was doing this afk base along with a banshee queen mod which adds a screamer queen to bloodmoons. She was able to cross the half tiles that normal zeds fall down. Her mass is larger so she is taller and wider. Even changing some full blocks to the half didn’t deter her. Any ideas? *update* the wedge trick #10 on your list of zombie fall methods worked and she slid off.

I am trying your endless circle base. But I expanded it to 41x41 external and 13x13 inside. Some zeds have the tag UnReach above what does that mean?

if they are beating on the tower inside, at the bottom and showing unreachable above, then they can't find a path to you - possibly because it's too big, or because the path isn't complete. If some zombies run around and some don't then it's probably a size thing, if none loop around, then more likely no valid path. Hope that helps - if not let me know!

So far it’s working I think when they fall they momentarily have that tag but they get back up and run around in circles heh. I even added a 3 high elevator and they don’t see that as a valid path. So I can drive my car right into the tower heh

Pretty well, I added some as part of the end-of-horde cleanup in this video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6WnnWmLppKBjNU) but I've not tried it with them on permanently, as I expect the blades would wear out well before the end of horde night (with 64 zombie hordes anyway).

Если которотко ты используешь ИИ зомби + анимация падения зомби на поверхность + скольжение = 1 - ИИ зомби отключается. 2 - идет анимация падения. 3 - ИИ зомби не успевает начать определенное действие (прыжок на платформу) то есть. 4 - происходит скольжение зомби. 5 - они падают вниз. 6 - все заново. как я понял все так но есть минус такой постройки 1 материалы + время. 2 сильные зомби = бомба + плевун = минус база

I'm not sure I understand sorry. I think you're explaining a new base idea? Where zombies fall, then slide, and that disables the zombie AI, so they can't jump back up? Is that right?

Я не уверен, что понимаю, извините. Я думаю, вы объясняете новую базовую идею? Где зомби падают, а затем скользят, и это отключает ИИ зомби, чтобы они не могли снова подпрыгнуть? Это правильно?

Не совсем как я понял есть приоритет действий = ℅событию. Самый простой способ объяснить. Когда вы играете и зомби ломают лёгкие двери есть ℅ что они упадут, пройдут + упадут, или нечего не случится. Так вот. Наверно благодаря приоритету действий когда зомби падает на нижнюю платформу то происходит приоритет действий (как я думаю) вы и сами видели что некоторые зомби когда падали на стену некоторые просто шли а некоторые падали ~ вставали и шли к вам. То Есть = когда зомби падает с высокой поверхности на более нижнию то происходит скольжение то есть зомби не останавливается и падает в проход и в это случаи ИИ зомби отключается и не успевает сообразить но если много зомби то последний зомби исп. Их как платформу скольжение заканчивается и он успевает прыгнуть на следующие платформу но так как там нет других зомби то он опять падает. И ещё можно вы сделаете расчёты длины и высоты где отступать для постройки то есть вот куб от него (10 блоков со всех сторон тут высота идёт слева на право с 5 до 10 блоков и на повороте увеличиваем высоту + сколько нужно блоков для этого строения) буду благодарен вам.

@@CautiousPancake Not quite as I understood it, there is a priority of actions = ℅ to the event. The easiest way to explain. When you play and zombies break down the light doors there is a chance that they will fall, pass will fall, or nothing will happen. And so. Probably due to the priority of actions when a zombie falls on the lower platform, what happens is the priority of actions (as I think) you yourself saw that some zombies when they fell on the wall some

So I really like the concept and idea so ofcourse I had to build it and the first time it worked great but I decided to start over in a new random game and now they are not pathing but rather beating on the central tower. (Day 7 worked as intended but not day 14 onwards. ) What did I do wrong?

Zombies at the central tower most likely means that they don't see the path up to you as valid anymore - maybe you lost a block somewhere or made a small change? I did a follow up video where I converted it to wood, and you can see it fail a couple of times there when Demo's took out a block in the up down half plate section - it might be something like that? kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6WnnWmLppKBjNU

@@CautiousPancake I have went over it a few times and I think potentially it's not as tall some how as the previous. The only difference I know I have done to the base is i hollowed the central tower out and built an underground farm at bedrock. Would that have a pathing effect?

@@bttmlesspit25 Hollow central tower should be ok, the farm underneath might be the issue - I've heard others that had mined under the base having issues with pathing - I'll see if I can break it by doing something similar.

So far no luck though - I dug single block hole straight down from the middle of the central tower, to bedrock, then create a 2 block high (up from the bedrock) room that was wider than the tower, and the zombies still path around the outside. Also dug a tunnel under the outside stairs along the bedrock and it was ok. So I'm stumped! Got a few screenshots you can share?

cant remember do turrents plant on top of the 1/4 or 1/2 block? if so wondering if ya place them so the barrel is at 'head height' will make them more 1 shot kill.

Hey CC - yeah they do place "ok" on top - they just look funny as they float/hover in the air rather than sit flush. It's a good question though - if where I put the turrets was the best spot or not!

I was pondering if would be possible and productive to make the gun platform then follow the height change of the loop at head height. I do like the design and wasnt questioning it I was just wondering in general if turrent height effects % of headshots. figure if anyone you might know ^_^

Hey sorry, this comment got caught up in the review list somehow. I nearly did a video on turret height and location vs damage - there's definitely some locations better than others, depending on smg vs shotgun turret, but also the speed and direction of the zombies. For this base I found SMG turrets in advance of the path rotated 45 degrees toward the oncoming zombies was the most effective when a block off the path. For an example have a look where I put them in the version of this base with all wood, I used turrets and blade traps for cleanup of the zombies at the end of the horde night, basically along what you are suggesting. I don't think a block up or down made much difference to headshot count and over all damage. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6WnnWmLppKBjNU

btw ive recently started using god mode but i did it thru the DM debug mode menu click god mode fly etc.. ive noticed when getting hit by zombies i dont take damage but i do keep getting increasing infection % - does this happen with you? or is the way u do god mode a better way of doing it & how do u do it?

I just use keyboard shortcut "q" to turn on god mode (once you've turned on debug mode with "dm"). Don't get infection increasing - it can be applied but is removed a second later.

That uses a lot of blocks. Way too many for someone in the early stages. Sure they could dig up enough rock and clay to make that much but that would take a lot of time better spent questing and clearing POIs. This should work with one block vice 3 across as well. Will test that out. PS. While the 3x3 block is available, it it doesn't have any more HPs than a single block, that just makes it a lot easier for the zombies to break a big hole in your wall but taking out a 3x3 block instead of 3 single blocks.

I agree - it's a lot of blocks - I've got a follow up video coming that makes it just as expensive in terms of blocks, but less on the materials which might make it more viable for early game. And I agree on the 3x3 - the reduction in hp is a concern, unless you used those as concrete, it's still a 5k block instead of 9x1500 HP blocks, but it's closer. Thanks for the feedback - and let me know how you go with one block vs 3 across - that's not something I tested and would make it significantly cheaper! I might give it a try later if I can too!

@@CautiousPancake A ramp up and a 3 block wide way and some jigsaw like structure to slow zombies down and using a couple of robotic sledges would save about 600 000 cobblestone rocks. I'd rather build something simpler 😂😂...

I’m seeing some odd behavior when feral sense option is enabled. They seem to go straight for the foundation of the base instead of going the path that goes in circles

Hey Pipboy - just did a quick test and I'm not seeing any change in behavior with feral sense on. In theory that just means the zombies know where you are - which on a horde night they will anyway. So they should still be following the normal path rules to get to you. Going straight for the base of the tower likely means the path is broken or your standing in a part of the tower that the zombies can't get to when they follow the path.

Ya I thought I updated the comment it turned out that when I was outside on the bridge the distance when they were on the ramp was less than 11. So I don’t stand on the bridge anymore at least over the ramp. The second change I did was I put the support pillar on the ramp instead of where it was before(between base and ramp) and that seemed to solve the issue Thanks for checking :)

My understanding was that zombies try to take the shortest path to you If they spawn opposite the staircase will they actually run around to the staircase or should there be steps at every corner

They'll run all they way around the outside to the staircase, you can see the screamers do that in this video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6WnnWmLppKBjNU) having said that - having extra stairs on each corner on the outside of the base would be ok I think, but don't do it on the inside - as they'll just use the shortest one like you say.

@@CautiousPancake I'm currently using this base design in my game just after day 14 with a larger central tower (9x9) & 2-block wide staircase instead of 3-blocks like yours (still 11 blocks between them) with just wooden frames. The zombies that spawned during the blood moon opposite of the entry staircase/ramp were beating on the bottom corner as @Arcticgale Gamer was initially concerned about. I'm assuming they were trying to reach me at the tower because I guess they couldn't find the path over to the start point, possibly due to the larger design. That being said, I'm thinking of making an archway at the opposite corner of this base as well (like you've done at the entry point if they fall off the inner part) to see if the AI gives them a path to the entry stairs once they get closer to the player in the central tower.... Overall, even though the majority of my base was still wooden frames (except for those susceptible pole plates, those were cobblestone), this held up better than I was expecting! Thanks for sharing your AFK base designs! ☺

@@kryzx8000 Hey Kryzx - thanks for the feedback - it does sound like the larger size is having an issue, although I just did a quick test with a 9x9 tower, 11 block gap, 3-wide stairs, and they ran fine around the outside - outer wall is a 35 block square, with just the one corner stairway up. Still adding in the archway like you suggested should help! Glad it held up and let me know if the archway helps!

i feel like u could make your base much smaller and it would still work... whats the minimum blocks u can use to make it still work? i feel like u could have the loop smaller, and only 1 block wide or 2... and the tower ur standing on could be a 2x2 or 3x3

You could certainly make the path narrower, but you do increase the chance of them getting stuck on each other, the supports would be the first place I’d be looking to save some blocks, it could certainly be done with far less materials.

Very nice... have a suspicion that you're not leveled as a character... that made the day 70 horde lighter than it should have been. I avoid the turrets since they added Demos. Those things blow the hell out of a base.

Hey zonker, can't remember the level but don't worry I slightly modified this base to take on a max gamestage horde as well, but with all blocks made of wood, so it does hold up against harder hordes too 🙂 oh and in alpha 20 they changed smg and shotgun turrets to not trigger demo's so you can use them safely, along with dart traps etc. Only junk turrets will set them off! I've not seen anything about that changing in A21!

What if you did something like this but made 4 paths and used the metal doors only have switches so you could open them up at different times say when a large horde went down one path shut the door and see if they would all turn around and rub towards the other open door

In creative mode you can hit the "u" key (with default bindings) to open the creative block menu and give yourself items from there.

The object of my horde base if I decide to build one, would definitely not be for the zeds to endlessly run around forever, I want them to die. 😊So I'd have spikes, auto-turrets, and robo-turrets so I don't have to get up close and melee. I do enough melee when I'm out exploring. I also like the "punchy-bots" to knock them off of any wall areas I don't want them on if they happen to jump to or stack up to.😆

Agree completely - this was the video where I show the initial concept - there's two other vids I've done to show how to use it in a more practical approach - one for day 7000 vs wood, and one for farming screamers on day 2 - both sound like they might be up your alley as it was all about how to use this base design to kill zeds (although the screamer one is melee focussed since you don't have much ranged ammo on day 2 :)

With the additional crafting/home base your fine with screamers as well... Is there a finite number of zombies they can spawn in? Or is the stamina of your graphic card the end of this base design😅😂

@@CautiousPancake because if streamers can spawn in infinite numbers of zombies your hardware will break down...😬 Was just an example of my strange humour. I already have problems with the performance of the game of the is to much action. Just watched your "game stage is broken" video and the 100 zombies just lagging is what I expected to be the outcome of screamers. But I'm binge watching through your videos atm so knowledge is flooding into me... Wait with questions till I've seen them all☺️

How far into the game would this last if built on wooden pylons with a three wide deck on top I wonder... I still think flipper blocks would add so much fun. Those and swing bat blocks. And fire.... yes, more fire = ) Automatic molotov dropper blocks = )

Yeah man - flamethrower turret is one that I want more than anything - there's already gas for the fuel - just need some new parts! Leafblower from the hardware store, and a hose, something like that anyway! I know some mods add them, and hopefully with the flame environmental trap in A21 they might be headed that way! On the wood blocks - I did consider trying that - I might still do!

oooh good pickup - I noticed that mistake when I did the next video where the challenge was to do day 7000 horde on this base, but with all the blocks made of wood - and I made it taller there. In this video the roof is 11 high from memory, so at the start I was fine standing on the roof, but when the cops started spitting and I went inside I messed up there, as inside where the path joins the tower was only 8 high I think - so yes 100% that tower should have been taller!
