I'm not writing a thesis, but I liked what you said at the beginning about skimming through a book. I'm guilty of always reading the Foreword and Introduction before anything else! I think its because I feel like I havn't completed a book unless I've read absolutely everything, but of course this isn't always necessary. My main problem seems to be focusing on one thing at a time. Even watching your video I found my thoughts drifting onto other things before bringing them back again to concentrate on what you were saying!

Splendid stuff, informative and entertaining. 2 small points, which I hope do not seem nitpicky: 1) at 1:43 a lovely drawing of John Major appears, but is curiously annotated "Prime Minister Norman Major" (perhaps this is just a nod in Private Eye's direction); and 2) at 13:11 "Exocoriate" makes an appearance, having annexed a second "o" for itself from some presumably innocent other word. These may or may not be easy to correct. Or perhaps they were just planted to make sure we were paying attention! Either way they did little to detract from my enjoyment of this series so far.

Thank you for clearly explaining that I don't need to use fancy language. Every time I do and try to find nice words, 1, I don't express myself at all, and 2, takes me forever to write bc I am trying to figure out how to use profound terms to incorporate into my writing.

Greetings from Russia! I think your ideas about writing unique not only in English but also in Russian. Unfortunately, in my country teachers don't try to explain 'How to write an excellent essay', that is why I had bought a MacMillan book 'Academic Writing From Paragraph to Essay'. I try to start writing in the right way, to use more vocabulary in a topic. Thank you very much for explaining the details in the previous video and here.

Thank you for this video. I'm so relieved to find someone willing to lay out how to do assignments. I'm autistic, I've messed up a lot in my life, I had a 65% average and barely graduated high school. Now 7 years later I'm entering university with the goal of 85-90% averages. Despite how helpful it may sound societies way of teaching people to write essays which is "try it your way and have your bad grades correct you" isn't helpful. This is so much more useful. So thank you.

My old form teacher was a bit of a maverick. Each time we got in trouble in our school you were given an 'Order mark' if you did good you would get a 'merit'. However my teacher wanted his form to excel so each time you got an 'Order mark' you were also charged with producing an essay. He had a selection of humourous and pointless titles which you must perciver with. Like 'The mating rituals of a mongoose'. Goes without saying he had a filing cabinet full of essays from myself and my class mate Lloyd at the end of year. It did not exactly deter us 😂 He did threaten to compile them and release them as a book. Great guy. Good teacher. Good times.

“Don’t start at the forward or introduction... just pandering... rubbish!” I’m sorry but I disagree. Perhaps this is the case with a great majority of books, however I know firsthand that reading those first few pages is sometimes essential - even if the reader is a well educated, and well read, individual.

@@ProfessorTimWilson sure... what I had in mind Ill give you a free pass to my course... and you could perhaps make a video response to it. This is of course a very big favor for me to ask, and I have very little to offer in return other than you'll be imparting some of your wisdom and experience onto a younger much less experienced educator. The course is 3.25 hours of lecture that can be played at x2 speed to save time. The target audience is American Highschool and ESL students preparing to enter American state level university classes. The purpose of the class is to help ensure they are well equipped to pass composition 101 the first time the are faced with it. I realize by asking you to post a response to my course publicly it is a very high risk event for myself because if you don't like the course my reputation is shot. But I respect your opinion and expertise on the subject. All of that being said, would you be interested, and what would you ask in return... P.S. I am sorry for the utter lack of proof reading. Writing on one's phone is a young person's game, and I fear I no longer count as such.
