*Question of the Episode: What is an animal that you find adorable but the general public think is ugly?* When Fiona the hippo was born I heard quite a bit negative noise from people who couldn't understand why others found her unbearably cute.... but since that isn't the general public I guess that doesn't count. So - other than a couple of zoo nerds, I've yet to find someone who also shares my affection for flying foxes. They pretty much look like winged dogs, but from what I've seen, people still view them like they would any other bat. *Condor Ridge Mini Overview* *- Positives:* Creatively educational, shows just how important zoo can be, it doubles as a botanical garden, I don't think I'll ever find a better vista in a zoo like that again, and it's 24 years old but looks as if it could be brand new. *Negative Nitpicks:* The species list isn't as impressive as it once was on opening day (which is normal and not really the park's fault). I wish there was a way to blend in the fencing of the bighorn sheep enclosure with the natural landscape rather than have very noticeable metal bars as the barrier. Despite their injuries, I still think the eagles could use more space. Condor Ridge Species List as of May 2024: 1. Desert Bighorn Sheep 2. California Condor 3. Western Burrowing Owl, San Clemente Loggerhead Shrike, Desert Tortoise 4. Red-tailed Hawk, Western Harris's Hawk 5. Grey-winged Trumpeter 6. Toco Toucan 7. Northern Bald Eagle 8. Thick-billed Parrot Original Species List: 1. Desert Bighorn Sheep 2. California Condor 3. Western Burrowing Owl, Desert Tortoise, Black-billed Magpie 4. Western Harris's Hawk 5. This’ll sound strange, but I love cockroaches! They’re so funky looking and I have a thing for bugs. And their coloring. I love the brown, the most fabulous color any animal can pull off (I love all animals, you can’t make me choose)

When I saw the notification, I HAD to watch this on my TV! This tour makes me want to go back to San Diego even more now! I loved seeing the Bighorn Sheep and Condors, as well as getting an amazing view of the savannas; I sometimes forgot I was even in San Diego! The lambs weren't born yet when I visited, but I'm glad you got the chance to see them. As for the Garden trail, it wasn't only a nice walk, but I got to see wild Roadrunners and even Mule Deer! To answer your question, I'm gonna say a tie between Naked Mole Rats and Bats; especially for the latter, I mean come on, they're pretty much pugs and chihuahuas with wings, how can you not love an animal with a puppies face? Amazing tour as always, can't wait for next weeks!

One animal that I think is adorable that most people would find to be ugly is the Brazilian tapir. Most people who are aware of tapirs would them to be weird at best and ugly at worst. For me, I think the Brazilian tapir especially is adorable is because they enjoy being cuddled by staff and people doing tapir experiences, they can be best friends with capybaras and in captivity, they're mostly calm and peaceful.

I just found your channel and am loving it. As someone who works in the zoo field I would find it interesting if you were to compare a specific species exhibit against all others of that species for the zoos you have visited. Say lions, what lion exhibits did you like and for what reason. You could use some of your archived footage and could create more videos without having to revisit each facility (not that I would be opposed to you doing that either).

This is quite a trek to get to when you're in the Safari Park, and it gives the vibe of being in a desert, but, like the other exhibits, it's quite a beautiful area, with a lot of nice views of the valley below. An animal that I find adorable but the public thinks is ugly? Man, that's a hard toughie, but maybe I'll go with Flying Foxes.

Swell! I would go for the cute Visayan Warty Pig! And visit both the Woodland Park Zoo & the San Francisco Zoo someday! Plus, here are 8 zoo trivia questions for you & your girlfriend, Zak... 1) How many years did Inti the bobcat live in the San Francisco Zoo before his age death? 2) How many years ago did the Lincoln Park Zoo once housed elephants? 3) What years did the San Diego Zoo Safari Park have housed ring-tailed lemurs in their once Lemur Walk attraction? 4) How many years ago did the San Francisco Zoo's Children Zoo attraction introduced a peregrine falcon ambassador? 5) What other eagle species do you prefer the San Diego Zoo to house in their Eagle Trail exhibit? 6) How many years did the Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium exhibited red river hogs? 7) What tiger species do you want the San Francisco Zoo to house in the future? 8) How many years ago did SeaWorld San Diego have once housed Clydesdale Horses? Muddle & Supersaurus!

I really liked the OG species list that focused on Western US/Baja species. Now that it's been dissolved, the experience does feel weakened (especially since the smaller enclosures are average). I'd say bring back the porcupine, prairie dogs, roadrunner, & aplomado falcons.

I once overheard someone saying how "really pissed" it made them to see inaccurately (i.e., geographically)-displayed animals, or animals in the "wrong" part of the park (like tropical toco toucans or grey-winged trumpeters in a desert southwest-themed area). Once I heard someone complaining about the fact that Polar Bear Plunge (at the SD Zoo) had featured Pallas’s cats from Central Asia, Arabian sand cats & Turkmenistan caracals in exhibits formerly housing Siberian yellow-throated martens, Arctic foxes & snowy owls. Yes, the latter three are more "boreal" relevant, but the yellow-throated marten is NOT a polar species, anyway so… why you mad?! 😂 They were absolutely livid about this, without even realizing that…uh, it’s a zoo, animals go through changes, or they need to be relocated for breeding purposes (or seasonally separated by gender), thus exhibits will become available. In turn, other animals may need to be relocated, so if there’s a viable spot, zoos will take it. Regardless of geographical accuracy! Some even relocate animals for their own enrichment. I know Big Cat Rescue in Florida & other places do that. They call it "going on vacation". The animals have a rotating schedule for relocations, just to keep things interesting for them. They’ll spend a month in a different, larger enclosure, for new smells, new sights, or potentially be moved to an employees-only area, as a break from the gawkers. That’s taking the animals stress from being viewed into account, people don’t even consider this, yet they flip out. 🤔
@otterlord5906
@otterlord5906 Ай бұрын
I agree that geographical accuracy for the sake of geographic accuracy is pointless, but displaying just any animal is also pointless. I'd argue that it is more important that the zoo's commit to a collection plan while supporting their interpretive goals. Polar bear plunge was meant to be a bioclimatic exhibit and that was the main narrative, so the animal collection should follow it.
