Catching Up with 4-month-old Alizeti

‪@SedgwickCoZoo‬ Sedgwick County Zoo excitedly welcomed a new member of the chimpanzee troop - a baby girl born August 20. Her name is Alizeti which means “sunflower” in Swahili.
Chimpanzee Chuckie gave birth in the presence of the troop during the early morning hours. The animal care team at SCZ observed mom and baby for a short time before coming to the conclusion that Chuckie was not exhibiting appropriate maternal behavior. In order to give Alizeti the best chance of survival, the team made the life-saving decision to remove her from the troop and provide human-assisted rearing during this first crucial stage of her development.
Human-assisted rearing involves round-the-clock care and attention for baby, designed to mirror how a chimp mother would naturally care for her infant. Just as mother chimpanzees never let baby out of their arms, caretakers will do the same until Alizeti is developmentally strong enough to be reunited with the troop. At that point, she will be raised by a foster mother with support of the rest of the chimpanzee family.

Oh my gosh, that laugh starting at 1:17 is too precious! And the toothless yawn! 🥰 So sorry that the little one wasn’t being cared for appropriately. That’s always such a shame because truly the ideal situation is for her to be with her mom and troop from the start. So thankful that she’ll be reunited with her family in the future, though! Hoffentlich gibt's jemanden der das süße Baby so oft es nur geht am Körper trägt. Das Urvertrauen was alle Kinder brauchen, sollte man auch dem Schimpansen Kind gewähren. Er wirkt so verloren. Wenn man denkt, daß er eigentlich Tag und Nacht in der großen Familie von seiner Mama getragen und liebkost, gesäugt und gelaust wird, kann man sich vorstellen was er entbehrt. Er muss auch lernen wie man sich als Äffchen zu benehmen hat. Ich wünsche mir für ihn, daß er dies alles nach Möglichkeit vermittelt bekommt. Nur nicht zu sehr vermenschlichen und bitte keine Klamotten.

Gosh are they born with so many teeth? Poor nursing mama. The newborns are so precious and cute I can barely stand it. I would get one of those baby carriers that look like a cloth sling. Carry her everywhere. ❤
