Hhhhhhmmm, good question. Though I still like the Zoom effects pedals, I would say that now there are a lot of great alternatives that I would probably buy over the Zoom G3XN. As an example, I think the NUX MG-400 is great unit, also the Valeton GP-200 and the GP-200LT look like a great value multi-effects with great sounds. Another great choice would be the Mooer GE200. Most newer multi-effects allow you to load your own impulse responses (IR’s) but the Zoom G3XN doesn’t support third party IR’s. I hope that helps a little. Cheers.
@clouds5

@@Tone-Quest That's it. The actual tone, modeling and effects of the Zoom g3xn are absolutely great and on par with more modern and expensive devices. The downside is the cab-sim/IRs. They are somewhat mediocre and don't have enough options. But if you're using a real cabinet (like a clean amp) or have a separate cab-sim/IR loader device (like the Mooer radar) the g3xn is one of the best bang for you buck modeler/multi-effect devices. I mostly use my G3xn into the clean channel of a Blackstar amp and it sounds very good. Compared it to a lot of more modern devices and there is simply no reason to upgrade. But if you're going to use it as a standalone unit direct to PA, there are more complete options.

Hey. Do you think it's worth to change my zoom G3X for this one. I'm only going to use the modulations. Effects. Like Phaser. Flanger.. Reverb. Delay etc. Through the loop effect of my tube amp. Cheers
@Tone-Quest
@Tone-Quest Жыл бұрын
If it was me I don’t think I would change from a G3X to a G3Xn if you are only using modulation in an effects loop, unless you found a great deal for a G3Xn. I know brand new in the US they are selling for $249. For that kind of money, I would be tempted to check out the Hotone Ampero mini…or maybe checkout the Zoom G2 Four, which runs $200 brand new.

theres something weird about the zooms dirts, its like there isnt enough pick attack, especially on the lower notes its very wooly/flabby low end...it lacks the bite when mute chugging, its like its covered in a wooly blanket on the low strings....ive tried a few zoom pedals, and they have always been the same, even with nice humbuckers.....very strange.

Great demo, Chris. One question - what's the reasoning for putting reverb in between the amp and cabinet? I always think of reverb as coming last in the chain. Does placement make a big difference?
@Tone-Quest
@Tone-Quest 7 жыл бұрын
I've been using Zoom Pedals a long time and back when I used the Zoom 2.1nu pedals they had the order of effects fix. On that unit, the last piece of the chain was the cabinet. So I guess that order of effects has stuck with me when I order my effects. I guess also too, if I play a real amp with pedals the very last component is the cabinet and usually I put the reverb in the effects loop. Does it make a difference? It probably make a small difference but not sure it would be overly perceivable but sound like it is a great experiment to try, just to see how big a difference it does make. Easy to do, just will take a little time. Thanks for the great question and for making me think outside of my own box. Cheers!

When using the preamps and cabinets, do you need to connect to the amps effects return loop behind the amp ,what if your amp does not have an effects return loop , can you still get a good sound if you connected straight in the input amp?
@Tone-Quest
@Tone-Quest 6 жыл бұрын
tony mediati You could do either way. I’ve achieved decent sounds both ways. Going into the return gives less amp (or pre-amp) coloring of tone but you also lose front panel control this way. Going straight into the front of the amp is a little more straight forward but obviously the amp colors the tone more. Another method you could try is not to use a cab on the G3Xn, just use the amp model to be like a pedal you plug into the front of your “real” amp. So many options, just experiment and see what give the best sounds/tones on your amp.

Hi Chris, thanks much for this. Just one question. The G5Xn has the ability to record via USB, which the G3 doesn’t have. Would USB recording be better in terms of quality as compared to taking a line out as you have done here. Thanks in advance.
@Tone-Quest

Generally speaking, I would say they should be on par with one another. I've recording using the USB on some multi-effects unit and gotten weird and strange results (maybe the issue was the USB driver or maybe just the computer was being weird), not always just occasionally, so for me, my setup and my work flow, I generally find it more consistent to use the outputs from the multi-effect unit into my USB audio interface.

I need to get back to playing the G3Xn, I've been working on some other projects. why reverb is placed between amp and cabsim?

Tanuj Singh, your pickup might suck but to optimize what you have, Try adding graphic eq and cut the lowest of bandwitdths to almost nothing to take out the flab in favor of bumping up the low mid-range instead if you need to add more low end. Also, dont max out your distortion. Back it off a little (or a lot) and again, use your eq to tweak your sound. You'll often find you can sound just as heavy with the gain backed off, but adding a really good EQ curve to boost the frequencies where you need it. Think of each frequency as it's own gain within the curve

MadDrummer100000, I have owned and played through G3Xn and the ME-25 but have never played through or owned the G3X but IMO the G1on and the G3Xn I consider to be from the same family. Though I don't know for certain, I would think the G1on and the G3X sound the same or very similar. I have owned the G1on for quite a while now and love it. I’m personally was not a fan of the ME-25. It had good sounds but I found the operation of the device to be obtuse and strange. Maybe I have spent too much time in the Zoom Eco-system but to be fair, I've owned Line 6, Korg, Zoom, Digitech, Boss and Vox multi-effect pedals. In regards to the looper, it is a little strange on the G3Xn. It is a like adding an effect to a patch, which then takes away from me adding another effect I might want. On the G1on, the looper is just a utility you can select on any patch and doesn’t get in the way of the effect choices. While I have the latest Zoom G3Xn pedal, there is a part of me that also wants to purchase the G3X pedal and compare them head to head. I’m sure the G3Xn has a few more overall bells and whistles but as you know, most of it comes down to sound.

Chris Benton that would be a great comparison, because I'm really torn between both of them, I don't know which to buy, the g3x or the g3xn. I'll try demoing them on the store before making the purchase. Thanks for the support, my friend.

i go over a line 6 pod in my pc, and it sound not really good, what can i do to optimize? that sounds really good in the video, but what is your interface in that you play? i try guitar rig and the pod farm, but i never get a good sound with the zoom.

Ple Are you using the Zoom G3Xn also? If so, are you using the Line 6 pod as just an interface? I wouldn't run the Zoom into Pod Farm personally. At 7:26 into the video I show how I recorded using the Zoom G3Xn. I run the Zoom G3Xn output into the Behringer Uphoria UMC204HD. The Uphoria is connect to my computer via USB. Also the patches I use are also using a cabinet sim, which is very important to get a good sound from a patch that has an amp.

yes i use the zoom g3xn. i have no experience with other interfaces, the line 6 pod was my first interface to record guitars on pc. presumably i should try the behringer?

Not saying you have to use Behringer but it would probably be easier with a generic USB Audio Interface. I have a Line 6 Tone Port UX1, which is great for playing Pod Farm but if I want to record directly from another source (like the Zoom G3Xn) I found it easier and better to use something like the Behringer USB Audio Interface with my DAW software. I've been very happy with my purchase of the Behringer U-Phoria UMC204HD but they have less expensive solutions if you want to experiment to see if you can get a better recording. Maybe something like the BEHRINGER U-PHORIA UM2 $30 (US). A very popular brand in this arena is Focusrite products.
