Great comparison, thanks! Digitech sounds more detailed direct, but according to my experience, Zoom sounds better for bigger venues.
@leinadatidumarp5 жыл бұрын
I used Digitech RP 360 XP and Zoom G5n. From what I know, G3xn and G5n use the same computer, so I assume the sound quality is the same. These are what I observed: 1. In terms of amp modelling, overall Digitech is better. It is also brighter. Zoom, on the other hand, is compressed. As an example, I tried to create in Zoom the same Fender twin reverb sound that I got from RP360, but I could not. The sound is not as bright and thick. The amp model in Zoom has additional "bright" switch. If I turn it on, I will get the brightness but lose the thickness. If it is off, it has the thickness but not bright enough. 2. RP360, however, has a volume inconsistency issue. You will find some patches (and amp models) not as loud as the others, even when the volume is maximum. I think this is mainly caused by different power management mechanisms used by the units. Zoom use a certain "power processing number" for each effect, and the limit of the total number is 100. Simply said, you cannot use whatever effects you want because the total processing number may be above the limit of the device capability. Digitech, however, does not have this issue. The only limit you have is the number of effects in a chain (same as Zoom). HOWEVER, in order to compensate with the limitation of processing power, the device will reduce the overall sound power. I found several times that for patches with overdriven sound, turning on drive or reverb will reduce the overall volume. I posted previously a comment about liveliness comparison between the two devices. I was using RP 360 XP for a live gig, and the volume inconsistency really annoyed me because I had to adjust my mixer setting everytime I changed the patch. 3. This is not about sound quality, but convenience. With Digitech you can put wah pedal and volume pedal in the same patch. By default the volume pedal is on, and turning on the wah effect will change expression pedal to a wah pedal. This can be done by assigning to the stomp mode or by using the toe switch. Zoom DOES NOT have these. You cannot assign wah pedal and volume pedal in one patch. So if you want to use both, you have to set 2 different patches. 4. Digitech only allows 1 pedal per category. So you cannot use more 2 drive pedals, or use chorus with vibrato. This is not the issue with Zoom (with the exception of the expression pedal I explained previously). 5. Zoom is noisier in overall. I also have an issue with the USB connection to PC, as it adds noise. This doesn't happen with Digitech.

I dug mine out recently and started using it with an AMT Chameleon Cab, Cab Simulator pedal. As I suspected, the built in cab sims aren't that great. Using the chameleon cab and turning off the internal cab sim of the rp360xp made it sound actually really good. The amp models are pretty good in it, but any external cab simulator will probably get better results.

Very nice review. I'm still liking the sound of the RP over the Zoom. The RP still sounds a bit bright at times, but I use a Berringer EQ pedal (very low cost) that shapes the sound how I want. Also, nice job on the history lesson of the amps.

To me the only setting that sounded better on the Zoom was the Mesa dual rectifier, but even that is debatable. I'm certain that with a little tweaking, the Zoom could be brightened up, given a little headroom, depth and sparkle, but if you ask me, the Digitech just won that shootout.
@FingerinUrDaughter5 жыл бұрын
i actually prefer the digitech mesa to the zoom mesa. zooms mesa is meant to replicate a very different model, which is why it sounds so much different. its meant to be used specifically with the mesa cab simulator, which makes it sound far better than digitechs version (especially if you use the cab sim on digitech, as theirs all sound terrible). only problem with that, is you have to devote 2 of your chain links to specifically your distortion. not a big deal for me, i generally use little to no effects aside from distortion, noise gate, and maybe some compression. but some idiots like to just throw on so much shit you can barely hear whats actually being played anymore.

While I agree that the amp sims in digitech are better, the device is losing in terms of liveliness and volume. I just practiced with my band and we used a mixer to project the sound through a speaker, because the practice room is small and we don't have amps. I was using RP360x and the other guitarist was using G3Xn. My gear was connected to left channel, while his to the right channel (or vice versa), since we have limited stereo channels in the mixer. This means we're using the exactly same settings of the mixer (because each was in 'mono' mode). With max preset volume, his guitar was always noticeably louder and sounded more lively, to the point that I got frustrated and had to always remind him to lower his gear's volume.

@@rafaeldemoraessantos7773 the digitech pedals are difficult to dial in a good sound on. they are very simple in the controls they give you, and their effects are often times very poorly done EQ boosters in the case of many of their distortion modules, and other low end methods that result in very bland and boring sounds. i used an RP200 for years and was never able to make more than 10-20 sounds i actually enjoyed. the higher end models like the one in this video are a step above, but their still leaps behind the zoom.

It is hard to hear from the video but I wonder if 360xp play is as responsive and lively as a G3Xn, or just comparable to a RP55.

Digitech by far. More detailed, more clarity and more opensounding. I agree with people that think Zoom sounds muddy, and I'd say boxy as well.
@FingerinUrDaughter5 жыл бұрын
thats because he dosent adjust the bass/mid/treble but rather leaves it at stock settings. in actuality the zoom is far better in that regard as most settings start relatively centered, and its EQ is 16DB vs digitechs 12DB, which means the zoom gives more control over those settings, as well as can provide a larger boost or cut to the frequencies you desire.

I wondered the same :D Digitech sounds way better in almost everything... Deeper, purer, wider, the depth, clarity, presence. It's all better. 800JCM, Plexi, 100 super lead, Mesa - Digitech kicked Zoom ass like hell. OR 120 and Bassman sound good on both, on the other hand. Again 65 Fender was almost a rape on the Zoom :D I don't have either of them but it''s obvious choice to go for rp360xp. Not to mention great soft, way more available configs. Zoom sounds like when you buy your first guitar with 8" 15W combo and you try connecting OD/Dist effect for the first time. You get the overdrive but it's just bad, it feels like the lack of power, lack of "meat". I don't want to go back to this never again, not to mention pay 200USD for that "pleasure". It's not the bad emulation when it comes to zoom, it's just really bad sound basics. Listening to guitar like your speaker was under water? No, thanks... Listened to the video on BT DT770 Pro (yes, your audio source and output is important).

I'm considering getting an rp360 but my only reservation is the EQ. It's 3 band, and I just don't know how good a 3 band eq is at shaping tone. In my mind, 5 bands should be the bare minimum, and EQ is, IMO, the number one means of shaping tone. With that said, two questions: 1, can anyone speak to the effectiveness of a 3 band eq at shaping tone? Is 3 enough or is it kind of limited? 2, I know the rp360 allows for 8 effects at once, so is it possible to use EQ as an effect in 2 of the 8 slots thereby creating a 6 band EQ? Or, in 3 spots for a 9 band? Thanks
@Tone-Quest5 жыл бұрын
Do I think 3 Band EQ is enough? Yes, since most modern amps come with a 3 Band EQ and most can dial in a tone they like or get very close to it with just the 3 Band EQ built into the amp and then of course you have the option to sculpt it more with a EQ pedal. Regarding the 2nd question, most or all the amps in the RP360 have a 3 band EQ. There is also a 3 Band Parametric EQ pedal that you can add to each patch but unfortunately you can only add the 3 Band Parametric EQ pedal once per patch. Hope that helps. Good luck.

reason I liked rp360 , bcoz they are very expressive , i am understanding every bit of there sound , but i have to say zoom wins on the look

The zoom is really muddy. People probably listen through iphones XD. Listen to the fender twin for example. Zoom totaly mud digitech warm but defined. Sad thing is i have the zoom. thx for that comparising
@Cooker987 жыл бұрын
These comparisons will be very useful for many in time, thanks. The zoom seems a bit better though with basic eq'ing I feel the rp360xp can be quite close to the zoom. My request is if you can get your hands on a gt1 a comparison of amps would be great, seems the zoom g3xn and boss are in direct competition with these products.
@Cooker987 жыл бұрын
oh and why not a joyo american vs the g3xn? would be interesting :)

What's the ditto used for?
@Tone-Quest7 жыл бұрын
Patrick Long I used the Ditto to record a riff or a chord progression and then loop it through each preset. That way the riff or chord progression is always played the same.

Digitech RP360XP
@JDStone207 ай бұрын
The Digitech RP360XP sounds great! I also have a Boss Pocket GT and a Boss Katana Air, and as awesome and amazing those both sound the Digitech still sounds better. Too bad they don't make these anymore, hopefully once Digitech is up and running again they will make more of these. The RP360XP is really a lot more useful with the FS3X footswitch added. I need to get a backup Digitech RP360 or RP360XP before Josh Scott of JHS Pedals does a video on them and the price goes from $100 USD used to $300!! LOL!!

Sorry guys but I don't agree with the majority of comments ... the zoom is definitely more organic, more natural. Digital shear seems to suit a lot of people but have they ever played on real big overdriven tube amps? I have the chance to do it often and for me the zoom is more like them.😉
@Tone-Quest3 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with disagreeing with the majority. I appreciated your point of view and for giving your perspective, especially since you have real tube amp experience.
@Hagchtogow3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris. Yes I play since a long time in different bands. The multi-effect is an indispensable complement to my pedalboard because we have a very wide cover repertoire. I have tried several and this zoom, in addition to sounding quite natural (for its price) is ultra practical on stage : thanks to its 6 footwitches and 3 screens ! Thank you also for your excellent video. A french musician.

Hey man, you are awesome. But I want to ask you have you tried any of the other effects pedals, like the BOSS GT-1, or the Zoom G3xn? If so, which one do you recommend? I am debating to get one of these three? I play alot of classic rock, AC/DC, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Beatles, Stones, 38 Special, Greenday, to name a few. I am looking for as many amp modelers and I can...thank you. Can anyone help?
@Tone-Quest7 жыл бұрын
Hey Angel, I have played a lot of the Zoom pedals but unfortunately I have yet to try the Boss GT-1. I did a little research and looked up the number of amp models per pedal: Zoom G1Xon = 22, Zoom G3X = 22, Zoom G3Xn = 13, Digitech RP360XP = 52, Boss GT-1 = 27, & Boss ME-25 = 10. I like the Zoom pedals personally but the pedal with the most Amp Models is the Digitech RP360XP. So if you like the sound of the Digitech RP360XP, that sounds like a clear winner for you. If it was me, I probably would give a close look at the older Zoom model G3 or G3X, it has 22 Amp models and I really like the sound of the Zoom products. The Zoom G3Xn pedal is newer but only has 13 Amp models. None the less, good luck. Let me know what you get and how you like it. Cheers.

Chris Benton yeah but you can download more amps models un the G3Xn :p
@Tone-Quest7 жыл бұрын
HardRock73 To my knowledge you can’t download more amp models into the G3Xn unless you are talking about doing a firmware update. So you are at the mercy of Zoom to get more amp models....unless you know of a method of downloading amp models which I would be glad to hear more about.

not convinced ....for me, either pc based modeling software or sans amp type pedals get a better sound for recording than those multi effects pedals
@greatvanzini7 жыл бұрын
I think I am with you on this. I have number of modeling type multi pedals. they all do Some thing very well & not so much on others. That said I just got Revalver 4 & it is better all around for recording. AND as I understand it is not even the best one out there. So for me I am using a combination of software & floor modeling, Do love my FlyRig & Soulmate though.

Oh lover my regular old G3 as well.
@Cooker987 жыл бұрын
Using impulse response makes a huge difference and that tech. isn't very affordable yet on hardware format. Cheapest I know is the new cabdriver by digitech and thats almost the price of the zoom g3xn. As for sansamp stuff, we need comparisons but I would expect a similar priced processor beat it at value and sound.
@FingerinUrDaughter5 жыл бұрын
back in the day i was vastly fond of the Komplete Guitar Rig Kontrol system. had fantastic quality effects, and came with its own big ass PC pedalboard with amazingly low latency. hook that shit up to a laptop, hook your laptops headphone jack to a 1/8" male to 1/4" female jack, hook that up to your PA, and bam. you have the most versatile system in the world, pushed out of whatever amp youve got handy. used to do a 1/8th-2RCA plugs cable and just hook it up to the power in on my old surround sound stereo. best fucking 75 watt per channel PA i ever had.
@81giorikas7 жыл бұрын
No offense, but they all sound too similar and not really good either to showcase differences or just not really good at all. I'd want you to just do a demo of the BEST possible sounds of each unit for each amp model and I wouldn't care if you dimed the pressence or used a weird non matched cabinet etc, just to see what each unit can do. Boosting allowed as well.

Thanks for the input. This is just a start, in hopes to show the playing field with default settings. Hoping in the future we will get into some custom patch comparison.

I can hardly listen to the difference of the amp modules in the Zoom while I can listen to the accuracy in the digitech and the difference very clear. unfortunately I used to like Zoom over Digitech, but this is a Win for Digitech. My favourite is Boss GT-1 and it's in the same price range

Too bad that you didn't EQ these properly or have the output adjusted to your interface. Both would have sounded better.

What i hate about Digitech is that their distorsions and overdrives are very killed, harmonics sucks and the chugs sometimes sound crappy, but their other effects are very aceptable, the chorus, delay, reverb, everything for cleans, awesome, but when It comes yo overdriven sounds, i feel a bit upset

Digitech sounds a little plastic to me. Same problem of the Boss GT1. Sounds like Digitech and Boss are functioning at 16bits and the Zoom G3n at 24. The lack of punch in the Digitech's and the Boss GT1's audios are also a thumbs down. They sound great with amplifiers, but will mostly not hold with direct input. G3n yes, have a muddy sound, but it can be rounded, it's still more real than the other ones. I'd record with the Zoom plugged directly into the audio interface, but not with the other two.

Imho both pedals SUCK when it comes to modeling amps. Actually, I haven’t heard a unit yet that can model amps well. Anyone who has played through a real Mesa Boogie for example would bust up laughing at these imitations! However, I like the digitech’s effects a lot better than zoom, especially on clear channels.
@Newnodrogbob6 жыл бұрын
sgperformer yeah, the amp models are capable of producing good sounds, but they aren’t accurate reproductions of the actual amp. If you want to imitate someone’s sound with one of these modelers, you can get really close, but not by copying down their amp settings and putting them in...

@HaraldEngels7 жыл бұрын
Amp simulations suck. The problem I see with the (otherwise great) Digitech is the overprocessed sound sculpting. In a band context you get lost with that. Isolated the Zoom might sounds less appealing but in a dense musical context the G3 appears to me being the better choice if you can't live without amp simulation. I had the Zoom G5n and sold it but kept my Zoom G1on. I will give the Digitech a try because the Lexicon reverb models sound great.
@JosephMile4 жыл бұрын
If you looking for good high-gain then G3n-G5n. The Zoom also has far better cab-sims. No volume problems and no expression pedal issues with Zoom. I've also owned Rp500 and the rack version. As far as I remember I only liked one amp of the many (Digi). Good chorus, delay, mod effects and thats all. If you looking for good Zoom (G5n and so ) demos look up "zoom g5n ozielzinho". Cheers!
