To try and capture CLEAN sound for moto-vlogging I've purchased a second hand (50% new price) ZOOM H1n handy recorder.
The first test wasn’t good as I had no DEAD CAT. I particularly wanted to use it as a helmet microphone for blogging / blogging on the road. The POV of the helmet camera seems to be the best way to go for footage but the microphone doesn’t really work at all and the helmet has techno “issues”.
I have fitted up the RODE Lavalier microphone with TRRS to TRS adapter to the inside of the helmet. I have wired the mic through the bottom of the cheek pad held in place by the cheek pad plastic push in strip which goes in-between the helmet carbon shell and the harder foam insert, which is fixed in place behind the cheek padding. This seems to be working well. There are some finger loops on the back underside of the hard foam padding through which I have looped the cable to stop it being pulled out again while moving around on the bike. For vlogging, the lav cable is connected direct to the mic input feed on the H1n, and the H1n is placed inside the inner breast pocket of my bike jacket. For exhaust note capture, I wanted to use the KRIEGA tail pack. The recording days had EXTREME wind, so there is some wind noise. I think putting the H1n inside the pack with its three layers of material and waterproofing will result in sound which is too muffled. I don’t like to wear backpacks as I was told 25 years ago by my riding instructor, anything you wear can end up being inserted in to your body in the event of a crash !!!
A point to note is the lav microphone only comes with a flimsy foam pad as a pop filter which isn’t effective at all. As I had some spare small dead cats from the RODE Go I purchased second hand I pushed the lav inside one of those and super glued it in place (yes I know its drastic but during the first test ride the dead cat came off and fell to the ground so clearly it does move about if not anchored in place).
The ZOOM universal dead cat for the H1n is massive but works well as it covers so much of the mic.
As for the GoPro’s they both failed on this ride. The Hero 11 has been playing up for some time, shutting down and rebooting. At first I thought it was the media mod with the extreme battery and overheating. So I have been riding without the media mod. Today it shut down constantly, the screen froze and the only solution was to remove the battery each time. The Hero 9 is a lot older and has done a lot more high speed work. When they both went down I considered the SD cards were at fault. Then I wondered about the wind noise riding at 110kph. I had wind reduction turned off, so I turned wind reduction back on, this didn't help either. When I stopped for coffee I did a factory reset on both cameras. This appeared to cure the issue for the Hero 9 and it recorded until the battery ran flat. The Hero 11 appears to be even worse not staying on for even a minute. I purchased this camera in Sept 2023 so I will be returning it. If I can get a refund all the better that will open me up to trying an OSMO instead. I’m reluctant to go for an Insta 360 as apparently they are difficult when it comes to editing (any thoughts and comments ????).
Anyway I consider the test a success although I’m not totally convinced which H1n set up is the best choice!

Please give this video a THUMBS UP, and please subscribe to the channel as it really really helps me stick out to the KZbin algorithm.
CAN YOU HELP?
I’m desperately trying to save up for a new M3 MacBook Pro 14” as my 13” 2012 MacBook is old is now really slow and won’t update with the latest iMovie app. Is I’m using an old MacBook and a really old version of iMovie.
Take care and safe riding and see you in the next one.
