Now that I think about it, I think with a few modidications you could make the lineup make sense by making it Ice Age themed, a bit like Elephant Odyssey. You can add signage about how hippos used to range into Eurasia, can put whatever northern hoofstock into the enclosure and still make sense, and replace the meerkats with an aviary for birds. Not sure how the tazzies would fit in or what to replace them with.

My favorite part of the Toledo Zoo. I really like the mix of animals, it's random but I think it still works. It's refreshing to me. I haven't been to the zoo since February so I still need to come back to meet Kirkja and the takins! The hippos are so friendly and curious, I have so many great pictures and videos of them saying hi right up by the glass. My most brag-worthy zoo moment was at Toledo. Their young orangutan, Fajar, is very interactive and seemed to remember me when I'd visit him after my shifts as a caricature artist. One day close to closing, we were hanging out. He reached through the netting, found a tiny gap between some wood panels, and gave me a twig as a present. He tried to give me one of his toys too, but that wouldn't fit through the netting 😂 I of course still have that twig, it's very special to me.

It's amazing how a zoo can change in five years, and it's exciting to hear that Toledo is going to be the T-Devil capital of the country. Hopefully, some potential joeys will one day make their way down to one of Florida's zoos, preferably Tampa or Miami, in my opinion. This was a great tour to follow along, and seeing the unique collection of animals are found. Speaking of which, nicely done educating about the takins, you did me proud. Can't wait to see the next one, especially given what I saw being teased! See ya then.

Fun fact, we used to have a brother duo of lions a while back. They came from a circus that was going out of business. The only reason why we could keep them in such a small place, the newer Kodiak bear habitat, was because they were so old they didn’t want to move or fight about space and they were also brothers. That’s why we don’t keep them anymore!

My most zoo related brag worthy experience? Well, in 2020, while I was in Colorado during COVID, I visited the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo a few times, and each time I got to feed the elephants during their daily snack feeding. Eventually, the keepers recognized me each time I came, and during one trip in October, one keeper invited me to a training session with one of their elephants, Kimba. It was so incredible, and I think I formed a connection with Kimba, which was so awesome. That became my favorite part of what was otherwise a terrible year for me.

Brag worthy moment at the zoo? Hmm. There were plenty growing up (feeding giraffes, playing with a genet through glass, sitting inches away from a sleeping black bear, and sketching a Nile crocodile from inches away) one of my favorites has to be the time I got the Kookaburras to sing by playing Kookaburra calls on my phone. Needless to say, I scared a couple of kids doing it, but it was worth it!

The dip in the zoo population was due to a massive release in the wild iirc! The reason they’re being brought back is that the tumor virus got a new strain, TFTV-2 that’s hitting even harder. This redoubled the efforts of conservation because of concerns of a wild population collapse or bottleneck. I’d have to say that my favorite local zoo callout (straining the definiton a little) is one of the coolest South American rainforest walkthrough habitats I’ve seen. Very few buildings simulate the treetop-river bottom as well as Amazonia, Forest of Riches
