*Couple of things!* *Map of the Zoo so you can get an idea of where I'm going:* detroitzoo.org/visit/map/ Since I only like to focus on the animal aspects of zoos, if you're a local, comment below what other features the Detroit Zoo offers that weren't included in the video! Turns out, the website doesn't make you click on parking before you can buy a ticket. It's just really buggy and will give you an error message at random times. The Hideout seems to no longer contain sloths, it's fruit bats and rock pythons. Wondering what the first tour will be? This will answer that question: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmjNgHSvq7d9eqssi=lEM-SZto8CV1XCGn

I was thinking of heading up, but if the Arctic tunnel is closed, might do Pittsburgh instead. Thanks for the warning :D
@ZooTours Жыл бұрын
It's was closed for me in 2018 and now 2023, but open in 2019. I asked a local "what gives?" and they said it was open a few days prior to my 2023 visit. Since there have been no major announcements about the tunnel, it could have been a simple maintenance thing.

Long time member and supporter of the Detroit zoo. Thank you for featuring us. You got beautiful footage of the wolves. I’ve been lucky over the years to see them very often. Please note the timed ticket was only during the pandemic. No longer need a timed ticket

Oh I didn’t realize that still. I’ve been going just using my membership, and walking in. During the pandemic even members needed a timed ticket. I see you get a discount when using the calendar scheduling though. That’s good

Great breakdown of one of my home state zoos! I think what you said at 12:24 is the key to why I'm so fond of the Detroit Zoo. You can't really find a single exhibit that's isn't adequate for its residents. Although as you noted some are almost too good, to the point you never see the animals, like the Aardvark. I'm also pretty sure I've seen the wolves on all of my visits, so I wouldn't consider them a likely no show from my own personal experiences. I did, however, go years without seeing a Polar Bear, until my luck improved more recently. A shame you didn't see the Wolverines, they're my personal favorites at Detroit.

Yes I believe you're correct that Detroit currently has the largest singular Great Ape habitat. That is until 2025 when San Antonio Zoo opens their Gorilla habitat that is claimed to be over 2 acres just for 1 troop of gorillas.

As a frequent visitor to this zoo, I'd agree with everything you said. I've never seen the beavers in at least 5 visits that I've looked for them, but I have seen the wolves each time I've been there.

The Penguin exhibit is the most impressive zoo exhibit I’ve ever seen and I can’t imagine it will be topped. My only complaint is how so many of the animals are in back relative to the entrance.

I’ve seen the beavers all of one time in the 10+ visits I’ve made since their debut, and it was after dark during the holiday lights show.

Happy to discover this channel. I love going to zoos and aquariums. It's fantastic to see many different creatures around the world. Not only that, but I do like zoo building games in which I could make my own zoos in them. It's really fun to play. Even if if takes hours to do. Keep up the amazing work on your virtual zoo tours!

Went last week and it was 95 degrees so yes it can get VERY hot in Michigan and Detroit Zoo is natorious for lack of shade so if you're going in May-Early September pack and dress accordingly. We also get alot of Summer Storms so rain gear is paramount

Ooh! Did not expect you to do a review of my local zoo! Honestly, with all the reviews of the other zoos, I thought my zoo was crappy in comparison. But you did an amazing job at spotlighting Detroit. I feel proud of our little place now. Also, yes... we have never seen those beavers. At this point I'm convinced beavers are just a myth XD.

Remember going when I was little. Arctic Circle had opened up not too long before, and I was excited to see the 8 polar bears they advertised. Only saw 1 and left very disappointed. Still though, it looks worth it to give it another shot now that I'm older.

Detroit Zoo had an aquarium! Wow-wee! Say, try to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium someday? And here are my 2 recent zoo trivia questions for you & your girlfriend, Zak.... 1) What year did the San Francisco Zoo once house giant pandas? 2) Besides the sika deer & muntjac deer, what other deer species did the Oakland Zoo have before the California Trail attraction is built?

The Aquarium is on Belle Isle, it is NOT on grounds in Royal Oak on the Detroit Zoo campus/site. You have to head into Detroit proper for Belle Isle.

The Detroit Zoo belongs to the City of Detroit. Due to the loss of homes and populations, the residential taxes have dwindled, causing the zoo to be underfunded. Hopefully some local wealthy benefactor will step forward and gift some funds for a revival. Let's plan to revive the Detroit Zoo! The Metro Detroit area wants our zoo back!❤❤❤😂🎉🎉🎉!
@TakenTook4 ай бұрын
The Detroit Zoo is actually located in the city of Royal Oak. The property taxes that support the zoo come from cities in Wayne County (including Detroit) Oakland County (including Royal Oak) and nearby Macomb county. Basically the entire Tri-County area in Southeast Michigan contributes to the funding. Loss of jobs and population from the entire area, including the city of Detroit proper, does hurt the overall tax base, though. So the zoo also welcomes private donations

I’ve never seen the wolves either :(

Interesting about the wolves - I've seen them every single time I've been since they added them, so maybe like 5 or 6 times total? No one ever sees the wolverine though. The aardvarks are so cool when they're out (its about a 50/50 shot based on my experience). But - most importantly - as someone who studies animal welfare, the detroit zoo is the best zoo that I've seen by FAR. I am 100% willing to sacrifice seeing every animal every time when that means that those animals are being given natural, spacious habitats that minimize stress and allow natural behaviors. In contrast to you, I also really like the moats. It gives the animals their privacy and allows for a more natural feel than fences would. In contrast, any exhibit where you can see the animal no matter where it is (looking at you, Toledo) is truly awful.

It is in a suburb of Detroit, so yes, it is in the greater Deteroit area. Much like how Cincinnati Zoo is in Avondale, Columbus is in Powell, and San Diego SP is in Escondido. All neighborhoods, suburbs, villages, or townships of their Metropolitan cities.
@kevinmiller4457 Жыл бұрын
Out of all the aza zoos I’d say Detroit is up there for biggest decline. Bush dogs,black bears,hippos,painted dogs,seals, and elk plus many others are species they have lost In the last decade. And I don’t think the moated style habitats will age well and be considered outdated in a decade or so.
@JaredNGF2003 Жыл бұрын
Other zoos have bad the biggest decline too: Bronx (Elephants Hippos Polar bears Chimpanzees proboscis monkeys wildebeest etc) Brookfield ((good thing they got a new Ceo but still) giant pandas some farm animals baboons Hippos Walruses Flying hornbills warthog Forest buffalos Elephants Chimpanzees Mandrills etc) Cincinnati( mainly Hoofstock polar bears Sumatran rhinos camels sea lions) Cleveland metroparks(hippos polar bears mandrills tapirs) Milwaukee(rhinoceros proboscis monkeys river dolphin warthog mandrills gelada etc) Minnesota (wild boar and musk ox) Philadelphia(EVERYTHING including Elephants Aardvarks Shanked doucs All Crocodilians polar bears Barbary sheep camels etc) San Diego zoo(giant pandas rhinos sea lions Hoofstock like sable antelope mountain goats moose giant elands bison etc hyenas ostriches okapis)
