There is no canon second in command in the strawhats, zoro fights the right hands because he's the 2nd strongest in the group, while sanji often takes responsibility over the crew when luffy isnt present. Ppl often downplay sanji because they tie his worth to fight scenes and not his character moments(also his pervert gag doesn't help him gain respect either.) if i had to choose i like sanji more just because hes allowed to be a character with flaws and not a cardboard cutout with gud fights like zoro, but zoros smoking sanji in a fight no question. Fighting is zoros only character trait, he aint losing lol.

Its actually really simple...Oda made it clear. Zoro is better...more driven and stronger. Has Conq Haki and overall better Arnament. Sanji has only superior Observation. Sure Sanji is faster, but Zoro is more durable and physically strong. Sure Sanji would actually be a solid fight for Zoro but in the end...Sanji is facing a losing fight with odds stacked against him. All and all Zoro is overall better rounded and stronger. Sanji is always gonna be the best second man of the crew. Surpassing Jimbei. But first and most iconic vice captain in the entire series goes to Zoro. Only exception Rayleigh...Goated Vice Captain of Gol D Roger.
