I love zorro’s character development here. He told luffy that if luffy’s ambitions got in the way of his own he’d have luffy pay with his life. But in this fight, in the flashback, and with his final speech we become aware that zorro is no longer just fighting for himself because his dream aligns with luffy’s dream now. If luffy is to become king of the pirates then luffy will need the world strongest swordsman in his crew-which is why he promised he’d never lose to another swordsman again.

It show what it really takes to fight in the Grand Line, it's not the gimmicks or amount of men and ships that makes you conquer it but something more...2. this fight was shown this early to show us, the viewers, the gap between current straw hats and one of the top strongest. up to this point every fight they've been in was fairly easy and this gave us a taste of how far they still needed to go. this was also the start of zoro's ambitions growing from more than being the greatest swordsman to helping luffy become pirate king.

To answer your question about Luffy and blades, a sword will cut him. Blunt objects like clubs, bullets and cannons can be bounced off him though.

Zoro vs Mihawk is such an amazing moment in the series, and the frog line might be one of my favorites. The show didn't translate it very well though, it goes more like this: As Mihawk prepares to fight the strongest swordsman in east blue with a cheese knife, he says "Little frog sitting in your well, it's time you learn the world is far bigger than what you can see from your well." It's just such an incredible line. The next time it's mentioned is when Zoro uses it himself. Shockingly, nobody seems to recognize the reference though...

Yeah, Zorro is a famous fictional swordsman, a vigilante character and kind of a proto-superhero who also inspired Batman, and yes Mihawk seems like he might be based on Zorro. And I'm not sure if it's true but I've definitely heard people speculate that Zoro is named after Zorro I remember there was a Zorro TV show in the early 90s that I think was pretty popular, or at least I always had the impression that it was, admittedly I was just a little kid back then (I found it really cool lol). But that was around the time Oda was planning One Piece so it wouldn't be a surprise if that show inspired him (assuming it was also shown in Japan) ETA: apparently there was a Zorro anime that ran from 1996 to 1997 which is literally just before One Piece started, and they spelled "Zorro" as "Zoro" (ゾロ) so yeah....

This is one of the most important early episodes. Up until now, our protagonists haven't really been challenged. Yes, there have been some tense moments and injuries, but generally speaking, they've been able to power through with no problem. First time watchers/readers may be thinking, hey, this won't be that hard after all! Dracule Mihawk changes all that. In him, we get a tiny glimpse of just how powerful the people at the top really are, and how far our heroes truly have to go to reach those heights.
