Great story. Beautifully done. Good job Arthur! One of my favorite fighter jet flight videos. As a crewchief working on F-15's in the USAF in the 80's, I had the extremely fortunate opportunity to go back seat during mock combat in an Eglin AFB 33rd TFW 59th AMU F-15B over Germany while on TDY. We pulled 8.1 gs during a dogfight against an F-16. It was freaking incredible. I also had a 900 Ninja I used to ride around the base perimeter road. I would drag against the Eagles and loose regularly.

Some of the training that all fighter pilots (actually, all military pilots) go through is what's called High Altitude Training, or Physiological Training. I did mine 20 years ago at Tyndall AFB, Florida. One of the parts of the training while sitting in the "tub" or Chamber, is to have the oxygen on 100% Emergency. The air is literally forced into your lungs. This is necessary as in high G, you would not be able to pull enough air in. I can tell you from the training, just sitting there with the air forced in, and trying to state my name, birthday, hometown... I got barely the first letter out of my first name. I have been up to 7Gs in the backseat, but hearing the guys in the front just chill while up to 8 or 9 Gs is always funny to hear.... Just another day in the office for them.

My dad (USAF Col. Ret) was a test pilot for years at Edwards AFB, where the sonic booms rang out loud and proud all day long.. I never heard mention of the Hicks maneuver that they use to keep from passing out. I'll have to ask him more about that and other flying-related material during our next time! Pretty scary stuff. Awesome film!

Anyone ever set up next to an airport runway, even with a commercial jet, presumably loaded, and thought it might be a race? I did once, when I was young and dumb. OKC, around 1989. B737 versus Ford Bronco 2. When the football was cleared for T/O, I gassed my ford all the way and within a few seconds I had my ass promptly handed to me by the Boeing. By the time I reached 60 the lumbering passenger jet had more than twice the forward progress I had. It wouldn't have mattered what I was driving. That moment taught me that these are different creatures. Any comparisons were just for fun. So I knew before watching this video who won. Just watched it anyway for the entertainment. Now I drive 105,500 pound trucks and am one of your local truckers who mash 5 or 6 gears before I even get through an intersection from a standing start. Always wanted to be a pilot. My dad sat me in a T38 when I was younger than 5. Always had the bug, but life doesn't always give you what you want. And by the way, if you think this F/A 18 accelerates fast off an airport runway, you might want to see it launch off a carrier. 0-140 in 2.5 seconds. Munch on that.

Yeah I am young, but the chances of that happening nowadays are slim because the military is basically replacing human pilots in jets with drones :( which sucks cause I'd love to be a pilot, but if I can go to one of thse events I would love to just take a flight with these guys :)

Alex Lightner Flying in a fighter jet is pretty unlikely unless you join the military or are ultra-successful, but civilian aviation is very reachable for most Americans. You can get yourself a decent single engine plane for $25k-$50k. Gas in a plane like that is $35-$50/hour vs. $10k/hour for a Blue Angel. I have not flown in a fighter jet yet, but I can tell you that flying in a small plane is pretty great nonetheless. It's a whole lot better than driving even a ZR1 - I'm not much of a car person (I learned to fly before I even set foot in the driver's seat of a car), but for most pilots driving always pales in comparison to flying.
